“I am very excited that I have received much attention,” said Zhang. “My biggest dream is to become a basketball player. With the encouragement from all these people, I’ll do better and better.”

People always take action to fight against food waste, but one young man is making a big difference with technology.

Liu Jichen, 23, is a student from Tsinghua University. In 2017, Liu found that a restaurant near his school would give cards to the people who come for dinner if they finished off their food, and those people could get small gifts after they had collected a certain number of cards. At that time, he thought that technological innovation(创新) is a good way to reduce food waste.

Soon he set up a team of 20 members to work on the project to reduce food waste at the end of 2017. After working out many difficulties, a WeChat mini-program was put into operation on October 16, 2018, World Food Day. The mini-program is called “Clear Your Plate”. After a meal, users can open the mini-program and take a picture of their empty plates. Once the picture is recognized(识别) by the AI, they can collect points and use them to buy gifts for themselves or to give away to the poor.

“We hope our efforts can be a new start among the young by encouraging them to develop a good habit when they are eating. We hope that everyone can take action against food waste,” Liu said.
