If you go shopping in any toy store, you can see clearly the different games and toys for boys and girls: there are a lot of pink toys on one side of the store for girls; and dark-colored cars and guns for boys. Some big stores with toys may even have a pink floor for girls and a blue floor for boys. In fact, it is difficult to buy a toy for a girl that is not pink.
Some people think that too much pink is bad for girls. Sue Palmer, writer of Toxic Childhood, is very worried that most girls over the age of three are crazy about the color. According to some scientists, this happens for two reasons. Firstly, most companies offer too many products in pink. Also, many parents think their little daughter looks cute in pink. Sue Palmer says that girls at this age can not make proper decisions by themselves, but the pink can affect (影响) the choices and the decisions they will make in the future.
Some parents are worried too—for example, Vanessa Holburn, thirty-two, who has two girls under the age of four. Their bedrooms are a sea of pink and Vanessa is not happy. "Pink says that you are soft and gentle. Blue says that you are strong and powerful. I want my daughters to be strong and powerful. I'm worried that pink will not help them with that, "she says.
But not everyone thinks there's something wrong with pink. Grayson Turner is a father of three girls and he isn't worried at all. "My girls used to love pink when they were little, but as they get older, they change. Turner explains that his twelve-year-old daughter never wears pink clothes anymore." This love of pink is just a fashion (流行,时尚) and all fashions change," he adds. "It's only since the1940 s that people have started dressing girls in pink—before that it was a color for boys."

A.parents needn't worry about pink toys |

Dear Dr. Green, My relationship with my mother is worse and worse now. It seems she's never tired of talking. She talks here and there, day and night. More seriously, I feel like we don't have much in common. She doesn't always understand what I'm trying to say. What should I do? Yours, Jim |
Dear Jim, I know how you feel It's not easy being your age. And it's not easy being a mother, either. It's common for kids to have trouble talking with parents, and talkative mothers are not new to teenagers. But remember, she's nagging(唠叨) you because she just wants what's best for you. Talking is her way to show love and care. And she also wants to know more about you. After a day's work, she's tired, too. But she will never be tired of caring about you. Kids should learn to understand and care about parents. In my opinion, it's helpful to share school life with her. Then, you talk and she listens. Doing some housework together with her is another good way for you two to know each other better. And if possible, often tell her your feelings about the things around you. Always keep in mind be polite and patient. Yours, Dr. Green |
17. In Jim's eyes, his mother doesn't always understand what he's trying to say.
18. Dr. Green thinks it's common for kids to have trouble talking with his parents.
19. In Dr. Green's opinion, talking is a way for mothers to relax after a day's work.
20. Dr. Green explains three reasons for moms nagging and offers three suggestions.
Experts in nutrition(营养) suggest that we should eat at least five different kinds of vegetables and fruit a day. They are very necessary for our health and help our bodies work well. They can help reduce (减少) the risk of getting ill. There are a lot of vegetables and fruit to choose from and they taste delicious.
It's easy to buy our food from the local supermarket, so why do we go to the trouble of growing our own? Here are several good reasons:
You may want to cut down on your "food miles"-the distance that a product has travelled before it reaches your kitchen. Many food packages are flown halfway across the earth.
Homegrown food is likely to be healthier. Food producers often use fertilizers(化肥) and pesticides (农药) which can end up in your food. If you grow your own, things are different.
Happy gardening!
A.Best of all, you can grow your own!. |
B.But where to grow your own is a problem. |
C.That’s not so good for you, or for the planet. |
D.Food that you grow yourself is always fresh. |
E.If you have a large garden, growing your own is easy. |
F.You can control what goes on and into the food you eat. |
G.So it's better to eat more vegetables and fruit in our daily life. |

Some people still live in their hometown. However, others may only see it once or twice a year. Nowadays, millions of Chinese leave the countryside to search for work in the cities. Among these is Zhong Wei, a 46-year-old husband and father. He has lived in Wenzhou for the last 13 years. With a hard job in a crayon factory, he doesn't find much time to visit his hometown. "I used to return home at least once a year, but I haven't been back for almost three years now. It's a shame, but I just don't have the time," he says.
Many people like Zhong Wei regard with great interest how their hometowns have changed. Perhaps large hospitals and new roads have appeared. In many places, the government has also built new schools and sent teachers from the cities to help.
"I noticed that's true of my hometown," adds Zhong Wei. "Children have learned to read and count at my old primary school since the mid-20th century. But now the buildings are really old. I hear they're going to build a new school there." Zhong Wei thinks such developments are good, and he also knows that his hometown cannot always stay the same.
According to Zhong Wei, however, some things will never change. "In my hometown, there was a big old tree opposite the school. It is still there and has become quite a symbol of the place. Most of the children in my time liked to play together under that big tree, especially during the summer holidays. It was such a happy childhood. Our hometown has left many soft and sweet memories in our hearts.

2. How often may these people visit their hometown?

4. Are there any changes in the countryside? If so, what are they?
