A blog: How not to spend money
SarahMills

5th June 2022
Wow! Problem. Not a lot of money right now and I don’t want to spend it. I’m tired of spending money! So here I am at home and I’m thinking—what can I do to save money?

goodgirl

I always go into town all the weekend—and I usually spend money! It’s very easy to buy things if you go into a street full of shops. So this weekend I’m staying at home. Right now I’m just reading a book—my parents can’t believe it!

It’s funny, MarkJ—I’m just like you (going to the cinema, I mean). Right now, I’m not watching a film—I’m watching the stars at home! I’ve got a book about the sky and it’s fantastic. I’m having a really good time here!

MarkJ

I really like going to the cinema but it can be a bit expensive—especially because my friends and I often go for a pizza after the film. So tonight I’m watching a film on TV at home. I’m really enjoying it. And it costs nothing!

It's all about personal space, which means not only an imaginary space around the body, but also the space around all the senses. People feel that their space is being violated (侵犯) when they meet with an unwelcome sound, smell or look. This is probably why a man on a crowded bus shouting into his mobile phone or a woman next to you putting on strong perfume(香水)makes you feel angry.

Whether people have had a stronger wish to protect their personal space in recent times is hard to say. Yet studies of airlines show that people have a strong desire to have space to themselves. In a survey by Trip Advisor, a travel website, people said that if they had to pay morefor some extra service, they would rather have larger seats than extra food.

Although people may need their personal space, some hardly realize it. For example, people on a bus who hold newspapers in front of their faces to read in fact keep a distance from strangers.

Go and watch a library table. You will notice that one of the corner seats will usually be taken first, because they are the farthest way. What if someone sits opposite to you? Maybe you will pile up books as if to make a wall..

Preference for personal space is different from culture to culture. Scientists have found that Americans generally prefer more personal space than people from other cultures. In Latin cultures, however, people are more comfortable standing close to each other.

8. What can we know from the survey by Trip Advisor?
A.Food service is better provided than seats on the plane.
B.People have a strong desire for personal space in recent times.
C.There are not enough seats on the plane to meet people’s needs.
D.People need a smaller personal space in recent times than before.
9. Who might feel his(her) personal space is safe according to the passages?
A.A person who hears strange noises when reading at home.
B.A person who has been watched by a stranger for a long time.
C.A Latin boy who is chatting with a friend sitting close to him.
D.A person who has to sit next to a lady putting on strong perfume.
10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Different cultures don’t share the same preferences for personal space.
B.People usually choose the front seats first in a library for personal space.
C.If you hold newspaper on the bus, your personal space won’t be violated.
D.The space around the body is more needed than that around all the senses.
11. The writer mainly            in this passage.
A.tells us how to achieve personal space.
B.explains why people need personal space.
C.introduces some knowledge about personal space.
D.argues for the importance of keeping personal space.

The camel is one of the strangest and oldest animals living today. Scientists believe that millions of years ago, ancestors of camels lived in North America. There was a bridge of land over the Bering Strait that led to Asia. One group of the animals moved to Asia. These animals developed into camels of today. Another group went to South America. This group developed into the llama, an animal in the same family as the camel.

There are two types of camels, the dromedary and Bactrian. The dromedary has one hump and is found mostly in Arabian countries. The Bactrian camel has two humps and is found in Asian countries. All dromedary camels today is domesticated(驯养). Bactrian camels can still be found in the wild in areas of Mongolia and China. The Bactrian camel is shorter and heavier than the dromedary. Also, the pads on its feet are thicker so that it can walk in colder, rockier places than the dromedary.

The camel has many interesting characteristics. For example, unlike most animals, it lifts both feet on one side at the same time when it runs. This causes it to rock from side to side when it runs. Another unusual characteristic is the camel’s ability to eat almost everything if it becomes hungry enough. It might even eat part of a tent or a basket if it cannot find the grass it prefers.

Camels are the best pack animals in the world. They can carry things as heavy as 600 pounds 25 miles a day. They can also go without water for as long as two weeks in the winter.

You might think that a camel stores some food and water in its hump or humps. This is what human beings thought for many years, but it is not true. A camel’s hump is made up of fat and muscle. If a camel has to go without food for several days, it can use the fat in its hump for energy. The camel keeps water in its tissues and cells(组织细胞). Its body does not use the water to cool off the way the human body does. That is why a camel’s body temperature can change, by as much as 11℃.

12. The dromedary and Bactrian camels have a lot of differences EXCEPT ____.
A.the places they live inB.the things they eat
C.the number of humpsD.the appearance they look
13. Why does a camel rock from side to side when it runs?
A.Because it lifts both feet on one side at the same time.
B.Because it carries many heavy things every day.
C.Because it has too many things stored in his humps.
D.Because its pads on its feet are very thick and short.
14. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 5 refers to ____.
A.a camel stores some food and water in its humps
B.a camel’s hump is made of fat and muscle
C.a camel can use the fat in its hump for energy
D.a camel doesn’t use the water to cool off its body
15. The purpose of this passage is mainly to ____.
A.talk about the importance of camels
B.advise people to come and play with camels
C.tell some facts about camels to people
D.teach people how to raise camels at home

Your parents might not realize how important their health is to you. Now it’s your chance to let them know!

16     Before you talk with your parents, it helps to get clear on what you want them to do. Do you want a parent to eat better? Get more exercise? Get more sleep? If you want a parent to lose weight, you’d better find out the disadvantage of being heavy and how great they will feel after eating healthy food or exercising more.

17     Pick a moment when everyone’s relaxed and there’s time to talk. Say something like: “Dad, I care about your health and I worry you’re so busy that you don’t have time for exercise.” Let parents know you are willing to make the change yourself. For example, say you’d be willing to walk together after dinner.

18     Has your mom or dad agreed to your ideas? Well done! Let’s say the change your mom or dad agreed to is eating healthier food. Work together to plan what they and you will do. Examples are: I’ll eat five fruits every day. I’ll eat breakfast every morning.

19     It’s normal if your parents fail at first. If parents want to give up, encourage them to keep going. If you’re making a change together, you can say, “Well, I’m sorry. Let’s start fresh and go on with our plan tomorrow.” Offer your praise! Let your parents know you love and care about them for what they’re doing and that it means a lot to you.

20     If parents don’t follow you ideas, ask them gently, “Could you at least think about it for me?” Then give them a little time to consider. How many times have you pushed back on something they asked you to do, but then later thought more about it?

Soon you’ll be grown and out of the house. Here’s your chance to set your parents on the right way.

A.What if a parent says “No”?
B.Show your encouragement and understanding.
C.Tell parents your feelings and thoughts.
D.Think about it before starting.
E.Come up with a plan together.
F.Talk to parents the same way you’d like them to talk to you.
