Ken and Anthony were childhood friends. They went to primary and high school together. They went to college in different states, and then they lost touch. That was twenty years ago.
One morning Ken was reading the newspaper with his morning coffee. Inside he saw a notice for a poetry reading at a nearby bookstore. He was surprised to find that the poet (诗人) was none other than his friend Anthony. Ken decided to see what his friend was like.
Ken sat in the last row of the area set up inside the bookstore. When Anthony was introduced and came up the podium (讲台), Ken hardly recognized (认出) him. Anthony was almost completely bald (秃顶的) and had a little potbelly (大肚皮). When Anthony was in high school, he was very handsome. What Anthony had lost in looks was made up for in talent. Anthony’s poetry was quite good.
Anthony recognized Ken sitting in the back row. When the reading was over, Ken stood in line with the others waiting for Anthony to sign a copy of his book. When it was Ken’s turn, Anthony stood up and hugged his long-lost friend. Anthony invited Ken to stay until he had finished signing books. Ken did, and the two men drank a cup of coffee at a nearby cafe.

It's all about personal space, which means not only an imaginary space around the body, but also the space around all the senses. People feel that their space is being violated (侵犯) when they meet with an unwelcome sound, smell or look. This is probably why a man on a crowded bus shouting into his mobile phone or a woman next to you putting on strong perfume(香水)makes you feel angry.
Whether people have had a stronger wish to protect their personal space in recent times is hard to say. Yet studies of airlines show that people have a strong desire to have space to themselves. In a survey by Trip Advisor, a travel website, people said that if they had to pay morefor some extra service, they would rather have larger seats than extra food.
Although people may need their personal space, some hardly realize it. For example, people on a bus who hold newspapers in front of their faces to read in fact keep a distance from strangers.
Go and watch a library table. You will notice that one of the corner seats will usually be taken first, because they are the farthest way. What if someone sits opposite to you? Maybe you will pile up books as if to make a wall..
Preference for personal space is different from culture to culture. Scientists have found that Americans generally prefer more personal space than people from other cultures. In Latin cultures, however, people are more comfortable standing close to each other.

B.explains why people need personal space. |

The camel is one of the strangest and oldest animals living today. Scientists believe that millions of years ago, ancestors of camels lived in North America. There was a bridge of land over the Bering Strait that led to Asia. One group of the animals moved to Asia. These animals developed into camels of today. Another group went to South America. This group developed into the llama, an animal in the same family as the camel.
There are two types of camels, the dromedary and Bactrian. The dromedary has one hump and is found mostly in Arabian countries. The Bactrian camel has two humps and is found in Asian countries. All dromedary camels today is domesticated(驯养). Bactrian camels can still be found in the wild in areas of Mongolia and China. The Bactrian camel is shorter and heavier than the dromedary. Also, the pads on its feet are thicker so that it can walk in colder, rockier places than the dromedary.
The camel has many interesting characteristics. For example, unlike most animals, it lifts both feet on one side at the same time when it runs. This causes it to rock from side to side when it runs. Another unusual characteristic is the camel’s ability to eat almost everything if it becomes hungry enough. It might even eat part of a tent or a basket if it cannot find the grass it prefers.
Camels are the best pack animals in the world. They can carry things as heavy as 600 pounds 25 miles a day. They can also go without water for as long as two weeks in the winter.
You might think that a camel stores some food and water in its hump or humps. This is what human beings thought for many years, but it is not true. A camel’s hump is made up of fat and muscle. If a camel has to go without food for several days, it can use the fat in its hump for energy. The camel keeps water in its tissues and cells(组织细胞). Its body does not use the water to cool off the way the human body does. That is why a camel’s body temperature can change, by as much as 11℃.
