Facial recognition technology(人脸识别技术)is widely used today. For example, police use it to search for bad guys. It's also used to unlock phones or doors.
Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection(探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising(广告).
Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can judge a person's "happiness" or "fear" level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people's ages and five levels of feelings——from "very happy" to "very unhappy".
Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers' experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy(隐私)group, is one of them. She thinks ▲ . For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person's age and feelings.
However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn't store people's information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn't keep any personal information or record any videos.

5G will make self-driving cars possible. Even airplanes will become “smart” in the near future. Passengers will be able to use 5G networks in the air to connect to the Internet and can order for food and drinks.
5G will be a big help for students who take online classes. Many people live in poor areas in the world where there are no schools. But with 5G, this will change. Students all over the world will be able to see places like the Great Wall without leaving their rooms.
It will be also easier for doctors to treat patients remotely by 5G. It means caring for patients from far away.
The facts listed above are only a part of what 5G will make possible and popular. Just as in the early days of the Internet, few could see how it could change our life and the world. It turned out to be a fraud (诈骗), however. The scammer (诈骗者) used artificial intelligence (AI) to make a person look and sound like Guo’s real-life friend. Guo was scammed out of 4.3 million yuan in only 10 minutes.
The case has raised heated discussions on AI fraud. In today’s world of AI, voices, images and videos are all likely to be deeply synthesized (合成). And some people use it for criminal purposes. People who are not aware of scammers, such as children and seniors, are especially in danger of such high-tech fraud.
AI fraud is harder for people to identify. People have to be more aware of personal information protection. Don’t be so quick to give out images of faces and fingerprints to strangers.
Teenagers should particularly be careful when using social media accounts and logging in (登录) to video games to prevent their private information from being stolen.
The government is taking action to stop cases of AI fraud. In November 2022, it made clear existing bans (现行的禁令) on the generation and replacement of human faces, as well as on the creating and copying of human voices.

Since the beginning of the space age in the 1950s, thousands of rockets and satellites have gone to space. There are more than 500,000 pieces of debris around the Earth. Although your chance of getting hit is extremely small, we are still facing an ever-increasing risk of space junk.
More than 27,000 pieces of debris, or “space junk”, are tracked in space, according to NASA. Much more debris is too small to be tracked but large enough to threaten human spaceflight and robotic tasks. Since a piece of debris can move like a speeding bullet, getting hit by these tiny pieces often leaves huge holes in many satellites, telescopes and other objects around our planet.
Space junk is also a huge danger to spacemen. “This is particularly important. Careful consideration needs to be made about the space junk before we do spacewalk exercises.” Joon Wayn Cheong, a satellite systems expert said.
Scientists are fully aware of the problem, and they are solving it in different ways.
In 2018, the UK's Survey Space Center used a net to catch space junk in an experiment. It was the first successful tryout of space cleanup technology. It included finding debris and catching it with a net and a harpoon.
Another solution is to use robotic arms. Clear Space 1, the European Space Agency’s task to remove space junk, is expected to be sent in 2025, which will use robotic arms to catch the debris, BBC Science Focus Magazine reported. It plans to locate, catch and throw debris into the atmosphere, where it will be burnt up by the strong pressure and friction of reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

I wasn't looking forward to going home, because my friends were busy with their own business and weren't able to spend time lazily with me. It's then when I walked past a homeless person that I hadn't seen before. He was moving back and forth(来回的)to stay warm, and very gently asking for some change. His words for money were so quiet that I could hardly hear him.
Something made me stop, turn around and walk up to him. At the same time, some thoughts appeared in my head like, "What do you think you're doing?" "You're alone, it's dark out and you're a woman. "Before I knew what I was doing, I asked him if he had had dinner yet and if he would like to join me at a nearby restaurant. He said he hadn't eaten and he would like to. So, he walked with me a few yards to the restaurant and held the door open for me as we entered.
He asked for the smallest thing on the menu but I ordered a larger meal and I explained that the price wasn't worth worrying about. We had a good dinner and a pleasant conversation about our life like where we grew up and what kind of music we liked. During the whole time, I just tried to say the right thing and give him the respect and care everyone has. I didn't want to show that I was better than him.

Zhao is a food deliveryman in Wuhan. He and other local deliverymen worked day and night with no time off and often forgot about meals during the days when the COVID-19 broke out.
The virus (病毒) wouldn’t let him and the others have a rest. “People needed us,” he said.
During the pandemic, food deliverymen had searched all stores around to prepare orders because of the shortage (不足) of supplies in Wuhan. “It was the busiest time I had ever seen as a food deliveryman,” Zhao said. “It’s so tiring, but I feel what I did was valued.”
One of the biggest changes that Zhao Bin has noticed is that customers now show more respect and understanding toward food delivery workers.
“Before the pandemic, customers didn’t understand why delivery was late on rainy days.” Zhao said. “But after the pandemic, they text us to let us know it’s fine if we’re running late.”
Zhao loves taking pictures of people since he spends most of his time on the street. He said he took up photography as a hobby after working as a museum security guard. Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won’t help you see better. A certain minimum amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia(近视)can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there’s a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it’s down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents. So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white?
Color blindness doesn’t usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can’t tell certain colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. Our eyes have cone cells(视锥细胞)that sense different wavelengths (波长)of light. If these cells don’t work properly, color blindness occurs.
There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light.
However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.
1. Which can help the eyes to turn light into information for the brain?A.vitamin A | B.vitamin B | C.vitamin C | D.vitamin D |
A.stops the brain from seeing |
B.doesn’t help you see better at all |
C.will give you superhuman vision. |
