I'm Michael Crook. I was born in China but grew up in the UK. China has changed a lot over the years. I like excitement and I think China is the place to come for excitement. So I have come back.

I think the Chinese notion(观念)of education is very different from the Western notion of education. In English,we have ‘the carrot and the stick’. I think in Chinese tradition,a lot of stress(强调)was made on the stick. Well , I feel that the carrot is much more effective(有效的)than the stick.

My parents are not strict(严厉的)ones. I think they are both good educators(教育家).They don't use the stick. They would discuss things with us reasonably. They treat us more or less as equals(相同的人). My father used to say that he didn't believe in generation gap(代沟).There is no such thing that parents don't understand their children or children don't understand their parents. Why, if you don't talk with your children,if every time your children tell you something they truly believe and their truthful thoughts, you scold(责备)them at once, then of course they stop talking to you and won't tell you the truth.

1. Why has the writer come back to China?

Many people say that they are working too many hours. They don’t have enough time to relax or to stay with heir family. Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year on work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year than a French worker.

Why do people work so many hours? Some people work more hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don’t pay overtime. Their workers don’t get more pay for more work. Some people think it’s their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don’t work more hours.

Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks.

One study shows that fewer than half of the workers used all their vacation days. In Britain, there is a saying,“All work and no play makes Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy.”

If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

In the rich part, a lot of people eat too much. In one part, children are hungry and in the other, a lot of people are fatter and fatter and have to go on diets or do some exercise to lose weight. For example, a dog or a cat in North America eats better than a child in the poorer countries.

The poor countries have some difficult problems. Sometimes the land is too poor to grow anything on. The land can get better, but people have to do a lot of things first. More experts (专家) should go there to teach people how to enrich their land and how to find water.

But rich countries have problems, too. They are not always pleasant places to live in. Sometimes the air is too dirty to breathe (呼吸) and the rivers are too dirty to swim in or to take water. The roads and the streets are full of people and buses. Cars usually move very slowly. Noise is terrible. A lot of people do not have houses to live in. People must do something about these problems. We should do something to make the air and the rivers clean and build more houses. But it will take a long time.

This summer, I went to Japan, too. From airports to railway stations, streets and toilets, wherever we went was clean. People say that Japan is the cleanest country in the world although we hardly see cleaners on the street. How could it be?

I finally got to know the truth from a Japanese: most Japanese don’t eat while they are walking. They never talk loudly on the subway. They clean the toilets after using them. And people always sort out(分类) the rubbish(垃圾), following the law. Just as the famous saying goes, “One for all, all for one”.

As far as I can see, Japanese people are quite serious and disciplined. Because of this, they can focus on one thing and can be successful in a number of fields. According to a WHO report, Japanese people have the longest life in the world. In Japan, the elderly will continue to work after retiring and keep a simple diet. I also saw an old man with gray hair running with the young men on the streets. Maybe the secret to a longer life is self-discipline (自律).

1. Can we often see a sanitation worker on streets in Japan?
