Our house was across the street from a big hospital, so we rented our empty upstairs rooms to outpatients (门诊病人) .One evening, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly sick-looking man.
His face looked terrible—it was swollen (肿胀的) and red. Yet his voice was pleasant He told me that he came for treatment and that he'd been hunting for a spare room since noon, but no one would give him one because of his face.
For a moment I hesitated (犹豫), but he said he would be happy to just sleep on our porch (门廊), I agreed.
The old man had a huge heart inside his tiny body. He told me that he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her crippled (残废的) husband.
He didn't complain while telling me his story. He was grateful that he didn't feel any pain from his disease, which was seemingly a form of skin cancer (皮肤癌).
The next morning, he said, "Can I come back and stay the next time I need treatment?" I told him he was welcome to come again.
On his next trip, as a gift, he brought a big fish and some large oysters (牡蛎) .In the years that he stayed with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us gifts like these.
My neighbor warned me that I could lose potential (潜在的) renters by putting up the old man after he left the first morning.
Maybe we did lose renters once or twice. But if only they could have known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have. Known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude (谢意).

Spring is beautiful But not everyone loves this season. The wind in spring brings pollen (花粉) and dust(灰尘) .This makes some people sneeze and itch (发痒) .Why does this happen? Let's find out!
Your eyes itch. Your nose is running. You are sneezing. And you have rashes (疹子) on your skin (皮肤) .This is caused-by allergies (过敏)! Allergies are caused by your immune system (免疫系统) , Usually, your immune system fights against germs (细菌) to keep you healthy but when you have allergies, it acts differently and fights against things like grass, pollen or some foods. This makes you feel uncomfortable.
There are many different kinds of allergies. Food allergies are some of the most common. Many children are allergic to foods like milk, eggs and peanuts.
Some people are also allergic to pollen. They may sneeze or cough when pollen gets into their nose or eyes.
Medicine may also give people allergies. For example, penicillin (青霉素) can be fatal to some people.
Some people can't even touch water. They have a hard time taking baths.
However, there is a way to find out what you are allergic to: Skin testing. Doctors put samples of different allergens on your skin. Then they wait to see if the skin around the sample becomes red. Once you know what you are allergic to, the best thing to do is try to stay away from them.
