This was my mom’s first time to take part in a parent-teacher meeting in my school. I waited near the entryway by the big double door. I could see my mom “walking” towards the building - she moved one crutch at a time, and then, carefully swung one leg forward. The short sidewalk seemed long for her.
One of my classmates opened her mouth in surprise as she saw my mom. “What’s wrong with her?” she whispered. I thought for a few moments, feeling uncomfortable and said, “She had polio.”
My mother got polio when she was 6. She was really sick and had to stay in the hospital for 6 months. Although she got better and came back home, she was never able to walk.
Finally, my mom reached the double door. As was helping her to pass the first door, my classmate helped us open the second one. “Hi, Mrs. Ralph,” she said, smiling shyly. My mother returned her smile. “Thank you very much for holding the door. That’s big help to me.” “Does it hurt? The polio, I mean,” my friend asked. “No, dear, I just can’t walk very fast, that’s all.” You could see the bright smile on my friend’s face. “I’m glad it doesn’t hurt, Mrs. Ralph,” my friend said.
As my mom entered my classroom, I heard someone else asked again, “What’s wrong with her?” I felt terrible this time. My mom smiled and said, “It’s OK. They are just strange.”
In the following years, my mom’s visits to school always drew others’ attention. But as more children got to know her, more kids opened the door for her and said kind hellos to her. My mom always returned them with thanks and smiles.
I’d never thought much about how bad the effects of polio must have been for her. After all, when you grow up in a situation like that, it seems “normal” to you. It was from other people’s eyes that got to know my mom again. I began to recognize her with courage and self-worth when she walked through life-moving one crutch at a time, and then one leg forward.

A survey made by China Daily last year found that eight of 10 senior middle school students were nearsighted, compared with 71.6 percent in junior middle school, 36 percent in primary school and 14 percent of 6-year- olds in kindergarten. Overall, 53.6 percent were nearsighted.
The growing prevalence of myopia is not only a Chinese problem, but an especially East Asian one. In South Korea 96 percent of people (below the age 20) have myopia. In Singapore, the number is 82 percent. However, in the UK it is about 20-30 percent.
Some scientists think it is not good that so many students are nearsighted. It brings much trouble in their life, such as in the bathroom, the glasses people wear are easily covered by heat, which makes it impossible to see everything. What do you think if you put your glasses down before going to bed, you can’t find them in the morning?
Several factors have something to do with the high rate of nearsightedness in China’s children and teenagers, including lack of outdoor physical activities, lack of enough sleep due to heavy homework and too much use of electronics products.
Biologists compared Singaporeans living in Singapore to those living in Australia. They found that 29 percent of the Singaporean students had nearsightedness compared with just 3 percent in Sydney. The main reason was once again, time spent outside.
“The big difference was the Chinese children in Australia were outdoors lot more than their matched peers in Singapore,” says Ian Morgan, a retired biologist at Australian National University. “This was the only thing that fit with the huge difference in prevalence.”

There are many things we remember from our childhood - the games we played, the music we listened to, but what about earning pocket money? This was our first ever pay for completing tasks such as tidying our bedroom or sorting the clothes that need washing. What we got was a handful of coins that we safely hid away.
There was a time when cash was king. These days, though, using credit or debit cards, or making contactless payments are the easiest ways of paying.
But banks think that by 2028 only one in ten payments will be with cash, and that it’s something today’s children will have to deal with. One important topic is that children may not understand the value of cash because they never see it.
