Who invented films? It's difficult to say. Lots of people played a part in the development of the cinema. A man named Muybridge made the first moving picture in 1878. It was a film of a horse running and it was only a few seconds long. By 1895, other people had invented various machines for showing moving pictures, but many of these could only be watched by one person at a time. Thomas Edison was one of the first to show very short films to audiences of 20 or more people. His films showed acrobats(杂技演员)and dancers performing, or everyday events like a man sneezing!
At first, films were only a few minutes long. They were black and white and silent. They were usually documentaries about different places or news events, or comedies showing people falling over and making funny faces. Later they became longer stories, but there was still no sound. Instead, there might be a musician playing the piano in the hall while the film was shown.
Musicals were probably the most popular kind of film throughout the 1930s and 1940s. A very famous actress and singer at that time was Shirley Temple-she was only a five-year-old girl but everyone loved watching her sing and dance.
The very first film to be in colour and to have sound was shown in 1927. It was called The Jazz Singer. From then on, more and more films were produced in colour, and almost all films had sound.

Cruise ships, which sometimes carry as many as 5,000 passengers and workers, are like cities that travel across our seas. Cities produce a lot of rubbish, and so do cruise ships. But the rubbish from cities can be collected and taken away; this isn't true for the rubbish on cruise ships.
On a one-week voyage(航程), cruise ships create more than 50 tons of rubbish and one million gallons of what is called “grey water”—that is, water from bathrooms, kitchens and washing machines. There is also 210,000 gallons of toilet waste. Most of this rubbish is sent into the sea—some of it has been treated to make it safe, but some has not. This pollution has a terrible effect on sea animals. The pollution kills some fish, or makes them dangerous for humans to eat as they have eaten polluted weeds and smaller fish in the sea. Pollution from cruise ships causes a problem for everything that lives in the sea, and that problem is sometimes passed on to humans, because they eat seafood.
Plastic waste that may be thrown off ships and then floats on the surface of the water is extremely(非常地)dangerous for creatures like dolphins, turtles and sea birds. These creatures often die from eating bags and other items made of plastic.
There are organizations which are trying to protect the seas of the world. They are working with governments in different countries to try to change the rules that govern(管控)what can and cannot be put into the sea. Let's hope something is done to stop the pollution of our seas before it's too late.
Questions: Answer the following questions according to the passage. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
56. Can the rubbish from cruise ships be collected and taken away?
57. What is called “grey water”?
58. Why does the pollution from cruise ships affect humans?
59. What kind of waste does great harm to dolphins, turtles and sea birds?
60. How should people protect sea animals?
Glen was a smart boy, and his parents loved him very much, but he was often disobedient(不听话的).
His parents and his teacher wondered how they could improve his behaviour. They tried different ways of making Glen more obedient. They threatened(吓唬)him with punishments, they made him stay in his room, and they offered him rewards like extra pocket money. But all of these made no difference.
Glen's parents often had visitors at their house and Glen always behaved very well when they were there. He wanted the visitors to think he was an obedient child. All the visitors thought he was well behaved.
Then Glen's father had an idea. He told Glen that every time he was disobedient, he would put a nail(钉子)into the front door. Then when visitors came to the door, they would ask why there were nails in the front door. Glen would have to explain to them that he had been disobedient.
The next time Glen was disobedient, his father put a big nail into the door. He did this every time Glen was disobedient. Sometimes he had to put in three or four nails into the door on one day. Soon there were a lot of nails in the door.
A visitor came to the door. “Why do you have so many nails in the door?” he asked.
Glen's father made Glen explain the nails in the door. Glen was embarrassed(尴尬的)and decided to change his behaviour. His father agreed that he would remove one nail every time Glen was obedient.
Glen tried very hard to be obedient. Every time he did something good, his father removed one nail from the door. After a few weeks all the nails were gone.
Then a visitor came to the door. “Why do you have so many holes in your door?” he asked.
Questions: Please complete the summary of the passage above with no more than three words for each blank. 请完成上文的摘要,每空不超过三个单词。

Tom lives in a small village in southern France. He spends most of his time painting country subjects, like farmers, animals, and trees. His favourite place to paint is on a cliff overlooking a wide river. Sometimes boats go by, carrying all sorts of interesting things. He paints them, too.
Tom wasn’t always a painter. He once lived in a big city, selling things like televisions and radios. But 50 years in the city was enough for him. He now prefers life in the countryside and the peaceful feeling it brings him.
Tom is a polite and quiet man. He doesn’t talk much. Although he grew up in a loud city, he prefers to listen to the soft sounds of the fields, the animals, and the gently flowing river.
