Public schools across the country have been on a health look since 2010. Thanks to a new law, students said goodbye to unhealthy food and hello to better eating habits in school. They also have been exercising more during the school day.
It's up to schools to decide how they follow the law. Many places require schools to provide healthy choices for lunch. In Tennessee, most schools removed(移除)sugary snacks and soft drinks from vending machines(自动贩卖机). Instead of them, there are more nutritious(有营养的)choices, such as granola bars, nuts, water, and juice.
In Florida, Missouri, and Texas, some schools have rules that ban(禁止)desserts such as cupcakes and lollipops from parties. Instead, school officials encourage teachers and parents to provide more nutritious food.
To get kids to exercise more, the northwestern Minnesota district of Perham Dent added more physical activity to the school day. Many schools also make sure that kids have break every day.
The goals of the law are to improve good health and to reduce obesity(肥胖). Obesity is the condition of being very overweight. Being obese can lead to serious health problems later in life. Experts say the number of children aged 6-11 years old who were obese more than doubled from 1980 to 2012, and the number of obese young people aged 12-19 years old have increased 4 times in the same time period.
“We know that adults who are very overweight get sick more often and lose time at work.” Julia Lear, the director of the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, told WR News. “The best thing to do is to get kids in the habit of getting lots of exercise and eating healthy meals.”

Because of busy work, ordering simple and quick meals online is common for many young people in China. Zhang Yuan, a 30-year-old woman from Dalian, was one of them. She usually ate in the office and seldom cooked at home. But during the NCP outbreak, staying at home for a long time has changed her eating habit. Now, she can cook for herself. “Cooking by myself sometimes needs more time, but it helps me have a healthy diet,” Zhang told China Daily.
Instead of eating at fast food chains (连锁店) or restaurants, cooking at home has become a new trend. “Some people even regard sharing food videos on their WeChat as a special way to say hello to each other when face-to-face dinner is not possible,” noted China Daily.
In addition to cooking at home, many people also eat separately and change the habit of using serving chopsticks and spoons.
In China, eating together has been a kind of habit for centuries. For Chinese people, eating one’s own dish would be considered rude. They usually share several dishes and sometimes share utensils (餐具) to show their respect and closeness. Though it seems polite, it’s really risky (有风险的). According to World Health Organization, foodbome (食物传播的) diseases are quite common, and saliva (唾液) is one of the most common ways for them to spread. So many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, have already called on people to order separate meals.
Though these habits formed the pandemic (大流行), they are good for people’s health and safety. So we should keep them from now on.

The study found that people between the ages of 40 and 79 who took 9,826 steps per day were 50% less likely to develop dementia within seven years. Furthermore, people who walked with “purpose”-—at a pace over 40 steps a minute—were able to cut their risk of dementia by 57% with just 6,315 steps a day. “It is a brisk(轻快的) walking activity, like a power walk,” said Borja Del Pozo Cruz, a researcher in health sciences for University of Cadiz in Spain.
The study showed even people who walked 3,800 steps a day at any speed cut their risk of dementia by 25%. “That would be enough, at first, for inactive people,” said Cruz in an email. “In fact, it is a message that doctors could use to make very inactive older adults move—3,800 steps is very doable for many, even those that are less fit,” he added. “Perhaps, more active and fitter people should aim for 10,000, where we see the greatest effects.”
But there was an even more interesting result coming out of the study: The largest reduction in dementia risk—62%—was achieved by people who walked at a very brisk speed of 112 steps per minute for 30 minutes a day. Earlier research described 100 steps a minute as a “brisk” level of intensity(强度) in their article Is 112 the New 10,000. Dr. Okonkwo and Dr. Planalp, two researchers on dementia, argued that 112 seemed easier to achieve than 10,000 steps a day, and people looking to reduce their dementia risk focus on their walking speed over their walked distance.
The researchers agree this is a very interesting finding, and they note that intensity of stepping matters more than how far people usually walk if they want to stay smart after aging. Technology could be used to follow not only number of steps but also speed. These types of numbers can also be put in common watches, but more research is needed.

Books offer a great wealth (财富) of learning and are at a cheaper price than taking a course (课程). Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people are.
Everything requires reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the notes on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone may not understand them and become very sick.
Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of them.
Some people say that reading is a waste of time and we can do better things with our time. Even if we don’t read books, we still read every day and reading books can strengthen our abilities (能力). Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our free time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives, no matter how old you are. So I think people should read books.
