My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said," Get up. You're going with me to cut the grass in the garden."
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business(生意) made me feel proud and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got for my work that day.
One day, my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. "Take away these leaves!" said seriously, "and don't make me have to tell you to do it again." The message was clear. Today I value it, which my father gave to me that day. It will always be helpful to impress (给……留下印象)the person you are working for.
After two years, I left home and went to another town to start my new life .Luckily for me, I quickly found a job to wash dishes in a restaurant. Every morning, I set off early, always with the same strong wish I got long long ago. I felt like I was old enough to be independent and make a living by myself.
In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn't matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and it better and better .One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. "If you only think about hard work and money, ▲ ”, I answered.
In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I've learned much. I've learned something that helps me in my next job.

【推荐2】One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face. He would then fall to the grass, get up, without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.
At that moment, I thought to myself, “Why aren’t most adults this way?” Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don’t even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed (尴尬的) that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they’re not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure (失败).
However, with kids, when they fall down, they don’t consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected “falling down” with the word “failure”. What’s more, they probably think to themselves that it’s quite okay to fall down and that it’s not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes, so they remain energetic.
I was deeply impressed by the boy’s persistence (坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.

He put them in two cages(笼子),feeding them carefully and watching their living habits every day. A year later, to his surprise, the big monkey died with no reason. In order to research, he had another brought from Brazil. This one was bigger than the dead one, but it died in less than half a year. In order to make sure of the reason, he dissected(解剖)their bodies, but could not find out the reason of death from the beginning to the end.
After that, he returned to Amazon and made research about those monkeys there. It showed that every big and strong monkey has quite good relationships with others. When other monkeys get food, they always can share a piece. But this kind of monkeys are seldom able to keep their cool. They will jump here and there when free, playing with each other. However, once they have been caught, few can live for a year. While those monkeys who are good at staying in the sunlight and refreshing(使......恢复) their spirit by closing their eyes are different because they don’t get on well with others, few of those monkeys can share the others’ food. This kind of monkeys grows smaller and weaker; however, they can live longer after they are caught.
The zoologist later concluded(做结论) that , for monkeys, the life short of communications is a defect( 缺失)while the life short of being alone is a disaster(灾难).
Such is the world of monkeys. Isn’t it the same in the human world?

Porter attended a school taught by his aunt and then worked in his uncle's drugstore. The working experience helped him a lot. He saw the humour in everyday life, and made notes of all the colourful characters he met, which became the fodder (素材) for his future stories. In 1882 he went to Texas, and began writing at about the time of his marriage to Athol Estes in 1887, and in 1894 he started a humorous weekly, The Rolling Stone.
In 1902 Porter arrived in New York. He produced a story a week for the New York World, writing also for magazines. His first book, Cabbages and Kings (1904), showed fantastic characters against exotic backgrounds. Then a number of his stories came out. Among them, The Gift of the Magi was popular. The story was about James and Della, a young couple who were poor but still tried to give each other a nice gift on Christmas Eve.
In the following years came The Voice of the City (1908), The Gentle Grafter (1908), Roads of Destiny (1909), Options (1909), and Whirligigs (1910). Whirligigs contains perhaps Porter's funniest story, The Ransom of Red Chief. These stories were printed under another name, his favourite being “O. Henry”.

Scientists know that parts of the brain become smaller in size with age. But in super-agers that goes much slower. In her recent study, Emily Rogalski, a neuroscientist (神经科学家), showed that super-agers have young brains. The area of the brain for attention and memory was shown to be thicker in super-agers. “When we look at a super-ager’s brain, we see that it looks more like a 50-year-old brain than an 80-year-old one.”
Scientists say super-agers have several things in common, including an active lifestyle. Many travel and play sports. They are often big readers. And they usually have healthy relationships and spend time with friends. “Growing old,” she adds, “does not have to be depressing and sad. Perhaps, if we expect a little better from ourselves, we will understand that not all aging makes us doom and gloom (愁闷).” Rogalski jokingly said that super-agers do not grow on trees — meaning they are special and few. She says she wants to find out why a super-ager’s mind is working so well and not aging as quickly as most.
The science behind super-aging is a new, but growing field. Scientists in the research offer this advice as we age: Stay active. Learn new things. Challenge yourself. Develop healthy relationships.

In China, a thumb-up sign is used to praise someone for being “good”, “great” and “smart”. In America, a thumb-up sign means “It’s good” or “It’s OK” while a thumb-down sign means the opposite (相反的). But in some countries, there are other meanings. For example, in Japan, that also means “man”, “your father” and “the highest”. In South Korea, it also means “the chief”, “one’s own father”, “minister” and “captain”. In Australia, the United States, Mexico and other countries, it means “the fate of prayer (祈祷的命运)”. As for French people and Indians, this gesture can be used when asking for a ride.
Point with your forefinger (食指). It is very impolite in Europe and America. British and American people make a circle with the thumb and forefinger and the other three fingers keep straight, which means “Excellent”.
Put out your forefinger. In the United States, it’s used to ask someone to wait; French people ask for an answer by using this gesture; In Myanmar, it means “please”; In Singapore, it shows something or someone is the most important.
Hold out your forefinger and middle finger and make the V word. “V” is the first letter of victory (胜利), so it means “victory” in Britain, France and other countries. But in Serbia, the gesture stands for “heroism” and in the Netherlands, it stands for “freedom”.
Besides, the “OK” sign means “money” in Japan while it means bad behavior in Latin America.
1. What does the underlined word “that” refer to?A.The thumb-down sign. | B.The thumb-up sign. |
