The painter Craigie Aitchison was born in Edinburgh in 1926. He came to London intending(打算)to study law(法律), but went to art school instead. There he found the traditional drawing classes difficult, but still kept on painting.
In his late twenties he was given money by the Italian government to study art in Italy. It was his first visit to Italy. He toured the country and became interested in the works by early Italian artists, especially Picro della Francesca. Italy remained close to his heart and he put what he learned into his own works.
Unlike some artists, Craigie never did drawings before he started a painting, as he felt that if he did, he might get bored and not do the painting afterwards. Instead, Craigie changed his paintings many times before they were finished. This explained why his favorite models were people who didn't ask to see their pictures while he was painting them. “If I feel they're worried and want to look at the painting. I can't do it.”
Craigie was not interested in following any tradition, but just painted the way he could. He died in London in 2009. However, his works still influence many young British painters.

Parapsychologists(灵学家)say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “six sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist(心理学家)at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects(受试者)were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they are being stared at. If people doubt theoutcomeof his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”
1. What’s the aim of the two experiments for?A.Prove why humans have a sixth sense. |

Since the age of three, Chelsie Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer. That dream nearly ended in 2010 when Hill was in a car accident, which put the 17-year-old girl in hospital for 51 days and left her paralyzed (瘫痪的) from the waist down. For most people, that would have destroyed any hope of a dancing career. But for Hill, it was the beginning. “I want to prove to everyone including myself that I’m still normal,” she said, “whatever normal means.”
Normal for her meant dancing, so Hill did it in her wheelchair alongside her nondisabled high school dance team. Half of her body was taken away from her, so she had to move it with her hands. It took much learning and patience.
After graduation from high school, Hill wanted to expand her dance network to include women like her. She met people online who were fighting for the dream of dancing against various spinal (脊柱的) injuries, and invited them to dance with her. To reach more people in a larger city, Hill moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities she called the Rollettes.
Every year Hill holds a dance camp called the Rollettes Experience for wheelchair users to help them bring out their acting talent. In 2019, 173 participants from ten countries attended. For many, it was the first time they’d felt they belonged. Edna Serrano said, “I didn’t know I could do so many things that my fellow teammates had taught me. It’s so powerful to have my teammates in my life, because they’re my teachers. I have more confidence.”
Chelsie Hill got what many of us never will: her childhood dream. She has been chasing her dream in the wheelchair. She’s a dancer. The Rollettes have helped her find something else just as fulfilling.

Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making your dreams real is life's biggest challenge(挑战). You may think you're not very good at some school subjects, or that it's impossible(不可能) for you to become a writer. Those kinds of ideas stop you from realizing(实现) your dream.
In fact, everyone can realize his dream. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don't let it leave your heart(心脏). Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is, in fact, made up of(由...组成) many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will help you to get better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book.
As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn something more useful and find new hobbies.

You do not have to be spineless(优柔寡断的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked or loved if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights(正当行为).But do it politely and pleasantly.Being friendly and polite to your group,to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You cannot expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes.Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed if he does not refuse to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged (灰心丧气的) when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like-selfishness,laziness,and other unpleasant qualities.Just remember that we all have some of these faults(缺点) and have to fight against them.
At the same time,it is important to remember that while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong,it is good sense to try to make it right.Perhaps you do not like a teacher or a classmate.Try to see why,and look at yourself, too,to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right when you have to learn to get along the best with the situation, without thinking too much about it.Worrying never helps in a situation you cannot change.

You must be surprised when you receive my letter, for we’ve been good friends for so long, so there is no need for us to write to each other. However, I would still like to express my thanks to you. In the past three years, what I remember the most clearly is a PE class when we were doing the 800-metre running exercise. During the exercise, I breathed(呼吸)so heavily that I hurt my throat. It seemed as if a fire was burning inside and I almost couldn’t take in air. At that moment, I was so scared that I thought I was going to die. My classmates were all completely shocked so no one was able to help me. However, you quickly carried me to the school doctor’s office. As soon as I lay down, you brought me a cup of hot water and stayed by my side to calm me down. I felt much better because of you.
What impressed me the most was not only the friendship between us, but the kindness of you which let me finally understand the true meaning of friendship. You truly care about others and you are always there to give a helping hand. These small actions can be put together and even make our world a better place.
You have always been the model to lead me to be a better person. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Finally, may our friendship last forever!
Yours,
Jenny

It is a good idea for parents to teach their children at an early age that all family members must work together to make the house clean, and each person must do his or her share(份) of the work. We can do this by starting a plan for chores and responsibilities when children are young.
