We live in a society that is producing and using electronics(电子产品) all the time. What happy to your computers, MP3 players and cell phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?
Most people just throw them away. In 2016, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste,电子垃圾) and only recycled 6.5 million tons, according to the United Nations last month. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China ranked second, with 6 million tons.
(A)It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we treat it.
To help reduce e-waste, the first thing we can do is to buy longer lasting electronic equipment. If you have unwanted electronic such as aging toys or cell phones, find a new home for them by giving them to charities. (B)You can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs. Apple, for example, now offers people a discount(折扣) in China if they hand in their used devices when buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell (C)them at lower prices.
1. 根据短文内容回答问题。Which country produced most e-waste in 2016?
2. 将(A)处画线句子翻译成汉语。
3. 将(B)处画线句子进行同义句转换。(每空一词)

Scientists have learned about Venus for a long time. First they looked at Venus through telescopes (望远镜). But scientists could not see Venus well because of thick clouds on Venus. So they made guesses about it.
For a long time, scientists thought that Venus had water and plants. They thought Venus might have animals too. But they didn’t know for sure.
Then scientists found a way to learn more about Venus. In the 1960s, they began sending probes (航天探测器) to Venus. The probes flew through the thick clouds. They took pictures of Venus up close. They found out many things too. The probes sent the pictures and things they found out back to the scientists.
The scientists learned a lot from the probes. First they learned that most of their guesses were not right. And they learned that Venus is very hot.
After that, scientists knew they could not send people to Venus. But they still wanted to know more about it. So they sent new probes. These new probes took great pictures of the planet. The pictures showed that Venus has plains and mountains! And in some ways, Venus looks like the earth.

Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋). Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased, however, some of the ice has begun to disappear. Scientists have discovered huge waves(海浪) in the arctic waters.
The waves were discovered by accident in May, 2010. Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.
On May 2, the ship traveled east and stopped next to a large chunk of ice around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen. Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.
“We were ready to go but when I went out, I discovered many cracks(裂缝) around,” he remembers.
He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went, he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones. Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.
Within an hour, Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship’s navigation system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour: Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.
The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waves or depend on sea ice to protect them. Wildlife like polar bears and walruses that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger.
Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in these icy waters. As waves break up ice, the seas will become more open, and the waves will get even stronger. There are stormy times ahead.
1. When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the arctic waters?2. Why did Marchenko and his students set out on the trip?
3. Would you like to be a member of Marchenko’s team? If you want to take part, what will you do next?
Wilderness survival skills (野外生存技能) were necessary in the past, but now, people hardly use them. Teachers at the Deep Green Bush School in New Zealand think this might not be right. What if one day people have to live a primitive (原始的) life? So, the school hardly teaches reading, writing or math classes. Instead (反而), students go out to learn how to find food, cook and learn about plants and animals.
Teachers and students at the school believe that if you can survive in the wild, you can survive anywhere. But are these wilderness survival skills really important? After all, we now live in a modern (现代的) world.
In today’s world, people need to learn many other skills to be successful, such as how to find a job, drive a car or speak a foreign language. It seems that most of us don’t learn survival skills because we don’t need them anymore.
In fact, survival skills change along with time and the development of society (社会发展). And it’s useful for people to have many skills. So why not learn some wilderness survival skills? At least, you will learn more about nature and yourself.
1. What does the school will give up teaching, if people have to get used to the life before?2. What skills do people hardly use now?
3. Do teachers at the school think people with wilderness survival skills can survive anywhere?
4. Why do people learn many other skills in the modern world?
5. What does the writer think of wilderness survival skills?
Cotton is cool, wool is warm. They’re practical. But silk? Silk is soft, it is smooth, it is expensive. It is also possible the most expensive material in the world. But it is strong as well-a thread (线) of silk is stronger than steel.
I wanted to discover more about this mysterious material, so I went to China. China is where the secret of silk was first discovered more than 4,000 years ago, and it is still the biggest producer of silk in the world.
So, how to make silk? The first problem is that the silkworm only eats leaves from the mulberry (桑树) tree. “It is easier to prepare food for a human than a silkworm,” says Toshio Ito, a Japanese silkworm expert.
Silkworms only live for about 28 days, but at that time they increase in weight 10,000 times. Then, they make a cocoon (蚕茧). After that, people put the cocoons into hot water to make them soft. Next, they pull the fibers (纤维) from the cocoon and spin (纺纱) them to make silk thread. Finally, they make the thread into cloth.
But why is silk so expensive? Well, it takes 110 cocoons to make a tie, 630 cocoons to make a blouse, and 3,000 cocoons to make a dress. That’s many hours of hard work. But many people believe silk’s beauty is worth it.

When we look up at the night sky, we see the twinkling stars. But what we don’t see is the space junk (垃圾) floating up the space. Now there may be as many as 170 million pieces of space junk in Earth’s orbit (轨道). If they hit our satellites or spaceships, they can destroy them and make them stop working.
Facing the big danger by space junk, scientists are working hard on its cleanup although it’s really a tough job and takes a long time. The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to use a “junk truck”, ClearSpace-1, in 2025. It’s a spaceship that can find its target and move close to it, then catch it with its four “arms”. This is not going to be an easy job because even the smallest junk circles Earth as fast as 8 kilometers a second. Once it catches the junk, the spaceship will carry it back to Earth. This is because the junk will burn up when traveling through the atmosphere (大气层), so there won’t be much left when it reaches Earth. However, the spaceship itself will burn up at the same time.
Since the original cleanup plan will cause huge loss, scientists are trying to work out other plans. One new plan is to send a spaceship carrying special tools, which are used to shoot to stick into the space junk, moving it away from the orbit and throwing it into Earth’s atmosphere.
Space junk is a huge threat which endangers our satellites or spaceships, but why haven’t space agencies around the world done anything yet? One reason is the cost. To catch one piece of space junk larger than 10cm wide would cost between $4,000 and $60,000 (about 30,000 to 436,000 yuan) per kilogram.
With space traffic increasing, all nations have to work together to find out more ways to reduce space junk, or there will be more in-space accidents.

【推荐1】Learning a Foreign Language
There are many aspects (方面) to language learning, such as how words are said, which words are chosen and what forms of words are used. All of these aspects together can make learning a foreign language difficult. But some advice might make learning a new language easier and more fun.
Don’t worry too much about pronouncing words the wrong way.
Pronunciation is important, of course. It helps listeners to understand what someone says more clearly. But the most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it. As for learning any new skill, practice makes perfect. And most of the time, the native (本地的) speaker is glad to help improve the pronunciation of the words.
Don’t be afraid to guess the meaning of what someone says.
There are tens of thousands of words in English. It is impossible to know all of them. You may use context (上下文) and body language to guess what others say. For example, when a person says “Hola” and waves his hand, one might guess that the person is giving a greeting. Whether it means “Hello” or “Good morning”, it is not necessarily important at that moment to know the exact meaning.
Don’t give up.
Learning a new language or skill always takes time. Many will give up learning because it is too hard or boring. Some may think that other people will make fun of them for making mistakes. But it’s OK to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, after all. Don’t lose hope and keep trying.
In the end, learning a new language can be difficult, but remember that it can give great advantages. Learning a language doesn’t just mean the ability to speak in that different language. Don’t forget that learning a language can also include making new friends and experiencing new cultures!
1. What is the most important step in learning a new language?2. How do you guess the meaning of what someone says?
3. Why is it OK to make mistakes when learning a new language?
4. Is learning a foreign language important? Why or why not?

Travel in a green way.
Now more Chinese people have cars of their own. It has brought us a lot of benefits but has created some serious problems as well. So we’d better do more walking, cycling and less driving. By doing so, can we save energy and reduce pollution.
Cut down white pollution.
We should reduce the use of plastic bags. When we go to the supermarket, bring our own shopping bags.
Save water.
We are supposed to turn off the shower when we’re washing our hair. Water the plants with the water that washes rice.
Now is the time that we should take up our responsibility to protect our environment from being polluted. Let’s join our hands and take action immediately.

These days when you go on vacation, you spend most of your money just getting there. Travel is expensive, but don't stay at home only because you are short of money! Here is some advice:
*Travel during off-season if possible. Flights and hotels are very cheaper when tourism is low.
*Choose a hotel that's a little farther from popular attractions. If you're staying several days, check out prices on vacation homes — it can end up being cheaper than a hotel.
*Take public traffic, such as buses or subway, instead of taking a taxi.
*Plan your meals, and eat like locals. Don't waste money at expensive hotel restaurants or fast-food chains. Depending on where you stay, it may be cheaper to make food on your own.
*Check online for special discount(折扣) —if you're a student, the old or the parents traveling with children, you could get discounts! A little research could save you a lot of money.
Whether you're backpacking alone or going on a family vacation, your trip doesn't have to break the bank. The key is to plan ahead and write down what you spend. Then put the money you save toward your next trip!
