Each country has many kind people who volunteer to take care of others. For example, some high school and university students in the US often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals or old people’s homes. They read books for the people or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of the sick people. They clean up their houses or do the shopping. For boys who don’t have fathers there is an organization called “Big Brothers”. University students and other people take these boys to play baseball games and help them get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a lot of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities. Some of these clubs show movies or have short trips to the mountains, the beaches or the museums. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and university students as volunteers because they can understand the problems of these boys and girls more easily.

Ghaliya remembers when a rubbish collector came to her house in Jakarta. The man asked if she had an old mobile phone his children could use to get on the Internet for learning from home. Ghaliya thought there must be many people who need second-hand mobile phones out there. She and her group decided to provide mobile phones for poor students so that they could do face-to-face learning.
When the project was made public, many people donated (捐赠) second-hand phones, while others donated money. Now nearly 300 phones have been given to students in and around Jakarta as well as to faraway areas.

When Ingrid Munro worked in the UK she learned about the lives of the poor, so she always tried her best to help the poor. And in 1988,Munro and her Canadian husband had adopted(收养)a homeless boy. This boy had been run over by a bus and was unable to walk freely. Munro's learning about the hard lives of the poor increased when she adopted the boy's two brothers two years later.
In 1999 she decided to start a small club in Kenya. The members would be 50 women, beggars who had been kind to children. No one imagined it could become so successful that it would change into a bank called Jamii Bora Bank. Munro did not expect that it would turn out to be such a great success. Instead of employing(雇佣) experts, she has trained those women herself. And she employs ex-beggars, the ones who joined them in the very early days and have come out of poverty. She teaches these beggars how to do everything from the beginning. What makes this bank different from others is the way they treat the borrowers. People who volunteer to help others in their communities (社区) get “time dollars” or “time coins”—that can be exchanged (交换) in later life if they need help. It has taken effect in Britain, Japan, Sweden and other countries. And so, too, in China.
The idea of “time banks” was introduced in China in the 1990s, and Shanghai was one of its first users. However, being short of clear rules, volunteers and good management, the project finally failed. Recently, the idea has become popular once more because of China’s rapidly aging population.
The Chinese version mostly hopes to encourage younger senior people to provide services for the older ones. I’m happy to help them before I become too old to look after myself, said Yang Beifen, 68, a community volunteer in Shanghai. I’ve collected over 10 coins now, and it’s comforting to know that I can use them if I need to in the future.
The idea of “time banks” is one way to deal with the problem of an aging population. By the end of last year, there were more than 5.2 million people aged 60 or older in Shanghai. Of these people, about 30 percent were aged below 64 and 16 percent were over 80. Many young people are too busy to care for the elderly, so the elderly have to help each other. The Bank of China even developed a WeChat mini program to help the elderly.
However, the needs of the elderly are a great challenge for the city. There’s a long way to go.

Earle Dickson noticed that his wife often burned or cut herself accidentally while working in the kitchen. She would then need his help to put bandages (绑带) on the wounds. Since Dickson couldn’t always be there to help her, he invented a bandage that she could easily deal with herself. Sold under the brand name Band-Aid, these bandages are now used for many types of minor (not serious) cuts.
Then there was Bette Nesmith Graham, a secretary who wanted a simple way to correct her typing mistakes. One day, as she was watching painters use touch-up paint to a wall, the idea hit her that the same way could be used on paper. She mixed a white paint and used a small brush to apply it to her work. This small bottle of paint with brush finally came to be known as Liquid (液体) Paper.
In some cases, people invent things for one purpose but end up using them for another. Take tea bags for example. In 1908, a New York tea seller named Thomas Sullivan came up with the idea of creating small gifts for customers by putting tea leaves in small silk bags. Customers are supposed to take out the tea leaves from each bag before making a pot of tea. However, some people misunderstood and began putting the unopened bags into hot water, and the custom of using tea bags was born.
Sometimes inventions are used for their original (起初的) purposes. Other times they end up being used for something completely different. Either way, they make our lives a whole lot better.

Dottie Pownall, a fifth-grade teacher in West Virginia, USA, has been using balls as chairs since December 2008. “The students love them,” she says. Pownall took a survey of her students. She found that 80% of the students thought sitting on the balls helped them pay more attention to what they were learning.
The teacher, Pisa Witt, felt so strongly about the use of balls as chairs, she started Witt Fitt. This company encourages the use of the balls. And the company educates not only teachers but also students on how to use them. “Our products are used in 24 states, three provinces in Canada, Puerto Rico (波多黎各) and Japan,” says Witt. “Research shows that sitting on the balls makes them sit up straighter. You can slouch (低头垂肩地坐) on a ball,” says Witt, “but it feels awful.” Because the students are moving, their blood (血液) increases. That carries more oxygen (氧气 to the brain (大脑), so the kids have more energy and can focus longer.
“Furthermore, they’re fun.” says Pownali.

A video of a black sun bear at the Hangzhou Zoo has become popular. In the video, the bear stands on its back legs and the fur (毛) on its behind is loose (松散的). Many people thought it was a person standing in a bear suit.
The zoo workers said that the sun bear was real. “If a person did wear a bear suit, they would be falling down within minutes because of the hot weather in summer. ”
Later, the zoo made a statement (声明) in the name of “Angela”, the sun bear. “Some people think I stand like a person. It seems you don’t understand me very well,” the statement said. “Let me say again to everyone that I am a sun bear—not a black bear, not a dog—a sun bear!”
Sun bears live in the forests of Southeast Asia. They are the smallest bears in the world. They are only about the size of a large dog. They can be 1.1-1.5 meters tall while standing on their back legs. They can weigh from 25 to 75 kilograms.
Sun bears are the least studied out of all the 8 kinds of bears. Maybe this is because they are shy and live far away from people. They are listed as vulnerable (易危的) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their numbers in the wild have fallen by 35% over the past thirty years, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). They need more protection.

Then my dad reached down beside his seat and took out the old, broken Bible that he had read many times, the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a friendly quarrel with one of the neighbours. I knew he would miss it. I knew, though, that I must take it.
