The ancient Chinese discovered the secret of silk thousands of years ago. Silk was so beautiful and valuable that it only remained China’s secret.
________ China’s neighbors soon found it out when Chinese leaders sent gifts of silk to leaders of other lands during the Warring States period. Little by little, the word spread out 2000 years ago—In the Han Dynasty (朝代), people of the Roman Empire (present-day Italy and nearby areas) knew about silk, which made silk grew wildly popular in the West just one night. In the Tang and Northern Song Dynasty, traders built lots of trade routes (贸易路线) between Europe and China, carrying many other products, like china, cloth and so on. However, during this period, the routes didn’t get an official name.
A German traveler named the trade routes “The Silk Road” in the mid-1800s, making them more popular in the world. In the Song Dynasty, different main routes developed between China and Europe. Traders could choose among routes that crossed Eastern Europe and the Far East. In the Ming Dynasty, there were sea routes, too. Ships could start the journey from China to other countries. The Silk Road played an important role in bringing different cultures and peoples together. To make successful deals, businessmen had to learn the languages and practice of the countries they traveled. As they journeyed along the Silk Road, people shared knowledge about arts, science, technologies and so on. Over hundreds of years, different cultures influenced each other.
Today, a new “Silk Road”—“Belt and Road” has built relationships between different countries. The modern transportation (交通运输) will allow travel from the furthest points, like Shanghai to London in a couple of days or even hours. Just like the ancient one, it builds relationships between the east and the west, the past and the future. Different countries will have more chances to not only make business but also exchange ideas. Let’s see the great story of the new “Silk Road”.

“The winter has come again.” Buck, a great golden-brown dog, thought to himself as the first piece snow touched his nose. But the cold of the winter wasn’t his biggest worry. The breath of a group of wolves was hidden in the wind blowing from the forest. “The wolves have come with winter.” Buck stood silently, waiting for them.
Suddenly, a wolf appeared and jumped at Buck. In a second, Buck broke his neck, and then stood still again. The wolf was dead behind him. Three more wolves jumped at him and were also killed. Then the group attacked Buck together. Yet not one of them could bring Buck down: he was too quick, too strong, too clever for them all. After half an hour, the group stopped.
Another hour passed. Finally, one wolf moved forward to Buck in a submissive way. The wolf walked near slowly with his head down. They touched noses. Then another wolf came forward to do the same, and another, and another. Soon the group was all around Buck, howling (嚎叫) into the sky. The call of the wild was loud in Buck’s ears. And when the wolves returned to the forest, Buck ran with them, side by side.
After a few years, the local villagers began to notice that some of the little wolves had golden brown hairs in their gray coats. They also saw a golden-brown animal that stood in front of the group of wolves. They called it the “Ghost (幽灵) Wolf”.
“And I once saw dead horses and deer killed by the teeth of a terrible animal. It was the Ghost Wolf!” Shouted one villager.
“I saw it too, in a valley which we dare not enter. What kind of animal would be brave enough to do so?” said another.
The Ghost Wolf was Buck. Though he was still in a golden-brown coat, he became like all other wolves. He would walk around the lake where the yellow gold shone in the water and howled. And he was not always alone. In the long nights, he ran in the front of the wolf group through the moonlight, and then disappeared in the darkness.

①Most junior high school students pay much attention to P.E. classes and everyday exercise mainly because they will be tested. However, after they get into senior high school, will they still keep the habit of doing sports? Sadly, the answer is no.
②According to a recent survey, only less than 20 percent of senior high school students do sports daily. About 30 percent keep exercising 3 to 5 times a week. 20 percent only exercise once or twice a week. The rest do sports less than once a week.
③When asked why they choose to exercise less often, many high school students share the same reason. Students’ sports ability won’t be tested in the National College Entrance Exam (高考), so they won’t feel the push to exercise every day. What’s more, other activities take up the time for sports, such as cellphone games and doing homework. This means many teens don’t get their necessary exercise.
④Lack of exercise has already caused problems in students’ health. More than 40 percent of senior high school students have myopia (近视). Over one third of the students are over-weighted. And about 80 percent of the students feel stressed out after a long day of study without proper exercise to relax.
⑤It’s time for everyone to take actions to make this situation better. Our schools can have more time for sports. Not just P.E. classes, sports meetings and some ball games will encourage students to spend more time on exercise. Parents and students themselves should work together to cut down time spent on cellphones and computers. Parents can take their high school children out for climbing or simply running on weekends.
⑥As for the government, maybe it’s time to bring sports tests back to senior high school education. There is no need to make the tests extremely hard, but it’s necessary to remind students to work harder on sports. By giving students a push, we will see more and more students get out of the classroom and enjoy sports on the playground.
