Reading is an activity that people enjoy a lot in their free time. Some like reading newspapers, and others enjoy novels or comic books. I like reading about the lives of great people. This always gives me a lot of ideas on how to make my own life better.

Great people are remembered not because they were handsome or beautiful, but because they did not give up when their lives were difficult. They used every opportunity to change their lives and make the world better. One good example is Orville and Wilbur Wright, the two brothers who invented the airplane. The plane has made the world into a small village. Hard work, not good luck, is the reason why the Wright Brothers could invent this convenient machine and become remarkable people.     2     In fact, there is one library for every 1. 971 Czech people. The survey found four times as many, relative to population, as the average European country, and 10 times as many as United States, which has one for every 19, 583 people.

3     It’s a long story. In 1919, the government introduced a law to promote national education in their own language. Every place, from a big city to a tiny village, must have one library. And it worked.

The library law lasted for around 80 years, even in wartime. In 2001, to save money, the requirement was dropped.     4     Even today, Czech people visit libraries very often.

If you think these libraries are outdated, you are wrong.     5     Today, they are used as local people’s meeting places. They also hold art exhibitions(展览)and computer classes. But for most Czech people, no matter how the libraries change, their biggest function is still lending books.

A.However, the reading habit has been kept.
B.Why are there so many libraries?
C.There are more libraries than grammar schools.
D.They are doing what they can to stay close to people’s lives.
E.But people in one country are still keeping the habit of going to libraries
F.Libraries are everywhere in the country.

【推荐2】Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have photographs, films, radio and television. Why read a description of something when you can look at a photograph? Why read a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?
Photography was certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书) , for example, is always better when it has good illustrations. But we also need words to explain the photographs and drawings. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are found, their exact size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.
In the same way, a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things we do not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent feature film. Reading a novel requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also contains interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as human beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.

【推荐3】For many of us, there’s nothing better than burying our head in a good book. Whether it’s a crime story or a biography of someone’s amazing life, it’s good to read a book to break from the worries of everyday life and help us relax. Maybe that’s why some of them are actually regarded as a way to treat the sickness.

It’s known that reading is good for us. It can be educational, and, as some say, it can open the mind. A good novel can make us happy or sad, or make us cry as we feel pity for the characters. The power of books was realized a few years ago by the British Charity Reading Agency (BCRA), who came out a list of books that doctors could offer to patients, dealing with different diseases. It called this “bibliography (参考文献)” and it’s become so successful that it’s about to be used for educating children as well.

Professor Philip Davis studies the effects of books at Liverpool University and is the writer of a book called Reading for Life. He studies people in reading groups and found that reading has art values that has the best effect. He told the BBC that when reading something for pleasure, the brain begins to work from different parts, and it gets excited, and you can see the brain coming to life.

Of course, it’s easy in our smartphone generation to put away a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a book could be a simple way to help increase or keep our mind health. It’s thought they can help you set goals and find the keys. And they may allow you to see that embarrassing situation you’ve been worried about for weeks by standing in others’ shoes.

If you’re not an experienced reader it can be hard to know where to begin. If the Reading Agency book list doesn’t interest you, you could read book reviews, visit a library or bookshop or ask a friend. Once you’ve found the right text, you’ll lose yourself in it! And if you still love your technology, you could always use an e-reader.
