Each country has many kind people who volunteer to take care of others. For example, some high school and university students in the US often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals or old people’s homes. They read books for the people or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.

Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of the sick people. They clean up their houses or do the shopping. For boys who don’t have fathers there is an organization called “Big Brothers”. University students and other people take these boys to play baseball games and help them get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.

Each city has a lot of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities. 【推荐2】These people come from the poorest places of Kenya. They were beggars and workers on the farm. However, they are people with dreams and hopes. Thanks to Jamii Bora, thousands of them are realizing their dreams.

When Ingrid Munro worked in the UK she learned about the lives of the poor, so she always tried her best to help the poor. And in 1988,Munro and her Canadian husband had adopted(收养)a homeless boy. This boy had been run over by a bus and was unable to walk freely. Munro's learning about the hard lives of the poor increased when she adopted the boy's two brothers two years later.

In 1999 she decided to start a small club in Kenya. The members would be 50 women, beggars who had been kind to children. No one imagined it could become so successful that it would change into a bank called Jamii Bora Bank. Munro did not expect that it would turn out to be such a great success. Instead of employing(雇佣) experts, she has trained those women herself. And she employs ex-beggars, the ones who joined them in the very early days and have come out of poverty. She teaches these beggars how to do everything from the beginning. What makes this bank different from others is the way they treat the borrowers. 文章大意:本文主要介绍了什么是“时间银行”以及它在中国的现状。

【推荐3】The idea of “time banks” was created by Yale University Professor Edgar Cahn in 1980 as a way to encourage volunteerism (志愿服务). It’s simple enough. People who volunteer to help others in their communities (社区) get “time dollars” or “time coins”—that can be exchanged (交换) in later life if they need help. It has taken effect in Britain, Japan, Sweden and other countries. And so, too, in China.

The idea of “time banks” was introduced in China in the 1990s, and Shanghai was one of its first users. However, being short of clear rules, volunteers and good management, the project finally failed. Recently, the idea has become popular once more because of China’s rapidly aging population.

The Chinese version mostly hopes to encourage younger senior people to provide services for the older ones. I’m happy to help them before I become too old to look after myself, said Yang Beifen, 68, a community volunteer in Shanghai. I’ve collected over 10 coins now, and it’s comforting to know that I can use them if I need to in the future.

The idea of “time banks” is one way to deal with the problem of an aging population. By the end of last year, there were more than 5.2 million people aged 60 or older in Shanghai. Of these people, about 30 percent were aged below 64 and 16 percent were over 80. Many young people are too busy to care for the elderly, so the elderly have to help each other. The Bank of China even developed a WeChat mini program to help the elderly.

However, the needs of the elderly are a great challenge for the city. There’s a long way to go.

1. What do we know about the idea of “time banks”?
A.It’s popular only in Europe.B.It was created by a Chinese teacher.
C.It’s kind of difficult to understand.D.It’s a form of saving for the future.
2. Which is NOT the reason for “time banks” failure in China in the 1990s?
A.The management was poor.B.There were not clear rules.
C.People didn’t have much money at that time.D.There were not enough people who would like to volunteer.
3. What is Yang Beifen’s attitude towards the idea of “time banks”?
A.She is pleased with it.B.She is worried about it.
C.She pays no attention to it.D.She feels disappointed about it.
4. According to the last two paragraphs, ________.
A.young people should help each otherB.more work should be done to help the elderly
C.the start of the WeChat mini program wasn’t easyD.an aging population is a common problem around the world
5. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce some volunteers.B.To introduce the history of “time banks”.
C.To give facts about “time banks” in China.D.To introduce “time banks” to more countries.
