Michael Faraday(迈克尔·法拉第) was one of the most famous scientists in history, and is known as “Father of Electricity(电)”. He discovered electromagnetic rotation, benzene, electromagnetic induction, etc. Without the work of this British scientist, many of the things we live with, such as computers, fridges, wouldn’t be here.
Faraday’s achievements seem more wonderful when we realize that he had very little schooling. He was born in 1791 in London. His father was too poor to send him to school. So the boy went to work at a bookstore, where he became interested in books on science.
One day young Faraday attended a lecture(讲座) given by a famous scientist, Sir Humpry Davy. Faraday took very careful notes at the lecture. Back at the bookstore he made diagrams(图表) to explain what Davy had said. Then he made the notes and diagrams into a book and sent it to the great scientist. In a letter he also told Davy that he was very interested in science.
Faraday received the excitement of his life when, on the day before Christmas in 1812, a messenger(邮递员) came to the bookstore with a note asking him to call on Davy the next day. As a result of that visit, Faraday became an assistant(助手) in Davy’s laboratory. At first, Faraday only washed chemistry glassware and kept the laboratory clean, but later he was given more important work to do. It was in Davy’s laboratory that Faraday received the training that enabled him to become one of the world’s greatest scientists.

One day, however, I nearly ended our friendship. I remember that day clearly. We were sitting in class. The teacher was giving us our results (结果) for a Chinese test. I did very badly. I felt so sad that I wouldn’t talk to anyone. At lunchtime, I even stayed in the classroom alone. Suddenly, I heard a voice. It was Vanilla. “You look very unhappy,” she said. “What’s wrong?” I looked up at her, but said nothing. I knew Vanilla had got a good mark in the test. I thought she was making fun of me. I stayed silent (沉默), but Vanilla didn’t go away. She kept asking me questions: “Is it because of the exam? Do you want me to show you the right answers?” I looked away from her. When I looked up again, Vanilla went away. And I couldn’t find my paper! I didn’t know what to do. I looked everywhere for my paper, but couldn’t find it.

At the end of last year, the school started a project that called on teachers to collect disused or broken pieces of pottery from the countryside. So far, they have collected about 3,000 pieces.
“Pottery used to play an important role in the daily lives of Chinese people,” the school head Ma Guoxin told the reporter. “By pottery painting, the students can improve themselves in many ways. They can better understand the history of the pottery, put their creativity into the pottery and show the love for life and beauty.”
Students turned the pottery into different works of art. They were all encouraged to paint pictures on the pottery, even though some students didn’t know how to paint. In March, the school held a pottery painting competition. Wang Zixuan, a student from Grade Eight, with little knowledge of painting, painted a beautiful night scenery on a piece of pottery. It was so nice that many students loved it.
Almost every classroom has colored pieces of pottery. They are either used as flowerpots or pen containers(笔筒). The school has also set up several art corners to show the pottery. Zapata began from Sangatte on France's northern coast (海岸) and touched down near Dover, England. His hoverboard was powered (提供动力) by a backpack full of fuel(燃料). It kept him in the air for 10 minutes.
Then Zapata stopped halfway on a boat to fill his backpack with fuel again. It took him just 22 minutes to finish the 35-kilometer flying. The crowd clapped loudly as they saw him reach Britain safely. Zapata said that it was the most amazing moment in his life.
The Frenchman has been working on his hoverboard for three years. He did not think of giving up after losing two of his fingers(手指) in an accident. Now he is thinking about creating a flying car. Do you look forward to it ?

In the state of Qin, there was a man called Shang Yang(商鞅). He was a statesman (政治家) and worked out many reforms(改革) for the state, like paying more attention to farming and giving rewards(报酬) to soldiers who were successful when at war.
But these reforms were not easily carried out(执行)at first. Most people didn’t trust Shang Yang. In order to solve this problem, Shang Yang came up with an idea. He put a thin wooden pole(杆) at the south gate of the Qin capital. Many people came to see him and the pole.
Then, in front of the crowd, Shang Yang said loudly, “The man who takes this pole to the north gate will get 10 gold pieces.” It was a simple job and the reward was so large. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge(向…挑战)yourself. So you can not always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转)door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
1. Those who have big houses may often feel _________.A.happy | B.lonely | C.free | D.excited |

C.You can still be a happy person even if you have little money |
D.Happiness is always around you though difficulties come towards you |

②For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired(解雇)over 1, 000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.
③However, learning music is beneficial(有益的) in many ways.
④When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
⑤Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.

It was a cross-country flight. The plane had just taken off. One passenger wanted to take his medicine. He told a flight attendant that he needed a cup of water. The flight attendant told him that she would bring him water in ten minutes.

Many Chinese mothers are afraid that their children will fall behind their classmates, so these mothers are becoming "tiger mothers". They believe the harder their children study, the happier life they will have in the future. Is it true? Lulu and her sister Sophia may have a say.
Lulu and Sophia have a "tiger mother". She pushed them a lot when they were young. For example, they were not allowed to get grades lower than A. They had to practice the piano or violin for several hours a day. There were no games or TV.
The tiger mother, Amy, is a Chinese-American professor at Yale Law School in the USA. Several years ago, she wrote a book named Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and shared her strict parenting style in it.

Sophia has just graduated from Yale University. She is hard-working, friendly and helpful. Not long ago, she shared some useful studying tips online. Lulu is also a warm, smart and popular girl in her friends' eyes. She said tiger mothers believed that a child could succeed by being pushed to go all out.
