Hello, everyone! I’d like to tell you something about a famous scientist named Qian Xuesen. He was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on December 11, 1911. After he graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1934, he got a chance to study in USA. After he graduated, he became a teacher as well as a researcher who studied rockets and missile theories.
When he was 44, he returned to his motherland and the country’s space research was almost a blank. In 1956, he set up the first research institute of rockets and missiles. He made such important contributions to the missile and space programs that he was honored as “The Father of China’s Missiles”. The Chinese people are proud of him.
He passed away on October 31, 2009 at the age of 98, but all the Chinese will remember aim forever. His devotion to his country was expressed in his saying, “My career is in China, my success is in China and my destination is in China!” When someone said he could make much more money if he stayed in the United States, he laughed and said, “My family name is Qian, but I don’t like qian.” His spirit encourages us to love our country and devote ourselves to science.

I learned that we shouldn’t take ourselves seriously and that not everyone has to get “old and boring”. She is probably one of the coolest, funniest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. In boring moments, she never fails to tell one of her famous jokes. But when you need a shoulder to cry on, she is there to comfort you. She taught me that “Laughter is the best medicine”.
She never brings her phone, and she is okay with it. That hasn’t stopped her from shopping and talking with her family online.
From now on, I plan on accepting the fact that I don’t need to stay connected with social media(社交媒体)all the time. Even though I don’t use a mobile phone, I can also be better at communicating with people.
There are so many things you can learn from someone older and wiser than you. You don’t need to ask for advice, just slow down and enjoy the conversation. You’ll be surprised at how amazing it is.

Drawn to the ancient language, he went to China to study Chinese in the 1990s.
In 1994, Richard Sears decided to put the ancient Chinese characters online. Then, in 2002, he did it. That is the beginning of the Chinese Etymology(汉字字源)website. "My website did not get much attention for the next few years. Until one day in 2011, it suddenly got a lot of attention. I got a few thousand emails, and a few million visitors and people started calling me 'Uncle Hanzi'." Sears said with a smile. Hanzi means Chinese characters. He has put more than 96,000 ancient Chinese characters onto the website. "When I study each character, I wonder what the ancient Chinese thought," said Sears.
After visiting many Chinese cities, Sears learned more about China and ancient Chinese culture. He said when he came to China in the last century, few Chinese could speak good English. "However, you can hear English in many places in China now. Chinese language and culture were mysterious and not known by people in most countries then, but now, more and more people in the world are learning Chinese, even Chinese history, traditional Chinese medicine and so on," Sears added.
At present, the 70-year-old American has made his home in China. "When I die, I hope my website will live on, and I'm planning to write a book about my research. This will be my gift to China," he said.

The potato chips Du is making are called guoba, usually made of millet rice (小米),but here Du chose colored potatoes as the ingredients (原料).
Zhenba, in the south of Shanxi, has been trying to sell high-quality (质量) potatoes. But the sales are at a low level. To help solve this problem, Du, a student of Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, together with his team, introduced colorful potatoes and made them into crispy, fried potato snacks. After trying again and again, it gradually turned into a popular snack at Du’s university. At the end of last year, Du’s team set up their own factory in the village to plant and produce the snacks locally. At the beginning of this year, the production line was put into use.
However, while helping the local community, Du was under pressure to graduate. Although he was supposed to graduate in June 2020, Du offered to put off graduation for one year. Du said the production line project was still on the way and he wanted to live up to the expectations of the villagers. “A lot of my friends and teachers told me not to do that. But if the factory is built but does not run well, it would be against my original intention (初心).” Finally, Du’s teacher supported him.
Recently, Du’s potato snacks took part in a college food competition. His product was once in the first place with the support of many local villagers, which touched Du. “Rural revitalization (乡村振兴) depends on industrial revitalization. I want to make an effort with my hard work in this process.”

However, there is still unfairness between boys and girls. For example, a school may have a football team only for boys, but a volleyball team only for girls. So can girls play boys’ sports on a boys’ team? There are different opinions among people.
Some people strongly against girls playing boys’ sports on a boys’ team. They often say it could be dangerous for girls. On average, girls are shorter and weigh less than boys, which give girls an unfair disadvantage. So during the game, girls could be injured. Another worry is that girls may be nervous with boys on the team. Then they may not play well. Meanwhile, some boys want to have their own space. They don’t want to feel uncomfortable with girls.
However, some other people hold an opposite view. They reply that there are some small and light boys on a boys’ team, too. Girls can play the roles just like these boys. Although it may be unfair for girls to compete with boys in boys’ games, girls who are willing to take the risk should be allowed to have a try. Some people also point out that if boys and girls can cooperate(合作) well on a team, they can learn from each other and help each other.
No matter what the different opinions are, there is no doubt that both boys and girls are excited about playing sports. Whether or not girls can play boys’ sports on a boys’ team still needs further consideration.

On April 5, the State Council (国务院) published new rules about school bus safety. These new rules are stricter than the old ones.
Under the new rules, local governments must make sure that students go to nearby schools or boarding (寄宿的) schools to reduce traffic risks. Also, local governments must help kids in the countryside reach their school buses.
From now on, school buses have a speed limit of 80 km/h on highways and 60km/h on normal roads. While on the road, other cars must let school buses go first.
The new rules also say that school buses must never be overloaded (超载的).
There are many other rules as well. A school bus must have more than seven seats. On each bus, there must be at least one adult(成年人) to keep an eye on the kids. Each school bus must have a fire extinguisher (灭火器), a first aid kit (急救箱) and a GPS.
Last year, a series of school bus accidents happened in China. To stop such accidents, the Central Government decided to strengthen (加强) the rules for school buses.

Personality is also about how people think, behave, and react(反应)to everything around them from day to day.
So what makes people think and behave in certain ways?
Part of the reason is that people are born like this, a baby gets its blood type, genes(基因)and other physical things when it’s still inside its mother. These things may help decide what the baby will be like.
But one’s personality doesn’t stop here. Family life, school learning and life experiences can also make you the person you are. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible to change your personality. You can always try to make yourself better. Don’t get too worried about your shortcomings(缺点). Just accept them. This is a good way to start making changes.
If you don’t know how to make friends, find out why. Is it because you’re too shy? Tell yourself to smile at people. Start talking to people using warm greetings.
Don’t give yourself a hard time about it all. It’s not easy to change lifelong(终生的)habits in one night. Keep working at it. One day you’ll see that you can turn over a new leaf and be a new you!

According to International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses, an organization responsible for naming new viruses, the task of naming a virus is no less important than naming a person.
Over the past decade, some improper names have caused problems. In 2009, the “swine flu” was widely used before the official name, H1N1 virus, was announced. This led Egypt to kill all of its pigs even though it appeared and spread among people who hadn’t been near pigs. In 2015, MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) caused some actions against the nations and people of this area.
So in 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the names of viruses should be easy to remember but avoid being named after geographic locations, people, species or classes of animals and foods.
Following these rules, the new coronavirus we are suffering from was named “COVID-19” by the WHO on Feb. 11. In this name, “CO” means “corona”, “VI” stands for “virus” and “D” means “disease”.
Next time you read about a virus you don’t know, you may get some clues about it from its name.
