Little Helpers provides services and activities for local children. The organization was set up in Memphis in 2010. It has more than 12 chapters (地方分会) worldwide.
Volunteers for Little Helpers helped fill and give out backpacks in Merphis last Sunday. I got to attend the event and saw the enthusiasm(热情)among the volunteers, who were aged from 3 to 14 . “I just like to help.” said Jack, a 14-year-old volunteer. “There’s no reason for my volunteering. It’s just because I like to do it.”
The group holds monthly service projects for children of all ages. As Tran Bui Smith, one of the founders of Little Helpers, explained, “We give kids activities to make this world better. It doesn’t matter how little they are. They can come and take part. It may be a drive(运动)to collect things for those less lucky or a hands-on project where we work side by side together.”

Imagine a little girl who knows there will not be enough food for dinner, who can’t fill her stomach with water because it’s polluted (被污染), and who has watched life slip away (消失) from her father, little brother and sister because the family is too poor to see a doctor. She would gladly walk miles to school, but her mother needs her badly (非常) at home. What will her future be?
Is it hard to believe? For Maria Pestora, these are the real life.
But for just 52 pennies a day, you can sponsor (资助) a child like Maria. Through “Save the Children”, you can help Maria’s mother get the tools and ways she needs to turn their poor food into a good dinner, and get the money she needs to buy clothes and school things for Maria.
To help Maria most, your money is put together with that of other sponsors. Building a school, a hospital, or bringing in clean water is what “Save the Children” has been about since 1932. For you there are many rewards. You have the chance to write to or hear from your sponsored child, to receive photos or progress reports, to know you are reaching out to another person, not with a handout (救济品), but a hand up. That’s how “Save the Children” works. But without you, it can’t work. Please take a moment now to fill in and post the form below to help a child like Maria.
It can make a difference in her life and yours.

Who will save a flying bird caught in fishing line? Who will give a safe home to a snowy owl with no beak(喙)? Mona Rutger—that’s who! She has cared for thousands of injured(受伤的) animals. Mona runs a wildlife centre in Castalia, Ohio, called Back to the Wild.
Mona grew up on a farm. She spent a lot of time learning about the local wildlife when she was a little girl. As she got older, Mona learned more about animals. She decided that she wanted to help animals. She used some of her family’s land to start a wildlife centre. Injured animals could live in the centre until they were ready to go back to the wild.
Mona took care of the animals seven days a week. She didn’t think that was too much work, though. She knew the animals needed her. In time volunteers began to help her. Some people helped care for the animals. Others put money in a fund(基金) for the centre. The fund helped pay for animal feed and medical bills. One friend wrote and told a television station about Back to the Wild. The letter led to a special award(奖). Mona was named the Hero of the Year! She received a $ 10,000 prize from the television station. Mona used the money to help more animals.
Today, Mona is still taking care of animals. She also visits schools to teach children about protecting wild places and animals. She hopes more people will become heroes for animals, too!

Are you looking for a way to get your girl to connect with books and have time with other girls this winter vacation?
Having just one daughter among three sons, I have to make sure we have girl time. So I happily set up a girls’ book club for parents and their daughters. We meet once a month in our home, and we now already have six girls in the club. The parents stay for the club time and share their reading time with the girls. We found many advantages since the club was set up:
●The book club encourages girls to read great books.
●Girls do activities they would not normally try such as cosplay shows after reading.
●The book club provides time for girls’ talk.
●They can try new foods.
●They’ll read new books.
This year we’ve tried a few different activities which are on the fun side of novel reading, and it’s been a worthwhile experience. I encourage you to consider joining us in the new term if you also have a girl at Grade 7 in the community.
