Heimaey is a small island off the coast of Iceland. Each spring, more than a million Atlantic puffins(海鹦) visit Heimaey and its neighboring islands. They go there to breed(繁殖).
The muffins build nest(巢) on seaside cliffs. When a small puffin, or chick, comes from an egg, it spends six weeks in its nest. Then it leaves the nest and flies to sea.
Instinct(本能) tells small puffins to follow the light of the moon to the ocean. But the birds can be confused(迷惑) by Heimaey’s bright lights. They fly toward the lights instead of the moon. Many small puffins get lost. These lost birds can be hit by cars. Some are eaten by animals. The birds need help.
Children in Heimaey have teamed up to help puffins. Each breeding season, the kids form search parties. They carry flashlights and cardboard boxes. They are known as the Puffling (small puffin) Patrol.
“When you see a bird at night, you try to corner it and put it into the box,” says Eldur Hansen, a 15-year-old boy. Eldur has caught several birds this way. Nobody knows how the Puffling Patrol started. But each year, it rescues thousands of chicks.
The Puffling Patrol takes rescued puffins to the beach. But first, kids take the birds to an aquarium(水族馆). There, the pufflings are weighed and tagged. This helps scientists learn more about puffins.
Puffins are a vulnerable species. That means they could soon become endangered. But Stephen Kress says the Puffling Patrol gives him hope. “People can make a difference,” he says.

Han Hong had planned to hold the first concert of her 2020 national tour in Wuhan on February 29th. But she called off the show and called on people to donate (捐赠) to the city. Soon over 2 billion yuan was donated through Han Hong Love Charity Foundation which she founded in 2012.
“When you’re going through a situation like this, you want to do anything you can to help. There are so many kind people out there,” wrote a fan, who donated through Han’s foundation. “It’s good to know that there are trucks with medical things going straight to the hospital. Australian Great Barrier Reef -- a great collection of thousands of smaller coral(珊瑚) reefs, is the world’s largest reef system. It is over 2,600 kilometers long. It goes from the northern tip of Queensland to the state’s southern city of Bundaberg -- was given World Heritage(世界遗产) status in 1981. The UN says it is the “most biodiverse” (物种最为多样性)of all the World Heritage sites, and of “great scientific importance”.
The reef is home to many animals: fish, birds, turtles, sharks and even whales. Unfortunately, the reef that all these animals call home is in danger.
Climate (气候) change, overfishing, Epical storms and water pollution are damaging (损害)the reef every year. Coral reef experts at Australian universities say that if we do nothing to stop it, the coral reef could be destroyed(摧毁)before the year 2030.
Everyday things like driving cars, using electricity and running a factory give out greenhouse gases into the air. These gases make Earth warmer and warmer. This is a problem for the Great Barrier Reef and other reefs around the world.
Coral is very fragile, and even a 2-degree increase in water temperature is enough to kill it, according to Ove Hoegh-Guldberg reef researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia. Therefore, if the water temperature doesn’t go down, the coral dies. But it’s not only the coral that’s in danger. One quarter of all sea life lives on coral reefs.
If air pollution is not slowed down or stopped, then the water will warm by at least 3 degrees in the next 20 years, according to reef experts in a report from University of Queensland. This would spell the end for the Great Barrier Reef and all its sea life.

Black Bears
Black bears are the most common of the three. They live in forests in many different parts of the country. Even though they are known as black bears, they are not always black. Sometimes they are brown or tan, and a few are even white. Black bears are usually about five or six feet long, and they are the smallest of the three kinds of bears.
Brown Bears
Brown bears are found in a few western states and in Alaska. They live in forests as well as in open areas called the tundra. Brown bears are usually light or dark brown and can grow to be very large. In fact, some are eight feet long!
Polar Bears
Polar bears can be found in Alaska, which is in a cold area near the North Pole called the Arctic, where there are no trees. Polar bears are white, and they are the largest of the three kinds of bears. They are a little longer and usually heavier than the brown bear.
Other Interesting Things
Bears eat different things. Black and brown bears eat fish and other kinds of meat, roots, and berries. Polar bears eat fish, other meat, seaweed, and grass. All three types of bears eat as much food as they can find just before winter. Then during the cold months they sleep in caves or hollowed-out trees called “dens”, which keep them warm. Winter is when the female bears have their babies. All three types of bears have between one and four cubs. The cubs are born while the mother bear sleeps!

Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise on a window. Emily went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
“It must have flown into the window,” Alex said when his sister Emily called him to have a look. “Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck on the window.”
“Poor thing!” Emily said.
During the next month, another five birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows?” they wondered. Finally they found out the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn’t see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection(映像) of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window.
“Something has to be done to save the birds.” the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains across the windows, but this made the room dark. Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk(鹰). They made six hawks-one for each window. They stuck the hawks to the windows. They looked pretty and did not keep out much light. When the birds saw the hawks, they would fly away.
After that, there were no more dead birds. The family were much happier.

Caterpillars(毛虫) are often used as food for fishing. However, they are now set to join the war on plastic wastes.
Fcderical Bcrtocchini is a scientist with the Spanish National Research Council. When she's not working in her lab, Bcrtocchini keeps bees. One day, when she looked at her beehives(蜂箱),she found lots of caterpillars which were called waxworms(蜡虫). They are often used to feed fish. In the wild, however, they live in beehives, feeding on the wax that bees use to build their houses. Bcrtocchini picked out the caterpillars and put them in a plastic bag. Surprisingly, when she returned to the bag after cleaning out the hives, she (bund it fill! of holes. The worms had eaten their way out.
Bcrtocchini doesn't study plastic. However, you can't keep a good scientist away from an interesting question: Were the waxworms digesting(消化)the plastic?
Bertocchini got in touch with Paolo Bombeli and Christopher Howe at the university of Cambridge. According to their paper, some chemicals within the insects can really break down plastic.
Other scientists have also discovered plastic-eating species(物种). In 2016, for example, a Japanese team found a bacterium(细菌). The bacterium has to spend more than six months eating a layer(层) of plastic bag. However, Bertocchini and her partners discovered that it took a waxworm about 12 hours to eat a layer of plastic bag.
Butthe scientists reminded that it would be at least several years before they set free waxworms into the environment. They want to know if the waxworms are using the plastic as a food, or just they want to run away. If they just want to run away they are going to get fed very soon. But if they want to eat it as food, it's a completely different game.
"It's certainly not going to be the case that within six months we've solved the world's plastic problem, said Howe. "I wouldn't want people to think that within a few months, they can start throwing away plastic bags without worrying about it. "
