Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table? A new study suggests that by sharing “people food”, you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy.
Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki say this diet is not enough with variety (多样化) and good for our pet dogs, either.
The scientists discovered that the foods a dog might find such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. Having different kinds of foods leads to many kind of microbes (微生物). There are millions of them in human and animal bodies. Some are detrimental to us, but many are good for us, and they play important roles in helping us digest (消化) food.
A total of 8,500 young pet dogs took part in the study. 4,500 of them were under 6 months old, and the rest were between 6 and 18 months old. The owners were asked about what food they had fed their pets and how often. When the dogs grew older, about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms (慢性肠胃不适症状). However, if dogs had had a mixed diet while young, it was 22%less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life.
Dr. Anna told The Times of London, “Dog foods on sale are considered to provide a complete diet... But nobody would give 12 years of the same food to a child—why should a dog be different?”
26. What should dog owners do according to the new study?A.They must offer dry food to their dogs. |
B.They can share “people food” with dogs. |
C.They had better buy more processed food. |
D.They shouldn’t make food for dogs. |

Volunteering is when you work for free to help other people or animals. It can be a few hours a week, or a few months full-time. Many students volunteer in the summer holidays. In September, 2023, a group of scientists studied 1,000 students who volunteered for four weeks. The results were very positive.
Happier
After the four weeks, the students said they were happier than before. About 80% of them said they felt more energetic and less stressed. They told their parents they wanted to continue to volunteer.
More Friends
The students made new friends and improved their communicating skills while they were volunteering. Sixty-five percent of the students said they met some great people. Fifty percent said they would stay in touch with their new friends.
Less Pressure and More Helpful
The students’ parents were happy with the results too, because they felt their children were easier to live with. One parent said, “My girl Lily didn’t spend all her time on her phone after the voluntary work. She started to help around the house.” Another parent said, “Tom wasn’t worried about his exams anymore. I think he’s going to do better because of that.”
More studies show us the benefits of volunteering. A study by United Health Group, in January, 2024 found that people who volunteered for more than 200 hours in a year had fewer health problems like heart disease and high blood pressure. Maybe we’ll all be volunteering when we’re 100 years old!

48. How many students would stay in touch with their new friends?
49. Why were the parents happy with the results?
