There was an old man who used to sleep on the sidewalk of the Fifth Street Post Office. I could smell him before I came close. He wore dirty clothes and his mouth was nearly toothless. I seldom saw him talk with others. If he was not asleep, he talked to himself. I always felt sorry for him. What a poor old man! He must be hopeless and hungry.
One Thanksgiving, we had lots of food left over. I thought about the old man. He might be still hungry, so I packed the food up and drove over to the Fifth Street. It was a cold night. There was hardly anyone out. But I knew he would stay at the same place and I would find him easily. There he was, sitting against a fence(栅栏)near the post office. He was dressed as he always was. I drove my car over to him, rolled down the window and said, "I’ve brought you some food. Would you like some turkey and apple pie?”
However, the old man didn't seem to be very excited about this. He looked at me and said quite clearly, "Oh, thank you very much, but someone has given me food earlier and I'm quite full now. Why don't you take it to someone else who needs it?’
His words were clear and his manners were good. Soon he put his head down into his arms again. I was the only person who didn't know what to say. An old man who was clearly down on his luck still thought about others. Why don't more of us do that?

Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smart phones. Smart phones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smart phones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness since smart phones were introduced there in 1997.
Staring at smart phones for a long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smart phones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma.
While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smart phone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 continues away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

We live in a society that is producing and using electronics(电子产品) all the time. What happy to your computers, MP3 players and cell phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?
Most people just throw them away. In 2016, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste,电子垃圾) and only recycled 6.5 million tons, according to the United Nations last month. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China ranked second, with 6 million tons.
(A)It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we treat it.
To help reduce e-waste, the first thing we can do is to buy longer lasting electronic equipment. If you have unwanted electronic such as aging toys or cell phones, find a new home for them by giving them to charities. (B)You can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs. Apple, for example, now offers people a discount(折扣) in China if they hand in their used devices when buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell (C)them at lower prices.
