This Friday, across the US, kids are going to work with their parents instead of going to school. They can help their parents do some cleaning, send e-mails and etc. Because April 28 is Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US.
I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. But after only 40 minutes of driving around the city, I was very bored. I couldn't read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车)and my dad didn't like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. People wouldn't get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me--so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. In fact, I started to miss the school.
Although the purpose of the day is to give kids a chance to experience possible jobs in the future, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to value school life. Where else can you play with your friends, do science experiments and read great books all in one day?
You'll have to learn to love your job later in life, so learn to love school now. If you don't, try spending the day at work with your dad.
31. Take Our Sons and Daughter to Work Day is celebrated on April 28 in the UK.32. The writer's father was probably a taxi driver.
33. In fact, the day for the writer was not as interesting as she had expected.

Since last year, short videos have gotten tons of attention online. Many people create and share short videos on popular video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. You can even add music and special effects (特效) to your videos. The videos are 15 seconds to a few minutes long. They show people doing activities like cooking, exercising and singing.
Teenagers especially enjoy these videos. Many junior high school students said they enjoyed watching these short videos. The videos let teenagers see funny and exciting things they don't usually see. Many teens like to share the fun things they do with others as well. For example, a 12-year-old user named Xiaoqianyu has posted videos showing her learning jazz dance. This has won her many fans.
However, the videos can also cause trouble. Some students spend too much time watching them and not enough time studying.
To deal with this problem, Douyin added a new function (功能) in April. It locks the app if someone uses the app for over two hours a day. In the same month, the government asked companies to regulate(管理) these apps much more strictly.

The shock of the earthquake in Pakistan has brought another shock: the rise of a mysterious island, coming out from the water.
In the aftershock of the earthquake, people living in Grabian Sea and saw a mountain-like shape coming out of the water. “It looked like a huge whale,” Bahram Baloch, a local reporter, told the BBC. “Lots of people gathered to watch it. ”
So what happened? The force of the earthquake was so strong that it moved the sea floor, releasing gas(释放气体). This gas pushed the seabed, mostly rock and sand, out of the water. This was how the mud volcano (泥火山) was formed. The island which is about 20 meters high, 30 meters long and 90 meters wide is actually the top of the mud volcano.
Is it safe? Although people have visited this new island, scientists have found dangerous gas coming from the newly formed island. “It will catch fire, when a match was lit,” said Mohammad Danish, a scientist, to Universe Today.
The mud volcano is strange because mud volcanoes seldom appeared in an area where people often live, and not far out in the sea. It is a special one. However, it’s not expected to last very long. Most of these mud volcanoes are swept back under the sea within one year.

Do you mind sharing your test scores with others?
On May 16, Guo Ruiting , 14 from Shenzhen Foreign Language School, had a big debate (辩论) with her classmates on this topic.
Guo believed that making the scores public would make students study harder. At first, she explained many theories (理论) that she had collected on the Internet. But they were too difficult to understand. So she was easily beaten by her opponent (对方) Du Xiaoshe.
“Publishing the results of our tests is bad for us,” said Du. He came to this conclusion (结论) after he failed his history exam one month ago. He thought it was just an accident. But he felt so hurt when his parents got a list of his marks. It also showed the marks of other students in his class.
His experience seemed to have won over many students. But Guo’s team didn’t give up.
“Don’t you forget the time when we all worked harder after knowing the average mark of Class 2?” asked Guo. “We’d have never been so good if we didn’t know how far we were behind. So it’s good to know others’ marks,” said Guo.
These words encouraged Du. He partly agreed with Guo’s team. He thought it was good to show the average mark of each class but not individual (个人的) marks. This is the perfect way to respect their privacy (隐私) and make them work hard as well.

Once upon a time, there lived a kind-hearted king. He loved birds and animals, and had a huge bird sanctuary (禁猎区) in his kingdom. He disliked harming the animals and birds. He did not kill them for meat. One day, the king was sent two beautiful birds by a businessman. The king ordered the trainer to make them feel comfortable in their country.
One day, the king saw one bird fly very high, very quickly. However, the other bird just sat on the branch (树枝) and didn’t move even a step. The trainer said that he had tried everything he could but still failed to make the bird move. Soon, the king announced that he needed someone to make it move and fly.
A few weeks later, an old man reached the king’s palace and assured him that he would make the bird fly like the other one. The king asked the trainer to take the old man to train the bird. The next day, the king went to visit the old man. He was surprised to see the other bird fly like the first one to great height at rapid speed. The king was very happy and sent the old man quite a few gold coins and asked the old man what he had done to make the bird fly in a day.
The old man simply replied, “I just cut down the branch of the tree where the bird used to sit on. ”

Roman numerals were invented over 2,500 years ago. They came from ancient Roman. The Romans were active in trade and business. They had a system of writing, but they needed a way to record numbers so they developed their own system of numbers. That was Roman numerals.
Around 500 AD, a new number system was born in India. It was later known as Arabic numbers because it was largely used by Arabian businessmen and people. Roman popes (教皇) stopped the use of Arabic numbers when the new system came to Europe. They said that Roman numerals were invented by God and were perfect to use. However, compared with Arabic numbers, Roman numerals didn't have a symbol for zero and were too complicated ( 复杂) to use. From the 14th century on, Roman numerals began to be taken place by the more convenient Arabic numbers.
Today, people still use Roman numerals, though not so often. You may find these numbers on some clocks or the front pages of books. You may also see them after the names of kings, queens or popes ( e. g. Elizabeth II ). Sometimes they are used on gravestones (墓碑) as well.
