China Turns to Internet for Food During the-Novel Coronavirus Fears
During the virus outbreak(爆发)in China, Wang Feng had to stay at home. But thanks to the e-commerce giant JD.com(电商巨头,京东), she can keep her kitchen full of food. More and more people has chosen to buy food online since China's government told the public to stay home to control the spread of the virus.
On Tuesday, Wang's phone buzzed震动)with a text message that a delivery(快递)had arrived. She put on a face mask and went out of her house to collect walnut milk and other goods from shelves on the sidewalk(人行道)—an anti-virus(防病毒的)measure to limit contact with drivers who normally go door to door.
The government has told anyone who can work from home to stay there. Some cities have allowed only one member of a family out each day. That creates a ready market for online entertainment and shopping.
“I can't go out and can't go to work,” said one of Wang's neighbors, Chen Guang who was picking up a box of vegetables from the sidewalk shelves under a sign that said, “Contactlesse Distribution(分配)Point.”
JD says over the past month, its drivers delivered(运送)71,500 tons of rice, flour and other grains-20times more than the same period last year, 27 million liters(公升)of cooking oil and 50,000 tons of meat, eggs, vegetables and other fresh products.

Tim and Jim lived in the same village. They were both hard-working and had a happy life with other villagers.
But that year, there was a serious drought(旱灾) happening in their village. Their fields were all dry and their crops were dying. They couldn’t get enough water for their crops until a visitor from a village next to theirs came. The visitor told them that there was a spring on the mountain near their village and it had a large amount of water to water their fields. So Tim went to find it with two big buckets(桶) at once and later he began to carry water for his field every morning. He earned water from morning to night, but that wasn’t enough for his field. Jim also went to find the spring with Tim, but he didn’t carry water the next day. He also left the village in the early morning and then came back at night. Three days had passed, many villagers didn’t see Jim in the daytime. They began to ask him where he went. Jim smiled and just told them to wait for his good news. Then the next day, at noon, Jim and a line of pieces of bamboo appeared in front of his field. When he joined the last piece of bamboo from the mountain with another one’s end, water ran along them into his field. With Jim’s help, all the other villagers’ fields got water by joining pieces of bamboo with his and were saved. And Tim needn’t carry water with two heavy buckets, either.
There’s no doubt that being hard-working is a good quality. But hard work with good ideas is much better.

In earliest times, men considered lightning to be one of the great mysteries of nature. Some ancient people believed that lighting and thunder were the weapons(武器) of the gods. In reality, lightning is a flow(流动) of electricity formed high above the earth. A single flash of lighting 1.6 kilometers long has enough electricity to light one million light bulbs(灯泡).
The American scientist, Benjamin Franklin, was the first to show the connection between electricity and lightning in 1752. In the same year, he also built the first lightning rod (避雷针). This device(装置物) protects buildings from being damaged by lighting.
Modern science has discovered that one stroke(闪击) of lightning has a voltage(电压) of more than 15 million volts. A flash of lightning between a cloud and the earth may be as long as 13 kilometers, and travel at a speed of 30 million meters per second.
Scientists judge that there are about 2,000 million flashes of lightning per year. Lightning hits the Empire State Building in New York City 30 to 48 times a year. In the United States alone it kills an average(平均数) of one person every day.
The safest place to be in case of an electrical storm is in a closed car. Outside, one should go to low ground and not get under trees. Also, one should stay out of water and away from metal fences. Inside a house, people should avoid open doorways and windows and not touch wires or metal things.
With lightning, it is better to be safe than sorry?

Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a telepresence system(远程遥控系统)—allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators(自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. Actually, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, the head of a research company.

Qingming, meaning clear and bright, is the most important festival in spring. It is also named Tomb Sweeping Festival. It comes in early of the fourth month of a year. On that day, people visit tombs( 墓 ) to honor the dead. They always spend some time cleaning the tomb area. They usually plant some trees near the tombs and decorate them with fresh flowers. But it’s not just a day honoring the dead. It is also a good time to celebrate the coming of spring.
With the coming of spring, nature wakes up, dressing the world in green. Birds begin to build houses for their babies. In forests and fields, many animals have babies at this time of the year. Days begin to get longer and weather get warmer. In short, everything is new, clean and fresh. So Qingming is also a happy time for people to do sports outdoors, such as flying kites, swimming and hiking. This is why this festival has been very popular for thousands of years.
