Tree-planting Day is the day when some countries widely advertise (宣传) the helpful effects of forests, and encourage people to plant trees. In this way, people can be inspired to plant and love forests, and the environment will be improved. Many countries in the world have set their Tree-planting Day based on their own real situations.
Tree-planting Day is on March 12 every year in China. There are two reasons for it. One is the sunshine, because spring is very warm and good for trees to grow. The other is to memorize SunYat-sen, who is considered the “Father of Modern China” for his role in the events that led to the end of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. Sun Yat-sen passed away on March 12, 1925. When he was alive, he paid much attention to forests. China takes the death day of Sun Yat-sen as Chinese Tree-planting Day to memorize him. March 12, 2024 is China’s 46th Tree planting Day.
In America, Tree-planting Day is a state festival, so there is no nationwide date, but America will organize tree-planting activities in April or May every year, and even take a day off in some states. The first Tree-planting Day was held on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. People planted over one million trees on that day.
Every year, Cambodia celebrates Tree-planting Day (also called Arbor Day) in each of the twenty-five provinces of the country on July 9, with a tree-planting ceremony attended by the king of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
21. The first paragraph tells of the advantages of forests.22. March 12 is the date when Sun Yat-sen passed away.
23. Americans planted more than one million trees in April every year.
24. The king of the Kingdom of Cambodia takes Arbor Day seriously.
25. The passage is mainly about Tree-planting Day in different countries.
Have you ever been fined (罚款) for returning a book to the library after its due date? Here’s what some of the kids said about late fees.
Fiona Sheehy, 9, The US
Libraries should charge late fees. Paying a fee will teach kids to be responsible. And the money can help the library host fun events, which brings in more visitors. And it can be used to make the library a better place. So late fees are a must.
Aiden Robinson, 10, The US
Libraries should not charge late fees. Some people just need time to finish a book. I’ve read that fines at some libraries have reached $50 for a couple of book and many kids can’t afford that kind of money. And charging late fees doesn’t make people more responsible. What works is sending reminders.
Lahore, 12, Pakistan
Late fees are necessary. If there’s no penalty (处罚) for late returns, people might not make an effort to return books on time. When you borrow a book from a library, you’re entering into a contract (合约) . You’re promising to read the book in the time you’re given, to keep it safe, and to bring it back by a fixed time. Otherwise, you’re breaking a trust.
Liat Brody, 8, Canada
Late fees are unfair. People make mistakes. If they’re charged for their mistake, they might think they shouldn’t go to the library at all. The library should encourage reading. Late fees do just the opposite. They make borrowing a library book seem unworthy of the trouble. We should be able to borrow a book without having to worry about paying a fee. That’s how a library should be.
26. How many kids agreed on late fees in this passage?A.Only one. | B.Two. | C.Three. | D.Four. |

The elephant-foot drum is the most typical musical instrument of the Dai ethnic group. Xie Wenping, 32, used to follow his grandfather who made elephant-foot drums for a living to learn how to make a drum. “I decided to make more and better drums when I grew up,” Xie said. While elephant-foot drums carry great cultural importance, making an elephant-foot drum is no easy task. “Making an elephant-foot drum takes about 30 steps and one month,” Xie explained.
After picking the wood, one needs to carve (雕刻) the wood into an elephant-leg-like shape and hollow out (挖空) the inside. The drum surface is made of cowhide (牛皮), which needs to go through several steps such as leather selection, cleaning, air drying and cutting. Then comes the painting, during which the drum is painted with patterns showing ethnic elements and coated with a protective topcoat (防护面漆). The finishing steps include tuning, and polishing the fur.
“A good elephant-foot drum should have a thick and loud sound when beaten,” Xie said.
The repetition of the work might not be the most exciting, but whenever Xie sees his grandfather’s smile while making the drum, he feels encouraged again. “Over the years, the number of craftspeople skilled in making elephant-foot drums has gone down,” Xie said. “I feel like it’s my responsibility to carry it on.”
Xie has innovated (创新) the form of the drum. To make it easier for the elephant-foot drum to spread to places outside Yunnan, Xie came up with the idea of making a mini version of the drum and designed key chains shaped like the elephant-foot drum.

Water is important for all living things on Earth. The water cycle (循环) is a natural process that takes water from the ground and the sky and brings it back to the earth again. It is a cycle that happens the whole year and is most active from March to June in China.
The water cycle always begins with water vapour (蒸汽). When it’s hot outside, you can see clouds forming in the sky. These clouds are made of water vapour that comes from the ground, plants and rivers. As water vapour rises into the sky, it cools down and becomes clouds. After that, clouds travel through the sky and fall back to Earth as rain or snow. Then, water runs through rivers and oceans and finally returns to the earth again in different forms like rainwater or snow.
The water cycle plays an important role in protecting our Earth’s climate (气候). It provides us with water to drink and keeps our climate healthy. On top of that, it takes water from rivers and oceans and brings it to the areas that don’t have enough water. Without the cycle, we would face many problems. When there is too much water in one place, it becomes a flood. When water is badly in need, it becomes a drought. Besides, water vapour can take heat from the sun and keep our planet cool.
The water cycle is a natural process that keeps our planet alive. It’s important for plants and animals to drink water and for our rivers to stay flowing with water. Understanding the water cycle can help us enjoy the beauty of nature, know how our planet works and develop better methods to protect our Earth. And that is a responsibility we should take on.
