On March 23, a single goal led China to beat South Korea 1-0 in the 2018 World Cup qualifying match(预选赛)in Changsha, Hunan province. It is only China’s second victory over South Korea in the past 32 games these years.
So who scored the winning goal? It was Chinese striker Yu Dabao, 28, who plays for Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League.
He was born to a soccer-mad father in Qingdao, Shandong province. As a kid, Yu also fell in love with the game. When he was young, his father took him to training on the back of his motorcycle, no matter how bad the weather was. He made such fast progress that he was accepted into the Qingdao youth team aged just 11 years old.
FIFA called Yu “China’s lucky star”, since he’s saved his team many times in important games. Modest Yu said: “As a player, you need to work hard and get prepared so that you can live up to expectations when the chance comes.”
And he has indeed. In 2014, without any commercial sponsorship (商业赞助), he joined Benfica in Portugal on a three-year deal, making him the first Chinese player to do so. “I improved my skills and also learn how to read a game,” he told FIFA.
And he’s not only devoted to soccer, but to languages, too. He found time to learn between matches as he thought it was important to communicate with his coaches and teammates. Now the talented Chinese player can also speak English and Portuguese.
29. What can we learn from the passage?A.It’s very difficult for Yu Dabao to speak either English or Portuguese. |
B.China beat South Korea twice in the 2018 World Cup qualifying match. |
C.Yu Dabao was refused to join Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League. |
D.Yu Dabao often scores at important games because of his good preparation. |
A.Better late than never. | B.No pain, no gain. |
C.It never rains but it pours. | D.Many hands make light work. |
①He became the first Chinese player to join the Benfica.
②He made a lot of progress after he trained hard at a young age.
③He helped China to beat South Korea in the qualifying match.
④He learned Portuguese and improved his soccer skills without commercial sponsorship.
A.③②①④ | B.②③④① | C.③①②④ | D.②①④③ |
The way we spend our time can be divided into three groups, or “jars”. These would be the necessary tasks jar, the voluntary tasks jar and the happiness jar.
Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks jar. We fill this jar with useful things, like earning money, housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another jar with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This jar gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and doing laundry. Those jars are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our households won’t run properly.
However, we often forget to fill the third jar – the happiness jar. This is the jar that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness jar sometimes empty at the end of the day? We all have days like that. Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by on some days, and before we know it, it is time for bed.
That is why each day we have to make an effort to fill our happiness jar. Most days, I fill mine by going to ballroom dance class with my husband and daughter. Between the music, the dancing and the friendship among the students, I always leave classes happier than when I entered.
Music is another way that I fill my happiness jar. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in an orchestra (管弦乐队) practice at my church. Our church isn’t large, but we are blessed with a lot of musical talent. A small group of us met to practice Christmas music for a church service. It was a time of fun, fellowship and music-making. At the end of the evening, my happiness jar was filled to overflowing.
This week, consider how your time is being spent. Are you doing enough activities that bring joy to your life? Or are the necessary and voluntary tasks eating up all your time? Try to find ways to achieve a balance between how you are filling your three jars. At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that our happiness jar is filled.
32. Which of the following might belong to the voluntary tasks jar?A.Making enough money. | B.Singing and dancing. |
C.Repairing tools for someone. | D.Getting high marks in exams. |
A.my happiness went beyond words | B.my jar was filled with water |
C.my happiness was emptied after a tiring day | D.my joy was like the water in the jar |
A.We seldom fill the happiness jar. |
B.We all hate the necessary tasks jars. |
C.We should always empty the happiness jar. |
D.We should find methods of achieving a balance. |
A.Enjoy ourselves | B.Give a helping hand | C.Three jars in life | D.Take part in activities |

FUN WITH COOKIE
Paul: “I have been working for this company for ten years, however they chose the new guy for promotion(升职) over me.”
Julia: “Well, that’s just the way the cookie breaks into pieces.”
This is an informal expression that means bad things happen in life and there is nothing you can really do to prevent it. It’s not worth getting sad; you should just try and accept it calmly.
Of course in the UK we would generally use the word “biscuit” instead of cookie when talking about those hard baked, sweet, flat cakes which are so popularly eaten with a cup of tea. Cookie is originally a Dutch term meaning little cake and has spread to the United States because of immigration(移民) from Holland.
Also in the US we can find “fortune cookies” which are usually served with Chinese food. However they are almost unknown in mainland China and were invented in California by Asian immigrants. They are crisp cookies with pieces of paper inside, on which are written clever sayings, prophecies(预言) or words of wisdom.
A cookie in computing is a collection of information which is used by websites to know users who have visited the site before. They are stored on your computer when you use the Internet, and also you will find the websites you used easily.
A cookie can also be a person. A tough cookie is unemotional(冷漠的) and a hard businessman while a smart cookie is sharp, clever and not easily fooled.
Biscuit and cookie is just one example of the difference between British and American words.
