That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.

To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress.

I remember very clearly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.

After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Sever years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.

As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中风).

Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with-just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU (重症监护室) and finally out of hospital.

One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”

The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. But it is also a place where we pay little attention to whether or not our language ability is becoming poorer.

According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills have weakened. They don’t use difficult rhetorical technique (修辞手法) as often anymore. It is believed that digital technology and Internet emojis (表情符号) have changed their communication habits.

For example, direct expression is the preferred way to communicate online. When one sees something funny, one will simply type “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji, Beijing Youth Daily reported. Also, “copy and paste (粘贴) ” culture is getting popular. People simply pick up expressions from the Internet without much thought. Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as “Whenever you disagree with each other, you ...”

Cai Xiaojia (not her real name), a teacher from Fuzhou, told China Youth Daily that words in general are being used less. For example, people can share photos online with little need for words to describe them.

If this trend (趋势) continues, it could influence our way of thinking, People’s Daily reported. When we use expressions without thinking, it means we have become too lazy to express our real feelings. If teenagers adopt casual (不正式的) methods of expression like emojis, they could lose the ability to use words properly.

To improve our language skills, experts suggest that we should try to think independently and develop our own language logic (逻辑).They also suggest that we should read more works of literature (文学). “Keep using different words to show your own feelings,” said Shen Xiaolong, a professor in the Chinese department at Fudan University.

31. What does the survey by China Youth Daily show?
A.About 76 percent of Chinese people are losing their language skills.
B.Over three quarters of young Chinese people think their language skills have weakened.
C.Rhetorical technique is becoming less important in the digital era (电子时代).
D.Young Chinese people don’t need to use words to describe photos they posted.
32. What do Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly tell us?
A.What people’s new communication habits are.
B.Which phrases are most popular on the Internet.
C.Why young people like using emojis.
D.Where young people learn new expressions.
33. If teenagers continue to use the direct expressions and emojis, people could become __________.
A.good at thinking creativelyB.unable to use words properly
C.less interested in talking with othersD.satisfied with their laziness
34. The underlined word “adopt” in Paragraph 6 means “__________”.
A.suggestB.useC.needD.describe
35. What can we do to improve our language skills?
A.Think like an adult.
B.Stop using emojis.
C.Read works of literature
D.Use difficult language.

It seems like technology is everywhere. Computers and smart phones are at the center of almost everything we do. They constantly (持续地) require our attention. We text our friends with them during the day, sleep with them by our beds and check our messages as soon as we wake up.

In the future we will use calm technology which was first developed by scientist Mark Weiser in the 1970s.In his opinion, calm technology works quietly but constantly. We know it is there, but we don’t pay much attention to it. According to Mark, the best technology should be invisible (隐形的) and let you live your life.

We already use many different types of calm technology in our everyday life. Do you have a smoke alarm in your house? That smoke alarm is always there, checking the air for smoke and quietly keeping you safe. It only reminds you it’s there when you’ve burnt your bread! Or there may be lights in your home or school. When somebody passes in front of their sensor (传感器), the lights turn on. You don’t think about this type of technology until you see the light go on.

In the future, our houses will use calm technology to open the door for us. Or even to choose the best music for our mood. The minute we walk through the door, our house will respond by turning on the lights and music, and perhaps even starting to prepare our dinner!

There are a number of ways to help improve your memory, so you shouldn’t feel sad.

My     41    (one) advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it regularly. You might want to go     42     the material two days after you learn it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month you will find that you can remember the material     43    (easy).

My second advice is to use a colored pen to highlight the important parts on your book. This will help you in two     44    (way). On the one hand, it will help you focus on the most important parts     45     you learn the knowledge. It is always easier to remember only the key point. On     46     other hand, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the colored parts will show you the most important things immediately.     47     this way, you don’t have to go over all the material again.

Another piece of advice is to go over all the information in     48    (you) mind right before you go to sleep. Another good time for     49    (memorize) information is in the morning because you have just     50     (rest) and your brain is fresh and clear. So it’s easy to memorize the important information in the morning.
