It's important to learn things about protecting environment. Here's a 4Rs rule for us.
·Reduce
If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely (明智的). A large number of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses paper carelessly and then throws it away, soon we would not have any trees left. Some other things are also being wasted, and people don't know what to do with waste in big cities, so it's necessary to reduce waste.
·Reuse
You should always think of reusing the usable (可用的) things before throwing them away. Give your clothes or things you don't use to the poor. In a family, you may pass such clothes on to your younger brothers or sisters.
·Recycle
Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so we save lots of time and money, for example, cola cans are sent to a factory, where they're smashed flat(压平)and smelted (熔化), and the metal things are made into new cola cans.
·Repair
If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it. If you want to change for better ones, it's better for you to sell the old ones or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair.

C.to use paper carelessly | D.to use more and more things |
a.smash them flat b.collect the used cans
c.smelt them d.send them to a factory
A.a-b-c-d | B.d-c-b-a | C.b-d-a-c | D.b-d-c-a |
A.to throw away the old clothes |
B.to collect waste paper and soft drink cans |
C.to use both sides of paper |

This day is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students(NDESEMSS) (全国中小学生安全教育日). The theme of the day this year is to give students more knowledge about safety and make sure their lives safe.
A survey done by the China Youth and Children Research Centre showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes, earthquakes, fires and sports injuries(伤害).

When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl up your body and bend your legs.
Earthquakes are common natural disasters(灾难). When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don't stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there's a fire, follow the teachers' instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don't breathe in smoke.

Guests will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity — roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Architects (建筑师) and building engineers are thinking about how to make buildings greener. These days, green building is becoming more and more popular. What is a green building?
Firstly, we need to be very careful about the materials we use. It is better to choose renewable (可再生的) materials that the Earth replaces quickly or we can reuse some materials.
Secondly, planners must think about the needs of those who will spend time in green buildings. In many cases, green energy is more comfortable for people.
Although green buildings are more expensive to build, they are less expensive to run.

Since the age of 5, Laura Lee has had a strange habit—she collects cardboard toilet-paper rolls (厕所卷纸筒). She didn’t know this habit would one day become a recycling movement.
In 2018, Lee set up a goal to collect 1,000 kilograms of these rolls. She was then a 16-year-old student at Nanyang Girls High School in Singapore. By February 2021, she had collected 860kg. She received an Ecofriend Award for protecting the environment from the Singapore government.
Why did she choose toilet rolls? “They are convenient to collect and also one of the purest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material,” Lee told Singapore Today.
She organized “toilet roll challenge” within her school and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls. She gave speeches about what she was doing at local schools. She also raises awareness (意识) about different social causes (公益) through her Live (直播), “On A Roll”.
The waste management firm (废物管理公司) Veolia gave her money for every kilogram of toilet rolls. Then Lee will give away the money collected to a social cause focused on community health.

As we all know, there is very short of water in lots of areas in Africa. However, there is a magical tree which can help to solve the water problem. It is called the “sacred (神圣的) tree of Africa”—baobab tree (猴面包树).
A baobab tree is huge like an upside-down carrot. It can grow so large that it requires more than 40 people holding hands to circle it. Actually, most baobab trees are not very tall, only about ten meters.
A baobab tree is full of treasures. It is said that if everyone in Africa had a 10-meter-tall baobab tree, it would solve more than 50% of their food problems. In hot Africa, water is the most needed. When the rainy season comes, the baobab tree starts to hold water in its body. The baobab tree is said to be the most water-holding tree. It can hold thousands of kilograms of water in its body. Local people usually cut a hole in the tree with a knife and get clean water from it. The baobab tree leaves are a bit like spinach (菠菜) leaves. True to its Chinese name, the fruit of the baobab tree tastes like bread. But it’s not like bread with cream. It tastes dry. Local people seldom get stomach problems because of eating it.
Baobab trees are not only useful for humans, but for animals in nature! Their fruit can be good food for monkeys, lizards and other African animals. Their leaves can also be eaten to get enough water. The branches of a baobab look like a root, making it a perfect home to birds.
Indeed, baobab trees are the “tree of life” for Africans. The tall, straight baobab trees act like lighthouses. As the African saying goes, “Baobab trees lit up against the dark ‘African Sky’.” They light up not only the night sky, but also our respect for nature.
