You probably see a lot of things made of plastic, like bottles and bags, every day. What happens when that plastic gets thrown away? Scientists say much of it ends up in oceans and causes problems for creatures(生物)like fish and birds.

“Plastic puts ocean creatures in danger," says Allison Schutes of the Ocean Conservancy. That's a group that works to protect the world's oceans.

A recent study shows that each minute, enough plastic reaches the ocean to fill up one garbage truck! That same study predicts that by the year 2050, our oceans will have more plastic than fish.

All that plastic is bad news for ocean life. Some ocean creatures die when they get tangled(使缠结)in pieces of plastic. Others accidentally eat it and die, too.

Most scientists say taking out all the plastic that's already in the ocean would be impossible. Instead, they say the best way is to prevent more plastic from getting there.

Many groups are already taking action. They organize cleanups on beaches to pick up litter before it reaches the ocean., volunteers from the Ocean Conservancy collected more than 16 million pounds of it last year!

Experts also encourage people to use less plastic. Many cities and towns in America have banned plastic shopping bags. Experts also suggest that people drink out of reusable bottles and try reusable shopping bags.

“These seem like small things," says Schutes, "but they can help make a big difference.”

Snow Leopard Poster Competition!

This spring, two beautiful snow leopards (雪豹) will be welcomed into their specially designed new home at Chester Zoo—and guess what? Your artwork could be on display there with them.

Snow leopards in the wild are in trouble. One of the biggest threats that will affect them is climate change. Sadly, the snowy Himalayan mountains, where snow leopards live, are warming at three times the global average. But Chester Zoo wants to give these snow leopards a brighter future. Right now, they’re busy recreating the big cats’ mountainous home at the zoo.

The Competition

We want you to create an amazing snow leopard poster that encourages people to take action on climate change! Draw a snow leopard and choose one of the pledges below to add to your poster.

The Pledges
There is something we can keep telling ourselves to help fight climate change. Which will you choose to include on your poster?
REDUCE FOOD WASTE
Make a recipe with leftover ingredients.
WALK OR CYCLE
Leave the car at home on short journeys.
AVOID FLYING
Find a different type of transport next time you plan to take a flight.
Poster Design Tips!

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了人类活动正在改变地球上海洋的声音,海洋和其他水域声音的变化影响了许多海洋动物。

【推荐2】Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of our planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of oceans and seas. Scientists say these changes may have an effect on many sea animals—from very small fish to huge whales.

Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is a better way to sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive.

However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration and other noisy human activities. For many sea animals, their efforts to communicate are being masked by sounds that humans have made. Experts explain the term masking, which happens when one or more noises in the water block sound that is important to an ocean animal’s life.

Experts say that effects of noise on sea animals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune (免疫) system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels of stress because of noise. Also, the overall number of sea animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.

When people think of threats (威胁) facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics and overfishing. But noise pollution is another necessary thing we need to consider. When it comes to something humans can do for the ocean, we need to think about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can reduce or turn off sound at once. It’s not like plastics or climate change, which are much harder to undo (消除).

1. Why is sound important for ocean animals?
A.They use it avoid hunters.B.They use it to sing and dance.
C.They use it to see their environment.D.They use it to communicate with humans.
2. What does the underlined word “masked” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Shocked.B.Showed.C.Covered.D.Protected.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Swimming in the sea will also cause noise pollution.
B.Noise does more harm to sea animals than humans realize.
C.There is little that humans can do to reduce noise pollution.
D.Plastic pollution is the biggest threat facing oceans and seas.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Importance of Oceans and SeasB.The Biggest Threat to Oceans and Seas
C.The Communication Methods of Sea AnimalsD.The Effects of Noise Pollution on Sea Animals
