Tree-planting Day is the day when some countries widely advertise (宣传) the helpful effects of forests, and encourage people to plant trees. In this way, people can be inspired to plant and love forests, and the environment will be improved. Many countries in the world have set their Tree-planting Day based on their own real situations.
Tree-planting Day is on March 12 every year in China. There are two reasons for it. One is the sunshine, because spring is very warm and good for trees to grow. The other is to memorize SunYat-sen, who is considered the “Father of Modern China” for his role in the events that led to the end of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. Sun Yat-sen passed away on March 12, 1925. When he was alive, he paid much attention to forests. China takes the death day of Sun Yat-sen as Chinese Tree-planting Day to memorize him. March 12, 2024 is China’s 46th Tree planting Day.
In America, Tree-planting Day is a state festival, so there is no nationwide date, but America will organize tree-planting activities in April or May every year, and even take a day off in some states. The first Tree-planting Day was held on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. People planted over one million trees on that day.
Every year, Cambodia celebrates Tree-planting Day (also called Arbor Day) in each of the twenty-five provinces of the country on July 9, with a tree-planting ceremony attended by the king of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
1. The first paragraph tells of the advantages of forests.2. March 12 is the date when Sun Yat-sen passed away.
3. Americans planted more than one million trees in April every year.
4. The king of the Kingdom of Cambodia takes Arbor Day seriously.

In Britain, Boxing Day (节礼日) is usually celebrated on December 26th. It is the following day after Christmas Day. However, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it’s a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.
The origin (起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages. When great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by an important person on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to have a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the important person. But he wouldn’t open it to share them with the poor until Christmas.
One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. The people put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day. They give away their time, services and money to Food Banks. And they provide gifts for the poor to help families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.

This week, scientists made a breakthrough (突破). They have developed a method to “time jump” cells in human skin. The scientists are from the Babralham Institute in Cambridge, UK. They said they could turn back the ageing clock in cells by 30 years. They added that this could make skin look younger. Skin cells in their tests kept all of the important functions (功能). The scientists said their work was still at an early stage, but they were sure it could help people look younger in the future.
The technique developed by the scientists could change medicine and health. The lead researcher, Dr Diljeet Gill, said, “So far, we’ve only tested this technique in skin cells. We’re excited to see if we can translate it across other cell types. “This means it could be used to treat skin problems. The scientists hope their technique could also be used to help other parts of the body. Their new method could also help to heal (愈合) cuts more quickly, especially in older people. Researcher Dr Wolf Reik said, “If you cut yourself, it’ll take quicker to heal the wound.” The scientists said their work might one day help us look younger. I’m not very picky (挑剔的) about blood types. In fact, I cannot tell which blood type you are. Only doctors can do that. So how do I choose who to bite?
I can smell the carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) on people’s breath. The more you breathe out, the more easily I can find you. This means larger and fatter people are more likely to get my “kiss”.
I can also find food by smelling. You play outside and start sweating (出汗) all over. I can smell the lactic acid (乳酸) in your sweat. So yummy!
I also use my eyes to find food. But my eyesight (视力) is not very good. If you are trying to avoid me, do not wear colors such as black, red or dark blue.
It’s only females who have a taste for blood. They need it for their eggs. Male mosquitoes do not bite. For a proud mosquito mother, not just any blood will do.

China’s southernmost city
If you are bored of Hainan’s more popular tourist cities, such as Sanya and Haikou, you may want to go to Sansha instead. Sansha is China’s southernmost city. It includes many small islands, sandbanks and reefs in the Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha island groups. Its government is seated on the island of Yongxing. Since Sansha was established in 2012, a hospital, a library and a movie theater have been built on Yongxing. Over 2.5 million plants have been planted there to protect the environment.
The “migratory birds”
Migratory birds fly from the north to the south in winter. In China, a group of people are also referred to as “migratory birds”. Every year, from October to April, people from all over China go on holiday to Hainan to enjoy the warm weather and fresh air. Most of them are elderly people from northern China, especially Northeast China. According to the Hainan local government, more than 1 million elderly choose to spend their winter in Hainan each year. These elderly “migratory birds” also encourage younger family members to join them on the sunny island.
A famous forum(论坛)
People in other countries might not know about Hainan, but they probably know about Boao. Boao, a town in Hainan, became China’s first permanent(永久的) site for hosting international meetings in 2001. Every year in April, the Boao Forum for Asia, a nongovernmental international organization, hosts its annual meetings. Officials, business people and experts from different countries come to Boao to discuss economic issues.
The forum has been important for the development of Asian cities. Hainan and Boao have both benefited(收益) greatly from hosting the conferences. Have you ever put your old clothes into the donation box in your neighborhood? If not, you can do it right now because the clothes donation is becoming a trend (趋势) in Urumqi.
''From time to time, my mother clears out the clothes which I no longer wear. You know, we teenagers are growing fast. I think it's a good way to help others. '' Lin Tao, a junior student says.
''I often pick out some of my clothes which are out of style (过时)after going shopping. Then I'll put them into the donation box. '' Miss Li, a pretty young lady says.
''That seems like a good idea. Some clothes in the box are quite new. People can either wear them or use them to make things such as handbags and pencil cases. '' Mrs. Wang, an old woman says, ''Sometimes I also look through the box for some nice clothes. ''
However, there are some problems along with the popularity of clothes donation. Recently, a UTV reporter from Focus on the City has made a survey. Here are the results:
◆The box is full of clothes in a short time. There is no more room for people to give away clothes.
◆Some people sell the clothes in the donation box for making money instead of wearing them.
◆Some communities set the box in unsuitable places. So there are few clothes in it.
◆Many clothes are too old and shabby(破烂的).
◆Some people throw rubbish into the box when they pass by.
In order to make the donation box work in an efficient (有效的) way, our government is taking action. Clothes donation will be better-organized and it'll be more convenient for people in need to take the clothes away.
