Margaret Howe, an experiment (试验) helper, would live day and night with Peter, a dolphin. And they would eat, bathe (洗澡), sleep and play together from Sunday to Friday, with only Saturdays off for Margaret. She lived her life in swimming clothes—with a coat on colder evenings—and cut her hair short so that she could get on with Peter more easily.
After a few days, Peter was becoming more and more interested in winning her attention. He threw a ball against her shower towel to get her to play. As time went by, he only wanted to play ball with her and not on his own.
The problem was that, just at the time Peter and Margaret began to get on well just as two best friends, the experiment ended and the lab was closed. After a few weeks, Margaret received the sad news that Peter had killed himself by refusing to breathe, and sinking to the bottom of his pool.
Dolphins may not speak English—but, just like humans, they know all about broken hearts.

But what does “mayday” mean? “Mayday” is an internationally recognized distress call (求救信号), mostly used by pilots and boat captains. The signal can be sent out on any channel by radio communication.
This emergency call first started in the 1920s. At that time, the distress call was “SOS” and was usually used by navy captains. The message was sent in Morse code (电码) by telegraph. In Morse code, “SOS” is three dots, three dashes (线) and three dots. The signal was unmistakable. However, aircraft pilots use radio calls, so sending out “SOS” could be misheard as other letters, such as “F”.
Frederick Stanley Mockford, a radio officer at Croydon Airport in London, was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress. Because of the amount of flights that flew between Croydon and Paris, he chose mayday, as it sounds similar to the French word “m’ aider”, which means “help me”.
Facing a threatening situation, pilots have to repeat the signal three times in case of radio interference (干扰) or loud background noise. If the pilots don’t get a reply within two minutes, they should repeat it. Once they receive a reply, more information, including the code of the flight, their situation and the number of people on board should be reported. Sometimes pilots are directed to a nearby airport or location where they can make an emergency landing. While mayday signals indicate a life-threatening situation, they do not always end in death.
Despite (尽管) dangers, air travel is still the safest means of transport.

If you share a photo on Weibo, others will know you are in Shanghai. Chinese social media platforms now display their users’ locations. All this information is based on our IP addresses. So, what exactly is an IP address? Can others accurately locate us through our IP addresses?
You may compare your IP address to your home address. Your friends can find your home with your home address. Similarly, with your IP address, other devices(设备) can “find” your device. Without your IP address, Bilibili wouldn’t know where to send that cute cat video you just clicked on.
But your IP address doesn’t directly give away your name, phone number or home address. It only shows your general location. However, risks still exist.
Everything you do online is being monitored, whether by social media platforms or your browser(浏览器). This data is often linked to your IP address. It is stored on servers(服务器) across the world. Nobody can know your online activities just by having your IP address. However, there are “bad guys” out there. Cybercriminals(网络罪犯) can steal your information by hacking(非法侵入) into certain servers. Companies get hacked every day, so the chance of this happening is never zero.
Skilled hackers can also reach your device by knowing your IP address. This is especially true if you are connected to public Wi-Fi networks. The hackers can then install malware on your devices. These pieces of software can steal your information without you knowing about it.
If you are worried about what happens if someone gets your IP address, you may consider changing your online habits. For example, do not share personal information on social media. Regularly changing your IP address can also make it harder for anyone to steal your information. You can do so by turning off your router(路由器) for a minute and then turning it on again.

B.David always posts his personal information on Bilibili. |
C.Tom always uses public Wi-Fi when he is out. |

B.To tell us how to protect personal information. |
C.To tell us what IP address is. |
D.To tell us what hackers do. |

“Come to the kitchen, young lady,” Mom firmly (坚定地) said to Maria in her best mother tone (语气) of voice.
Maria walked into the kitchen and shouted, “I can’t stand living with Felicia another minute. I don’t ever want to talk to her again!”
Mom called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.”
While Felicia was on her way, Mom put two chairs opposite each other but very close together.
“Maria, you sit here and Felicia you sit there.” The girls sat face to face, with their knees almost touching. “Now you look each other in the eye for five minutes,” Mom ordered.
At first the girls moved their bodies from side to side. Mom said firmly, “You must stay staring at each other for five minutes. Each minute you don’t make eye contact (眼神交流) means another minute sitting in the chairs. ” They both wanted out, so they had to sit there and look at each other.
Felicia looked at Maria’s pouting (噘嘴的) face while Maria looked at Felicia’s angry face. They each thought the other one looked ridiculous (可笑的). In fact, they were being ridiculous to fight and be mad at each other over nothing.

Thanks to an online activity and a stranger with a strong sense of romance and a strong will, an old box full of 70-year-old love letters was returned to its very first owner.
Twenty years ago, a woman named Cherry Vallance got the letters from her neighbor who found them in the top floor of his house and wanted to throw them away. Luckily, they ended up in Cherry’s house where they were once again forgotten until her daughter, Kim Rowe, discovered them again.
The letters were from 1948 and 1949 and were about the first romance between Norma Hall in Kent, England and Bob Beasley, a soldier fighting overseas. That was the only information she had, but Kim heard a lot of moving stories about people and things being found through Facebook years later. She posted the story online.
The Internet found Norma Beasley living in Lincoln, England. She was so surprised to find that her loved love letters still lived in the world, and that they were in the same old box.
The moment makes people smile and also full of tears, though. Norma says she hasn’t looked at the letters yet. Bob passed away late last year, and she is still not ready to face the letters alone.
