Sometimes you can be surprised by a kind and caring person that you don’t even know.
As my birthday was last week, my daughter, granddaughter and neighbor went with me to the Golden Corral restaurant for my birthday. When I walked up to the buffet counter(自助餐台), a nice gentleman wearing a T-shirt was also filling his plate and we had a short friendly conversation.
I walked back to my table, and shortly after that this nice gentleman seated himself at his table, which was just across from ours. I was surprised to hear my birthday being announced over the loudspeaker in the building. A little while later, this gentleman left the restaurant, and a waitress came up and asked me if I had seen this man at the next table. I said that I had, and she said, “He wants you to have this,” and handed me a $25 gift certificate to the restaurant! (A gift certificate is a special piece of money when it is exchanged for goods in a shop.)
That was a complete surprise for me, as I had never experienced that before, and didn’t even know that kind gentleman’s name. I don’t know of any other way to express my thanks to him, except to write a letter to the editors of our local newspaper and hopefully, someone-perhaps him-will read it and know how much I appreciate(感激)his kindness and friendliness. It is something that won’t be forgotten.
The next time I go to Golden Corral to enjoy their buffet and use the gift card, I hope to see him again so I can tell him, “Thank you, ” from the bottom of my heart!

Hunting its food in the open sea, the shark has three senses on which it mainly depends. These are smell, sight, and the vibration (震动) of the water-the shark’s “hearing”. Of course, the sense of smell is usually thought to be the most important. Although the shark’s brain is small for the size of its body (some people believe the shark’s brain does not even record the sense of pain), a very large part of the brain is given to the sense of smell. Some scientists refer to the shark as a “swimming nose”.
The shark’s nostrils(鼻孔)are on the underside of its nose, just ahead of the mouth. But they have no connection with the mouth. In fact, they have nothing to do with breathing. They are for smelling only, and they do an excellent job. Each nostril is a kind of cup filled with olfactory cells(嗅觉细胞), the cells that sense smell. As the shark moves, or even when it lays still, water flows in and out of each nostril, often bathing the olfactory cells.
The shark has another tool for finding its food-its eyes. For a long while it was believed that the shark’s eyesight was very poor. But actually the shark sees better than most people had believed. In fact, it is unusually sensitive to light. And its eyes have a special addition, one it shares with cats and some other night animals-a mirror-like layer(层)in the back of the eye.
Light comes through the eye and is reflected back again. In this way the part of the eye sensitive to light is stimulated(刺激)twice.
38. What does the word “hearing” in Paragraph 1 really mean?A.Sharks can sense other animals around them. | B.Sharks have ears that are turned outward. |

C.How nostrils help sharks hunt. | D.Connections between sharks’ eyes and cats’ eyes. |
For many, this term is their final term at the University of Utah. There are several things those students will undoubtedly miss. I’ll be spending a term in Florida working in a hospital to get some practical training, so I won’t be in Utah for a few months. I’ m already worried about the change and I’m taking time to enjoy everything I will miss.
The first thing I’m going to miss about Utah is the sunsets. On a clear day, Utah has colorful sunsets. It’s possibly caused by pollution, but no matter what, they’re interesting and special. The second thing I’m going to miss is the dryness of the state. From what I know of Florida, it is like always walking through a cloud of thin fog. Winter in Florida is like summer in Utah, but with more rain.
I’m actually going to miss driving. In Florida, I’ll only be taking the bus. It’s going to be a short distance, and I won’t think about how fast I go or when I should turn. During my long journeys every day in Utah, I listened to audiobooks(有声读物), and they helped me with my homework and were more enjoyable than the radio or the sounds of traffic. In a word, I could always gain a lot while driving.
Lastly, I’m also going to miss the Marriott Library. It doesn’t matter where I sit; in the library, I can have great fun learning there. Having $ 2 snacks just a couple of meters away from me, a service that can print quickly without technical difficulties and the atmosphere(氛围)of hundreds of other students around me who are also working hard and getting their homework done, make the library the best place for studying. And I mustn’t forget to mention the books. I never thought a school library famous for research would have all I need to enjoy George R. R. Martin’s world of ice and fire, but it does.
42. Why is the author leaving for Florida?A.To go for a holiday. | B.To go to university. | C.To have a job interview. | D.To get practical experience. |
A.The author likes the sunsets in Utah. | B.The author thinks it is too dry in Utah. |
C.The author hates the pollution in Utah. | D.The author wishes for more cloudy days in Utah. |
A.It makes him lonely. | B.It is highly productive. |
C.It takes too much time. | D.It has made him a careful man. |
A.It lies near the dining hall. | B.It has a pleasant learning environment. |
C.It is less crowded than other libraries. | D.It is famous for its collection of novels. |
