We usually take the subway with our subway cards or by using QR codes (二维码) on our smartphones. But the development of science and technology makes a difference to people’s lives. The subway line, Beijing Daxing Airport Express, became the first in China to use the technology of scanning the palms (扫描手掌) in May, 2023.
To enjoy the service, people need to record their palms on machines in subway stations. Then, they have to turn on the palm-scanning function (功能) on their smartphones. After they finish this, they are allowed to go through the ticket gates without subway cards or smartphones. If they finish their rides, their smartphones will pay the money.
Many people welcome the new technology. They think it helps them to travel faster and more easily. They needn’t take out their subway cards or smartphones in rush hours. What’s more, the palm-scanning technology is very friendly to people who sometimes forget to bring their subway cards. If your phone is dead, your palms can get you into the subway station. Besides Beijing, some other cities like Shenzhen also put the new technology into service in subway stations.

Kung fu is a kind of traditional art in China. You must have seen it in many Chinese movies or TV plays. Do you want to learn it? In Dengfeng, Henan Province, there are more than 50,000 students learning kung fu today. They come to learn it for different reasons. Some practice kung fu mainly for body-building or self-protection. Others come to learn skills that will help them get good jobs more easily in the future. Also, some parents send their kids to learn kung fu and hope they can develop self-control and the spirit of hard work.
“Attracting (吸引) new students has become a problem.” says Hu Zhengsheng, who teaches kung fu at a small school in Dengfeng. Hu worries that this art will soon disappear. “It’s hard to make kids agree to spend many years here, because the life of kung fu learners is not easy or interesting.” he says.
Hu’s students have to sleep in cold rooms in winter and train hard outside no matter what the weather is like. To learn kung fu well, they must have a strong will (意志力) and go through many difficulties.
In order to make old traditions live on, the young must learn and pass them down. To attract new students, Hu changes his kung fu lessons to make them lively and fun. Hopefully, more and more students will show interest in learning kung fu.
Now many students are learning kung fu in Dengfeng, Henan Province. Some want to exercise and protect themselves while others think it can help them find good jobs more |

What kind of people are you? Are you outgoing or shy? And some people think they have social phobia (社恐).
Are you just shy or do you have social phobia?
For those who have social phobia, everyday social situations cause strong fear. They feel uncomfortable with their body and mind. For example, their face turns red, and they have an upset stomach or have trouble catching their breath. But if you only feel a little uncomfortable, that might mean you’re just shy.
If you don’t have social phobia, why do you avoid socializing?
Many shy people keep away from socializing because they care too much about what other people think. They are afraid of getting bad words from others. They simply shut themselves down so that no one else will have the chance to know them. In fact, socializing not only brings you more friends. It can also help you get direct but honest advice.
If you avoid socializing, what will happen?
Mike is a student from Grade 9. He has socializing problems when meeting his teachers. He shares one of his experiences.
