All living things on the earth need other living things to live with. Nothing lives alone. Sometimes one living thing kills another to live, so they form a food chain.

Plants make food from sunlight, water, air and so on while some animals on(以……为食) plants directly. For example, locusts(蝗虫) are small insects. Millions and millions of locusts in a group can eat anything that is green, including a lot of food that people need. In India, locusts have ever destroyed(破坏) many fields of crops. However, locusts can be food for birds, chickens, ducks or other living things, even humans.

Humans are at the top of the food chain, they eat not only locusts, but also birds, chickens, ducks or many other plants and animals. They are members of many food chains, but they often break up the food chains.

Each form of life is linked(和……有联系) to all the others. Breaking the links puts all lives in danger. Humans should share the world with other living things in peace.

1. No living things can live alone.
2. Some animals eat plants directly to live.
3. Locusts don’t eat food that people need.
4. Humans hardly ever break up the food chains.
5. It’s dangerous for humans to break up the food chains.

【推荐1】People depend on plants. We use plants for food, cloth, shelter (住处), and even the air we breathe (呼吸).

Plants keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen (氧气). Oxygen is part of the air we breathe.

Plants are also part of the water cycle (水循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air.

Plants give us a lot of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains (谷物) come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges, or bananas! Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well.

When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help cut down on pollution because big trucks don’t need to take your food to shops. You also help reduce the amount of rubbish because you don’t need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the ground or off a plant and put it into a basket!

Trees are an important plant resource (资源). Trees provide wood to build homes and furniture. Trees are used to make lots of things around your home and at your school. And trees provide fruits that are good for you. Without trees, the earth would be a very different place.

名校
文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,这篇文章讨论了人类对蛇的恐惧起源以及它可能是如何进化而来的,同时也强调了蛇在环境中的重要性以及人们如何克服对它们的恐惧。

【推荐2】① I love snakes. My mum does not. Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never even seen one. So where does the fear come from?

② According to scientists’ experiments, it seems that we’ve evolved (进化) this way—faster to see snakes and faster to learn to fear them.

③ People may not be born afraid of snakes, but we are born able to see them quickly. In tests with pictures, people picked out snakes faster than they could find flowers, birds, and rabbits. It wasn’t just snakes, though. People also found spiders (蜘蛛) and angry faces faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems like we find things that might be threatening to us faster than things that aren’t.

④ People also learn to fear snakes faster than many other things. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late. So it’s important for us to fear snakes. And it matters more to nature. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as cats, but they’re just as important to the environment. If we don’t fear snakes, we may choose to kill instead of avoiding them. Our fears help snakes to live safely.

⑤ How can we deal with our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a research recently where students went on a field trip. Guides helped them find and catch snakes in the forest. Everyone can safely touch and hold a snake. It showed that snakes weren’t so bad when you got to know them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip aren’t afraid now. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favourite animals. Maybe I should take my mum on the next field trip.

【推荐3】Oink! The Year of the Pig is coming. How much do you know about pigs? Do you like them? Many people don't, because they believe that pigs are naturally fat, lazy and dirty. But are any of those things true?

It is true that pigs are fat. They eat a lot. But they are useful to us. We get more than just pork from pigs. We can use their skin to make shoes. We can use their hair to make brushes. Pigs also provide us with ingredients for drugs like insulin(胰岛素). Insulin can treat diabetes (糖尿病).

People sometimes say. “You are as stupid as a pig.” But pigs are not stupid. In fact pigs are one of the 10 smartest animals. They have a good memory and can tell different shapes apart. Many experts think pigs are easier to train than dogs or cats. In France, people teach pigs to find truffles(松露). With their good sense of smell, they can find truffles even faster than dogs.

When you see pigs, they are usually in dirty water or mud. That's because pigs have no sweat glands(汗腺). On hot days, they have to cool themselves in water or mud. This keeps insects away from them as well. Mud can also protect their skin from sunburns.

These stereotypes about pigs often make us hold a negative(负面的) view about the animal. For example, If someone eats a lot, we say that they have “pigged out”. If someone's room is very messy, we might say his or her room looks like a pigsty(猪圈).

But people in ancient China really liked pigs. People thought the pig's big head and ears were a symbol of good luck. If someone had a round and chubby(胖乎乎的) face, he or she was thought to be blessed(有福气的). People also believed the animal, stood for wealth, as humans use every part of the pig. Piggy banks are a symbol of this. Most children have a piggy bank that they can use to save money.
