Last spring, Bill Lishman found sixteen young Canada Geese on his farm. They had lost their parents. Bill thought, “These young birds won’t know what to do in the autumn.”
Bill had a small plane and he decided to teach the birds to follow him. All through the summer, he went on short trips in his plane and the young geese flew after him.
When the cold weather arrived in autumn, Bill flew to Virginia in the U.S., 600 miles south of his home in Canada. The geese followed him all the way. Bill left the geese in Virginia and he returned home.

Leonardo da Vinci is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. He is still famous today because of the Mona Lisa and other well-known paintings. However, not many people know he was also an engineer and an inventor.
He was born on April 15th, 1452 in a northern Italian town. As early as 1466, he was working in a workshop. Then, in 1482, he moved to Milan. He moved to Florence (佛罗伦萨), another city in Italy in 1500, where he painted the famous Mona Lisa in 1503. Then, he returned to Milan between 1510 and 1515 after he had been working as an architect (建筑家) and engineer for the French king Louie XII.
Da Vinci was interested in science and art, and he was a pioneer in many areas. He drew plans and pictures and wrote about his many ideas in his diaries. Since he died on May 2nd, 1519, people have been learning from them. They included plans for an adding machine, bridges as well as drawings of musical instruments, flying machines and machines for war, such as guns.
Since many of da Vinci’s inventions were far ahead of their time, they were only tested hundreds of years later. Because he couldn’t test them, not all of da Vinci’s plans worked out as well as he wished. However, some of his ideas worked well. For example, one of his bridges was finally built 500 years after it was drawn and flying machines, such as helicopters, are very common now.
Some think da Vinci wanted to keep his ideas secret as he wrote his diary in code (密码). Others think it was just easier for him to write this way because he was left-handed. Either way, da Vinci’s diaries can only be read with a mirror because everything is written backwards. As it took some time to translate the diaries, they were published (出版) more than 150 years after his death.
