This story took place in a small village in England about 170 years ago. One day, a postman went to the village with some letters. ‘Here’s a letter for Miss Alice Brown,’ said the postman. Everyone turned to a girl of about 18. She was standing by the postman. ‘I’m Alice Brown,’ she said softly. The postman gave her the letter.

Alice looked at the envelope for a minute, and then handed it back to the postman.

‘I’m sorry I can’t take it,’ she said. ‘I don’t have enough money to pay the postage.’

The people nearby felt very sorry for the girl. Then a gentleman went up to the postman and paid the postage for Alice’s letter.

When the gentleman gave her the letter, she said with a smile, ‘Oh, thank you very much. This letter is from Tom, my boyfriend. He went to London to look for a job. I knew I couldn’t afford the postage; so I asked him to put a cross and a circle on the envelope if there was any good news. The cross tells me that he is well. The circle tells me that he has found a job. I’m very glad to see the cross and the circle on the envelope. I don’t need to open the letter because there’s nothing in it.’

The gentleman was Sir Rowland Hill. ‘I must do something about this,’ he said to himself. At last he got an idea.

‘The postage has to cost much less,’ he said. ‘What about a penny for a letter? The sender of the letter must pay the postage. He has to buy a stamp and put it on the envelope.’

‘Good idea!’ people said when they heard of this plan. So there appeared the first postage stamp in 1840. It was called ‘Penny Black’ and had a picture of the Queen on it.

【推荐2】A single mother of three children is celebrating a big event in her life: passing the bar exam.

Leshia Champs, 33, got her law degree at Texas Southern University in April. She also became popular online when she shared graduation photos of herself and her kids on Facebook, which spread quickly.

On Monday, she posted a letter, which said she had passed the exam on Facebook.

“People all counted me out, but God counted me in,” she wrote on Facebook. “And I succeeded!”

According to her letter, she will need to finish her licensing process in order to become a practicing lawyer in Texas.

Champs said in April that she had been dreaming of being a lawyer since a young age, even though she experienced countless hardships throughout her life. When she was young, her parents died in a car accident, and things just went from there. When she had just given birth to her third baby, her home was destroyed by a fire and her husband died of cancer.

“Things were really difficult after my husband's death I really didn't know what to do. I was a mother and I needed to raise my three children alone.”

But Champs said her success is thanks to her children, who often helped her as she was studying to get her degree.

“When I look at the pictures, I cry, I smile, and I'm very grateful,” Champs said. “I see a woman who at one time knew that it seemed impossible for her to succeed. Looking at that picture reminds me of the fact that I did make an impossible dream come true.
