Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table? A new study suggests that by sharing “people food”, you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy.
Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki say this diet is not enough with variety (多样化) and good for our pet dogs, either.
The scientists discovered that the foods a dog might find such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. Having different kinds of foods leads to many kind of microbes (微生物). There are millions of them in human and animal bodies. Some are detrimental to us, but many are good for us, and they play important roles in helping us digest (消化) food.
A total of 8,500 young pet dogs took part in the study. 4,500 of them were under 6 months old, and the rest were between 6 and 18 months old. The owners were asked about what food they had fed their pets and how often. When the dogs grew older, about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms (慢性肠胃不适症状). However, if dogs had had a mixed diet while young, it was 22%less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life.
Dr. Anna told The Times of London, “Dog foods on sale are considered to provide a complete diet... But nobody would give 12 years of the same food to a child—why should a dog be different?”

But bad eating habits go beyond (超出) fast food. Many teenagers find it difficult to eat healthily. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. My father invited my sister and me to go fishing with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go. I'm so glad about what I did.
Being on the boat, we found there was something meters away. When moving nearer, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn't believe it-there aren't any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them there, where the sea water was so dirty that nothing could live in it.
The little baby whale was stuck(卡住) and could not move. The mother went down into the water and came up suddenly, making big waves. "She's trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side," my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the baby whales turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They made great efforts to swim towards the deep sea but failed and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them to the sea. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water from the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and then they swam into the deep sea.
In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.

She wanted to teach Chantek like teaching a human child. She and some other scientists taught him sign language (手语). Chantek learned at least 150 words in American sign language. They also taught him other human skills like using a bathroom and cleaning his room.
Chantek stayed at the university for 8 years. He sometimes even walked to classes with students. But in 1986, Chantek ran away from his place and scared a student. The student cried in fear and said that Chantek wanted to hurt her. So people had to send him to an animal center. He spent 11 years there, living in a cage and becoming fat and unhappy.
In 1997, Chantek moved into Zoo Atlanta. There, he could finally go outside and jump from tree to tree. The zoo said Chantek often used sign language to “talk” with his caretakers (看护员). But he was too shy to do it with visitors.
Lyn Miles often visited Chantek in the zoo. She said that Chantek still saw himself as half human, and he called the other orangutans in the zoo “orange dogs”.

A total of 76.2 percent of parents said their children were getting the recommended sleep time of 10 hours a night for primary school students and 9 hours for those in secondary school. Last year’s survey found only about 40 percent of students got enough sleep.
In April, the ministry advised that primary school students should go to bed before 9:20 pm, middle school students before10 pm and high school students before 11 pm. Schools should control the amount of homework given to students to make sure primary school students can finish all their written homework at school and secondary school students can finish most of their homework on campus.
Zhang Xiu, mother of a middle school student in Beijing, said her daughter can sleep for more than nine hours a night, as the school has reduced the amount of her homework. Her daughter can finish her homework before 8 pm and usually goes to bed before 9:30 pm.
According to Luo Lin, vice-principal of Fengtai Experimental School, some students go to bed late not because they have heavy academic workload, but because they are following the examples of their parents who stay up late and spend a lot of time on their smartphones. Chinese first artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) textbook for high school students has recently come out in Shanghai to start AI lessons. Forty high schools around the country have become experimental bases (实验基地) for having AI education.
The book is mainly about the history of AI and how AI can be used in areas such as facial recognition (人脸识别), public security (公共安全) and auto driving.
Peng Yu is a teacher at the High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He took part in making the textbook and said it would give guide to students. He said, “The book has a good introduction (介绍) to the area so that students can decide if they want to further study AI at college. Students can also find out what they need to learn if they are interested in studying AI. For example, they have to learn math really hard because it is the start of AI.”
Peng said AI has improved the interest of many high school students already, but he still feels that they can learn much more by taking part in project-based learning programs. Peng is sure that everyone should learn something about AI because it will be part of our everyday lives.
