Drones(无人机)can do a lot of things for us, taking photos, delivering things from packages to pizzas to beer and following wild animals. But they have other uses now.
Can you believe it? Drones can serve people coffee. US company IBM has made this kind of drone. It can deliver coffee to sleepy people. The drone can know when to bring a cup of coffee by studying a person's data. Then, the drone will fly to the person. There is a special device(设备)under the drone. It helps the drone to give people coffee. The drone can also learn about someone's coffee-drinking habits and predict when someone needs their next cup of coffee.
Drones can also save lives. One company in Africa use drones to deliver medicine and blood fast and save many people's lives. The drones are able to fly at speeds of up to 60 mph and when they are within a minute of the destination(目的地), the doctors receive a text and wait nearby. The drones drops off the package and then returns to its home.
A 92-year-old hunter in Virginia was lost and had to spend a night in the woods. The police searched for him all night but failed to find him. Luckily, the drone tracked him down in 20 minutes. Also, drones helped the firefighters know about the fire in the wildfire fight.

The famous English writer, Charles Dickens, said that he could walk down any streets in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many of the great men of the world have had wonderful memories.
A good memory is of great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he learns when he is a small child. Some children, like boys and girls, don’t live in their own country, and they seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. At school, it is not so easy to learn a foreign language because students have so little time for it and they are busy with other lessons too.
A man’s mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but also of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way, there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture forever in our minds.
Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.

Imagine taking a flying taxi to the airport, or flying over city streets at rush hour faster than you could in a car. Believe it or not, you may be able to do these things in an electric air taxi soon.
An air taxi is a small aircraft-something like a drone (无人机) —that can go straight up and down and carry people from place to place.
In June, a company called Joby Aviation started testing their new air taxi. By 2025, Joby hopes to start carrying people for money. They’ve worked with Delta Air Lines to fly people from their homes to the airport. Joby also wants their air taxis to provide a ride-sharing service in the air. Just like you may use an app to order a car to pick you up, you could use an app to order an air taxi.
Joby’s air taxis will be flown by a pilot, and can carry four other people. They can fly as fast as 200 MPH and can go around 100 miles before the batteries (电池) need to be recharged. Joby says their taxis are both quieter and cheaper. The company wants to ask for about $3 a mile at first. But over time, they hope to bring the price down to less than $1 per mile.
Joby isn’t the only company making air taxis. France even plans to use a few air taxis in Paris during next summer’s Olympic Games. But there’s still a lot to do before air taxis become common. For one thing, governments need to make rules about where, when, and how these taxis can fly. And some people worry that air taxis will add noise and traffic to our skies. Some think that only rich people can use them.
Still, it seems likely that air taxis will be part of the future of travel.

Smart Schoolbag
Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush?
A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner(扫描装置)are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.
Weather Sweets
Can you eat weather?
A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day.
The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed.
The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made.
Sunrise Bed
It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it?
To help you get up, a company has created a “tool” — a sunrise bed.
It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. The printing is also called the movable type printing (活字印刷). But how did it work in the past?
First of all, the clay was made into movable types. Then words were engraved (雕刻) carefully onto the types. After that, the words were chosen and put in right order in a box according to the text. Next, the workers brushed ink onto the movable types. Finally, the types could be used for printing. They could be used again and again for different books.
The movable type printing plays an important role in Chinese culture. With the help of it, Chinese culture spread around the world more quickly. At the same time, the movable type printing was widely used in the world. As a result, more and more culture communication among countries took place.

Fully two thirds of the world’s high speed rail (by length) is in China. Here, we track the exciting technological developments in high speed rail and consider their cultural influence.
While the main advantage of the high speed rail lines is convenience for people to get from one city to another as quickly as possible, some of these high speed lines have become popular tourist attractions (景点). A good example of this is the Hefei-Fuzhou high speed line. Technically speaking, this was one of the most challenging high speed rail routes ever built; nearly 90% of the track was laid either on bridges or in tunnels (隧道). However, the amazing views are worth it, as the train goes through some of China’s most beautiful mountainous areas, including the Huangshan and the Wuyi Mountain Ranges.
As China has gained skills and knowledge in high speed rail, it is trying to export (出口) its technology to other countries. Its first project on the international market was the line connecting Istanbul with Turkey’s capital, Ankara, 530 kilometers away. This was followed by projects among other countries. Perhaps its most challenging project is a Trans Asian network connecting China with Europe. Although it is difficult, China will make every effort to take on this plan. It is hoped to be completed by 2030 as a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (中国“一带一路”倡议).
Thanks to high speed rail, the travel time between main cities in China has already been reduced to only a few hours. So this convenience should improve the development within and out of China. No doubt, it will also bring the people of the country closer together, and in time bring about deep social changes.
1. What is the purpose of the example of the Hefei-Fuzhou line in Paragraph 2?A.To prove how fast the high speed lines can be. |

Thang-ga (唐卡) is a special kind of painting and picture. It was found only in Tibet. It started from the Tang Dynasty. Thang-ga paintings have interested many people in recent years. At the same time, the Chinese government has also tried hard to protect the culture.
Thang-ga was developed in the 7th century in the Tibetan area. Thang-ga shows Tibetan people’s lives. The paintings are colorful. The paints used in Thang-ga are different from those in other paintings. Because of the special environment of the Tibetan Plateau (青藏高原) and the excellent painting skills, the colors of Thang-ga look special. Through hand-making, the beautiful colors could last for hundreds of years.
However, with the development of machines, people now use cheaper and more easily-made chemicals to make Thang-ga paints. The traditional paints used in Thang-ga needed too much work and there were many secret methods. Once people stopped making the paints and forgot about them. So the skills were lost. The traditional Thang-ga paintings are difficult to find now.
Although Thang-ga isn’t popular among all Chinese people, it is still a traditional skill for our country and even a kind of Chinese culture. But now, only a few people can do this job. It’s a pity. So people should realize not only this skill should be protected, but also other traditional skills, like the paper cutting, Chinese opera, shadow puppet plays and so on. If not, they will be lost.

Martin noticed Pablo was smiling and looked very happy. He could also see several large fishes in the boat. Martin greeted Pablo and asked how long it took to catch the fish. “Just a few hours,” replied Pablo. Martin asked, “Why didn’t you stay longer and catch more fish?” “I have enough for my family,” Pablo said. “And what do you do with the rest of your day?” asked Martin. “I take a nap, play with my children, spend time with my wife, and go into the village to see my friends and play cards.
