July 16^th was a bad day for Mr. Arthur Johnson. In the morning he got out of his home in Santa Barbara, California. It was the start of his summer holidays and he decided to visit friends at Las Vegas. Then he hoped to go fishing in Lane Mead, 40 km from Las Vegas.

Johnson’s troubles started while he was driving happily across the Mojave Desert. His car went wrong and he tried to repair it. Then, to make things worse, his attempts（尝试）to start the car drained(耗尽) the battery and left it useless. After Johnson had waited for an hour in the hot sun, a Canadian driver, Johnson Williams, stopped and tried to help him. When both men failed, Williams promised to telephone a workshop to ask it to send a truck to pull the car away and repair it.

Johnson left the keys in his car and sat under the large tree. Soon he fell asleep. While he was sleeping ,a repair truck arrived from San Pedro(the nearest town) and pulled his car away. Later on, Johnson woke up and thought that somebody had stolen his car. He started to walk back towards San Pedro but a police car stopped him to find out why he was walking in the desert.

Johnson looked like an wanted man in Los Angels for robbery, so the police detained（拘留）him at San Pedro for the night. The next day, Johnson telephoned his friends in Los Angeles. They drove to San Pedro and made the police believe that Johnson was a harmless salesman, so they set him free（释放）.

According to a famous optical expert(光学专家)，Alexander, who recently visited Shanghai, the developed countries in Europe（欧洲） and America have made rules that children must wear resinous(树脂) glasses instead of the traditional glasses made of glass. This is because the glasses are more likely to do harm to children’s eyesight.

Alexander pointed out, wearing the right glasses as soon as possible is still the best way to cure and put right children’s eyesight problems.

In America and Japan, the resinous glasses have taken up 80 percent of the glasses market. And some European countries and America have made it a law that children, teenagers and drivers must wear resinous glasses.

Now, about 10 million children in China have different eyesight problems and they need timely treatment.

Chicago is a great town. I love it. We have two baseball teams here, the Cubs and the White Sox. I like the Cubs. The White Sox are boring and they’re losers（失败者）, too. I never go to their games. That building is 100 floors high! That’s too high, if you ask me. If there is a fire on the 85^th or 90^th floor, how are the firemen going to put it out? There’s no chance……Look over there.

There’s a large building. It’s the Sears Tower. That building is 110 floors high! Do you see those buildings there? They are the Marina City Apartments. They have 60 floors each. Thousands of people in each one . Imagine that, all those people in two buildings. It’s terrible to have so many neighbours. There’s the Merchandise Mart. That’s another big building. Do you know what’s in the building? There are stores, restaurants, a bank, a post office, a radio station and a TV station. It’s too crowded, well, here we are. Remember, ask any taxi driver about Chicago. We know everything about this town.

A giant panda from the Beijing Zoo has been saved by a transfusion（输血）of blood from two black bears. But it’s still under special care, according to the Beijing Zoo.

Yong Liang, two years old, is the first giant panda raised from birth in the zoo. Last month zoo keepers found the panda was suffering from serious anemia（贫血）, calling for urgent（紧急的）blood transfusion.

The best way, according to zoo’s experts（专家）, to save Yong Liang from anemia would have been to transfuse blood from another panda. But it was the breeding（繁殖） season for giant pandas, making such a transfusion very difficult.

But the experts found that there is a close consanguinity（血缘）between giant pandas and black bears, so they decided to try to take blood from black bears in the zoo and transfuse it to Yong Liang.

With the help of hospitals and Beijing Blood Donor Station（献血站）, they make an experiment which proved that the red blood cells（细胞）in the blood of black bears can be used.

On the afternoon of February15th the first red blood cell transfusion was given to the giant panda, from 600ml of black bear blood. Immediately the young panda started to get well again.

Big ocean（海洋） fish have almost been endangered since the start of business fishing in the 1950s. The scientists found that the number of large fish has dropped by 90 percent in the past fifty years. The study took ten years. The researchers（研究人员）collected records from fishing businesses and governments around the world. The magazine Nature published(发表) the findings.

The scientists say the common way called long-line fishing is especially harmful to large fish. This way includes many fishing lines that are connected to one boat. If these lines are joined together, they can reach one hundred kilometers. They hold thousands of sharp metal hooks(钩) to catch fish. Long-line fishing is especially common in the Japanese fishing industry. Records showed that Japanese boats used to catch about ten fish for every one hundred hooks. The study says long-line fishing boats now might catch one fish per hundred hooks.

The scientists say business fishing can destroy groups of fish much faster than in the past. It’s not the only worry that the number of large fish is becoming smaller and smaller. What’s worse, they are smaller in size than their ancestors（祖先）.
