When students get bored with the boring classes in the classroom, the practical classes in the lab help them relax. There, students can get hands-on experience about the lessons they have learned. High school students are allowed to do the basic experiments (实验) of different subjects of science, mainly physics, chemistry and biology. However, lab safety matters. Lab safety rules are mainly about personal safety and proper ways to use instruments to avoid accidents inside the lab.
Middle school is the first chance for students to work in a science lab. Lab experiments are carried out with great care. And the students are always told to follow the instructions to make sure of lab safety. Firstly, you must be careful of your personal safety. While doing experiments, you should be dressed in protective things, like gloves, safety glasses and caps. Since you are dealing with the instruments or the chemicals (化学制品) for the first time, you might be curious to try something new. But such activities often lead to lab dangers. So, avoid any kind of carelessness.
There are different types of instruments inside a science lab. Physics labs are filled with different electrical instruments, which need safe using steps. So you need to do the experiments under the supervision (监督) of your teachers until you are good at them. Don’t mix the chemicals as you like. It might cause danger. Also you should always keep a biology lab clean to avoid pollution.
You are new to the lab and it is your duty to learn about the lab completely. You should learn about the correct using steps of expensive instruments. Turn off the gas as soon as you finish your experiments. You also should learn about where the fire extinguisher is and the working of fire safety instruments.

Popcorn, the Perfect Snack
Pop! Pop-pop! Fresh popcorn is one of the most popular foods when people are watching a movie or a ball game. It is delicious, cheap and easy to make. Popcorn may just be the perfect snack.
Not all corn pops. There is a tiny amount of water in corn kernels (玉米粒). When the corn kernel is heated the water in it turns to steam. In some corn the steam goes out through the outside cover. In popcorn the steam can’t get out. Pressure builds up until ... pop!
Popcorn has been around for thousands of years. Back then, people made popcorn by putting corn kernels on red-hot stones near a fire. Popcorn was not always eaten whole as it is now. Instead, people made the popcorn into a type of flour (面粉) and then added water to make bread.
The first poppers (爆米花机) were invented in the 1880s. These machines heated the corn with steam. Later these popcorn poppers were put into small wagons(车) and pulled to different places. Popcorn was sold at carnivals (狂欢节), parks and state fairs. People could not get enough of it!
Soon movie theaters began selling popcorn too. This started the tradition of eating popcorn at the movies. At this time popcorn became more popular than ever. For a short time though, people began eating less popcorn. In the 1950s, television was still very new. Many people stayed home to watch television instead of going to movies. Few people owned popcorn poppers. Then microwave ovens (微波妒) were invented. It became easy to make popcorn at home. Americans started to eat more popcorn again — more than one billion pounds each year!

Rules tell you what you are allowed and not allowed to do. Generally speaking, there are four kinds. The first one is the instructions that one person has to follow in the given order. The instructions can lead him to a certain goal. The second one is the orders that have been passed down from one generation (代) to others. The third one teaches people how to behave well so that they can meet good results. The fourth one is the plans that are used in a certain way to increase the chance of reaching a special goal.
Rules play an important role in our society. They help build a harmonious (和谐的) relationship. If every person was allowed to do as they wanted, we would probably meet killing, stealing and something terrible like these. The rules can surely prevent such things happening. Rules can also help keep people safe. For example, we all know that if there were no traffic rules, there would be more accidents. What’s more, rules can help build a more serious environment. It is a rule that students should wear uniforms in almost all schools. But what would happen if there was no such rule? Students would care more about what they look like!
However, rules need to be used correctly. One should offer learning experience so that people are glad to accept rules. Also one should offer people rules in a simple and clear way. After that, one should tell them the possible results if the rules are not followed.
In a word, following rules is a useful way to bring you happiness, or at least, a peaceful life. However, it is important to choose the proper ones.

Nowadays, many people in China and Japan are racing against time. They put a lot of value in “being on time”. However, in some countries of the world, people have different opinions on “being on time”.
Germany
Thanks to its industrial past, in Germany you are expected to arrive at least ten minutes earlier for any planned meeting. In Germany, being on time is risky enough because your hosts will probably already be there waiting, wondering how on earth you could be so stupid. What will you do if anything unexpected happens, like heavy traffic or a sudden rain? So remember to arrive early in Germany.
Saudi Arabia
Some countries care little about time and Saudi Arabia is one of them. It’s because of their long history of desert living where time is not the first thing to think about. It could be that it’s too hot to do anything on time. So don’t expect them to be on time. Moreover, looking at your watch during an event is even considered as bad manners. So don’t get angry with them, either.
Ghana
Most meeting times can be changed, even if an exact time is given. Ghanaians are very easygoing. They think that if everyone is late, then no one is late. After all, what can’t be done today can get done tomorrow. If you find it difficult to deal with, prepare to be unhappy.
Russia
Patience is considered a very important quality in Russian culture but being on time is not. When doing business in Russia, do be on time. Otherwise, it will be considered disrespectful. But Russians won’t hold themselves to the same standard. So, again, patience can be key.

Many schools have taken measures to limit students’ phone use on campus. According to Zhou Dandan, an English teacher at Beijing No. 20 High School, every classroom in her school has a deposit box(储物箱) to store students’ phones during class.
Before the new regulation(规定), she noticed that many students were lost in their phones. Some even played games on them during class. Zhou said that most students lack self-discipline(自律). Spending too much time on the phone will distract(分心) them and prevent them from learning, she added.
Li Jisen, an 18-year-old boy from Beijing 101 Middle School, agrees with the new policy. “In general, there are more advantages than disadvantages,” he said. Li believes that regulating phone use at school is the only way to put the focus back on study.
Kathy Chen, a parent from Shanghai, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen said it’s more important to train kids’ ability to self-manage and develop good habits of phone usage.

“Make-A-Wish” is one of the world’s most well-known charities (慈善机构). It makes wishes come true for children who have serious illnesses. It gives them hope and joy and helps them forget about their health problems and have fun.
It all started in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. Christopher was a 7-year-old boy who was very sick. He always dreamed of becoming a police officer. Tommy Austin and Ron Cox, two police officers, made his wish come true. They gave Christopher a tour of the city in a police helicopter (直升飞机) and made a real police uniform (制服) for him.
There are four kinds of wishes children usually have:
I wish to go. Children usually want to travel or go to a concert, a game or a park.
I wish to meet. Children sometimes want to meet their favorite actors, singers or players.
I wish to be. Some children wish to become actors, singers or police officers.
I wish to have. They often want to have a computer, a game, a bike or many other things.

Chinese writing has a history of six or seven thousand years. Calligraphy(书法), the art of writing, is almost as old as writing itself.
In ancient times, written Chinese was first symbols and pictures. Then, they gradually became characters. Later, characters and even full sentences were written on animal bones or shells for communication.
With time passing by, a number of written forms appeared. Each had its own local style. In the 3rd century BC, the First Emperor, Qinshihuang, set the same standard for the written characters— “small seal” script. It was first used in his own state of Qin, then in the whole nation. That writing system was very important in uniting(联合) the Chinese people and culture. At the same time, Cheng Miao developed another style called “clerical” script. It used short, straight brush strokes (笔画) to write quickly. By Han times, calligraphers had created a new style known as “regular” script. From the Tang Dynasty, it became the standard form used in government exams.
Over the centuries, Chinese artists and people with knowledge saw beauty in the forms of their written language. They turned calligraphy into one of the fine arts, in which calligraphers expressed themselves. In the Tang Dynasty, calligraphy was helpful for a person to get a place in the government.
The tools of calligraphy were simple enough. What we needed were the Four Treasures of the study: a brush, ink(墨), an ink stone and a writing surface. Students of calligraphy practiced the main types of script and improved their skills by copying the works of past masters. With the increase of their knowledge and practice, they slowly developed their own styles.
The art of calligraphy reached a high point in the 4th century. At that time, calligrapher Wang Xizhi was often regarded as the greatest master. Calligraphy remains a living art form to this day. It has become part of the school courses to pass on the Chinese culture.

After-school activities are important and they can help us grow up in many ways. They offer (提供) us chances to practice what we learn in class. We can also learn what we can’t learn from our books. We are busy with our study in school. Many students like to stay in the classroom to study instead of going out to relax. That’s not good for their health.
