Life used to be quite hard for disabled people like me. I can’t use my arms or legs well, so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or____________________things are difficult for me. What would it be like to be blind or deaf? It would be much harder than you can_____________________. Luckily, things are getting much better these days.

One day last year, a friend of mine helped me out. She talked to Animal Helpers about getting me a special trained dog. Animal Helpers was set up to help disabled people. My friend also thought a dog might_____________________me up. I love animals and I was excited about the idea of having a dog. After six months of___________________with a dog at Animal Helpers, I was able to bring him home. My dog’s name is Lucky--- a good name for him because I feel very lucky to have him. I am able to have a “dog helper” because of people’s kindness. Lucky is very clever and understands many English words. He can understand me when I give him_____________________. For example, I say, “Lucky! Get my book,” and he does it at once. He is a fantastic dog.

After Bill Adams retired (退休), his daughter, a nurse, asked if he wanted to volunteer at her hospital. Bill didn’t think he wanted to be around___________________people, but his daughter said, “Just try it   for a week and see how you feel.”

Thirteen years later, Bill   is__________________volunteering at the hospital two days a week. He says, “Volunteering is a good thing to do, and helping others makes me____________________.” Over the years,   Bill has worked in many departments ( 科 ). Calvin Gillian didn’t believe that Norway was the place for an adventurous (惊险的) holiday.

However, his brother and some friends told him to go there and he enjoyed it.

“I’m an extreme sports ( 极限运动) lover. I have traveled to many different countries, but I didn’t expect Norway to be a good place for an adventurous holiday. People usually visit Norway to go fishing and boating to enjoy a relaxing holiday, or to go climbing to enjoy the beauty of nature. But I didn’t go for them; I wanted adventure.

“Skiing (滑雪) is the most unforgettable thing I did in Norway. I went skiing in Svartisen. I had to wear special clothes, because skiing there could be very dangerous. Svartisen is a very special and beautiful place. The ice there is not the usual white but blue, like the sea.

“I also visited the Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo. It was fantastic to look from the top of the ski jump (滑雪跳台) and the ski museum was very interesting. I wanted to try a jump but unluckily, it didn’t open when I visited. Anyway, I was very tired and needed a break, so I went back to my hotel and got some sleep.

“Next year, I am going to take my sister to Norway, too. She is having her holiday with our parents in Australia now and she wants to have a different kind of adventure next year.”

Barbara was driving her six-year-old son, Ben, to his piano lesson. They were late, and Barbara was beginning to think she should have called it off. Barbara, a nurse at the local hospital, was very tired at that moment. The coldest season and the terrible weather just brought them more difficulties.

"Mum!" Ben cried suddenly. "Look!" Just ahead, a car had lost control on the icy road and crashed (猛撞) into a telephone pole. Barbara stopped her car quickly and opened the door. She said to Ben, "Dear, promise me you'll stay in the car!" "I will, Mum," Ben said as his mum ran. She was a nurse—she might be able to help the unlucky people.

It was terrible. Two girls aged about 18 were in the car. One was dead and the other was still breathing. Barbara quickly cleaned the wounds in the driver's head. Ben called for help on his mum's phone. Soon an ambulance came. "Good job, Barbara, you've saved her life," one doctor said as he examined the driver's wounds. Barbara walked back to her car with a feeling of sadness, especially for the family of the girl who had died. Later, Barbara was able to meet the family of the driver. They expressed their thanks to Barbara for the help she had provided.

The date was like any other day in his life. After school David walked past the shop on the street corner. He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have a new pair for his birthday.

He sadly walked away and thought of how to tell his mother. He knew she would give him anything if she could. But he also knew very well she had little money. He decided not to go home at once, as he looked worried and he didn't want to make his mother worry about it. So he went to the park and there he sat on the grass. Then he saw a girl in a wheel chair. He found that the girl moved the wheels with her hands. David looked at her carefully and was surprised to see that the girl had no feet. He looked down at his own feet. "It is much better to be without shoes than without feet." It was not right for him to feel so sorry and sad. He went away and smiled, thinking he was luckier in life.

When a man was walking by some elephants, he suddenly stopped. He wondered why these huge animals were being held only by a small rope(绳子) tied to their front legs. No chains, no cages. It was    46     that the elephants could break their bonds(束缚) at any time, but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a man who    47    elephants nearby and asked why the animals just stood there and didn’t try getting away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they were very young and much smaller,we used the same rope    48    them from running away. At that age, it’s    49    to hold them. As they grow up, they get used to believing they cannot    50    he rope. They believe it can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was    51    . These animals could break free whenever they wanted, but because they    52    they couldn’t, they were stuck (受困的) right where they were.

How many of us go through life like the elephants – holding onto the belief that we cannot do something    53    because we failed at it once before?

Failure(失败) is a part of    54    . If we failed once, it doesn’t mean we can never be     55    . We should never give up trying when we encounter failures in life.

Seeing blood in a scary movie might make you cover your eyes, but real blood isn’t scary at all.    56    That’s why blood donors are thought to be lifesavers.

Blood donors are those giving blood — usually about 200ml at a time — to blood banks or blood donation (捐赠) centers.    57    For example, someone may have lost blood in accidents, or have a serious illness that requires his blood to be replaced. Hospitals and blood banks store the blood and try to keep enough on hand.

    58    Medical workers ask donors several questions to make sure the blood is safe to use. Then the donors relax, often reading a magazine or talking as their blood is drawn. Afterward, the donors may receive some juice or water and maybe fruit to give them energy. The process is simple, not scary.    59    To give blood, a person must be at least 18 years old and must meet certain other requirements.

Students of all ages, though, can learn more about the donation process by visiting a local blood donation center.    60    It is also an easy way to help a community.
