My name is Toby. I’m eighty-three years old now. I once knew the greatest man in England. William Shakespeare was his name. I first met William near a big field of apple trees in the town named Stratford in October, 1579. He told me he was 15 years old. He was two years older than me. He had a sister, Joan, and two younger brothers, Gilbert and Richard. And the next year he had another brother, Edmund. After William’s parents died, he and his sister lived with his mother’s brother. I became his friend from that day until he died. We met nearly every day. We were friends for thirty years.
I once worked with him in the theatre, through the good times and the bad times. William was good at acting. He could make all kinds of people pleased. By 1592, he became very famous. He was always busy day and night. I didn’t know when he slept. He not only acted in plays, but also wrote his own plays. In his whole life, William wrote 37 plays in all. He was the best playwright in England.
He wrote a play about love in 1595. It was Romeo and Juliet. He once used my name, Toby, in his play — Twelfth Night. In this play, Sir Toby Belch was a big fat man, who liked drinking too much and having a good time. Queen Elizabeth the First watched this play on the 6th of January, 1601. She liked it.
William Shakespeare is dead now, of course. He has been dead for more than thirty years. There’s no singing, no dancing, no plays. It isn’t like that in my young days. But I can still think — and remember when William and I were young, we had a good time in London, William and I ...

I felt very sad not to be able to get the ticket for the film “Titanic” last Friday. I learned in the newspaper that tickets could be bought at the cinema box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the cinema was during my 45-minute lunch time. It is a pity that the cinema is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.
Last Monday I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes, waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip—so I had to go back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes. But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. I found that I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and went back across the town.
By Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to see the film. The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line. But I quickly found out that it was because they had already sold all the tickets.

D.It always took him about twenty minutes to get to the cinema by bus. |
A.How to Get a Ticket | B.Tickets Sold Out |
C.A Wonderful Film | D.A Difficult Problem |

This year Earth Hour is happening on the 19th of March. Earth Hour is an event where you turn off all unnecessary lights and power between 8 — 9 pm. However, you don’t just sit at home in the dark for an hour. Instead, people gather in groups and have fun without using power. Things like dancing, fireworks and musical performances are popular and it’s very fun to take part.
Many celebrities also take part in Earth Hour and this year is very important as it is the tenth year of the project. Earth Hour isn’t just about saving energy. People can do many other things to protect the environment.
I’m a big fan of trying to save the environment. I’ve taken part in Earth Hour every year for the last five years and I’ve been part of lots of activities at school and at university. Last year, for example, my university had an outdoor cycle cinema. At the cycle cinema, the only way to keep watching the film is to keep riding your bike. If anyone stops, then the screen turns off! Luckily, there were many of us to help keep the movie going and we took turns. It was very cold outside at night, but we had chocolate and blankets for the people who weren’t cycling. Everyone who was there had a lot of fun.
Here in my small town in Italy, Earth Hour isn’t a very big thing. In fact, few know what it is! I explained to some of my students what happened during Earth Hour and they were very keen to take part.
I think that Earth Hour is a very fun way to raise awareness (意识) about the environment. We only have one planet, so it is important to keep it safe. A lot of my students feel like, as young people, they can’t do that much to help protect the planet. In fact, anything can help. Earth Hour proves that even doing a little thing, like turning the light off for one hour, can make a difference. So let’s all take action now.
