We usually take the subway with our subway cards or by using QR codes (二维码) on our smartphones. But the development of science and technology makes a difference to people’s lives. The subway line, Beijing Daxing Airport Express, became the first in China to use the technology of scanning the palms (扫描手掌) in May, 2023.

To enjoy the service, people need to record their palms on machines in subway stations. Then, they have to turn on the palm-scanning function (功能) on their smartphones. After they finish this, they are allowed to go through the ticket gates without subway cards or smartphones. If they finish their rides, their smartphones will pay the money.

Many people welcome the new technology. They think it helps them to travel faster and more easily. They needn’t take out their subway cards or smartphones in rush hours. What’s more, the palm-scanning technology is very friendly to people who sometimes forget to bring their subway cards. If your phone is dead, your palms can get you into the subway station. Besides Beijing, some other cities like Shenzhen also put the new technology into service in subway stations.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了近年来人工智能开始创造自己的艺术,但人工智能并没有取代艺术家,反而给艺术家带来了更多的可能性。人们认为人工智能可以成为一种给艺术世界带来变革的有用工具。

【推荐1】Art, to many people, is a human expression of creativity. But in recent years, you may have read news about AI creating its own art, such as paintings or writing poems. Some people worry that AI might someday replace (取代) artists. But this worry seems to be unnecessary, at least for now. Many artists today are turning AI into a useful tool. Instead of replacing artists, AI is bringing artists more possibilities.

A piece of music created by AI has recently attracted attention. AI was used to turn a virus (病毒) into a piece of nearly two-hour long music. The project was led by a scientist and he tried a special note (音符) in each amino acid (氨基酸) of the virus. The AI then translated these notes into music.

Listeners found the project unbelievable. “It allows me to see the virus in a new way.” said one listener. This surprising marriage between science and art could not be achieved without AI. As a scientist wrote, “AI helps artists play around in creative ways, making things possible beyond what they have ever thought before.”

AI can also take care of repetitive tasks for artists. For example, in the comic and animation (动画) industries, artists don’t need to color in black-and-white line drawings over and over again because now AI tools can help with such work. It could give artists room to try more creative activities by cutting down the time it takes.

As Peter Ward wrote for The Culture Trip, art of every kind has always been influenced by technology. AI can become a useful tool to bring changes to the art world if it’s welcomed but not feared.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中国在太空种植植物方面取得的进展,以及在太空中种植的意义、面临的困难等。

【推荐2】How do plants grow in space? An experiment (实验) on the Tiangong space station can provide the answer. Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice in space. This makes it possible for astronauts to grow food to support long-term space stays.

“The rice plants are growing very well,” Zheng Huiqiong, a scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. Since the rice experiment began on July 29, the plants of the tall shoot rice have reached a height of about 30 cm. They’re much taller than the box, which is about 14 cm. Plus, the plants of the dwarf rice (短杆水稻) have grown to around 5 cm.

Although there have been other rice experiments in space, the one on Tiangong is different. For the first time in history, the experiment aims to produce the whole life cycle (周期) of the rice. It begins with a seed (种子) and ends with new seeds produced.

The astronauts will keep watching the plants. If the experiment is successful, they will collect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for further studies, Zheng added.

Since the 1980s, China has been taking the seeds of crops to space. But growing rice in space is a different challenge because of the bad conditions of space. Micro-gravity, no enough air and high-energy space rays may make the plants difficult to grow.

Rice has been a main food for astronauts for a long time. US astronauts on the Apollo 11-the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969-ate cold dried chicken and rice during their trip to space.

If such an experiment goes well, astronauts will be able to plant their food in space. They don’t need to take a large number of food with them for their space travels.

1. How tall can the plants of the tall shoot rice reach in Tiangong experiment?
A.5 cm.B.14 cm.C.30 cm.D.50 cm.
2. What is special about the rice experiment on Tiangong?
A.It’s the first time to plant rice in space.
B.We may get new seeds at the end of it.
C.It can change the bad conditions in space.
D.It can provide enough food for space trips.
3. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The astronauts.B.The rice plants.C.The rice seeds.D.The studies.
4. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Taking astronauts to Tiangong.B.Landing on the moon.
C.Offering astronauts new food.D.Planting for space success.
