Dear Peter, How are you? I’m fine. I have some exciting news! I have moved to a new house in the countryside of Canada. It is very nice and quiet here. The house has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a large kitchen. But I love it much better than my old house in the city. The weather is very cold here. Yesterday, I went skiing (滑雪) with my friends Tom and Payton. Tom is an excellent skier but Payton and I are still in the beginner group. We had great fun and after that, we drank hot chocolate beside an open fire. Your mum tells me that you will visit me during the summer holiday. I can’t wait to see you and show you around my new house. Which room would you like to sleep in? One of the guestrooms looks out onto (朝向) a lake, while the other one has lovely views of the woods (树林) and mountains. Can you give me a hand, please? Can you bring me some photos of Hong Kong? However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a fine tool to keep their hands warm—hand warmers.
About the origin (起源), there is no exact written record, but ★ . One folk story is about Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visiting Jiangsu in the winter. Due to the bitter cold, craftsmen (工匠) were required to make a small warmer for the emperor to hold in hand. Thus the hand warmer was created. Later in the Song Dynasty, the tool was in widespread use. Skills for producing the tool were widely employed in the Ming and Qing dynasties. And many books recorded people using hand warmers. The Dream of the Red Chamber, the classic novel by Cao Xueqin from the Qing Dynasty, described a servant sending a hand warmer to Lin Daiyu in one chapter.
Made of different materials, ancient hand warmers had lots of fine designs, such as pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The designs preferred animals or symbols with good meanings. Inside a hand warmer, there were burning charcoal (木炭) or simple coals. Some coals were blended with broken pieces and pressed into flower shapes, giving off a pleasant smell when burnt.

The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called “Veggie”, which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, the astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes (消毒纸巾) and then ate it with some salad dressing.
“It was one small bite for man, one great step for ... our journey to Mars,” one astronaut, Scott Kelly, later, posted on social media.
Space vegetables are a part of the NASA, experiment called “Veg-01”, a study on how plants grow without the effects of Earth’s gravity (重力). It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
“If we’re ever going to go to Mars someday, we’re going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable (自给自足的) in its food supply.” said Kelly.
“Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help keep astronauts alive.” NASA said.
Veg-01 started in May 2014. The first part of vegetables, took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check. After making sure they were safe to eat, astronauts planted a second part on July 8. They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it. Astronauts usually only get vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS. Now with vegetables grown in space, they can eat them whenever they want.

Raising livestock (家畜) is bad for the environment. When animals like cows digest (消化) food, their stomachs make greenhouse gases, which are a main cause of global warming. Seventeen percent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from livestock farming, the New York Times reported. In addition, to raise these livestock, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they take in greenhouse gases.
Eating less meat according to certain guidelines could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found. Keeping a vegetarian diet (素食) in the long term could bring down emissions by 63 percent.
But eating less meat won’t be easy. According to the study, people in Western countries will need to eat 90 percent less meat than they do now in order to have an influence on our climate. Scientists are now trying to find new foods to replace meat.
Some say that insects could help. A 2013 UN report said that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. They produce 75 percent less greenhouse gases than livestock.
Some experts are creating lab-grown meat. They make meat in a lab using livestock cells ( 细胞 ). In March, US company JUST said people in the US might be able to buy its lab-grown meat by the end of this year.

My husband has been working in Beijing for five months. Our 7-year-old daughter Polly missed him very much. When I told her we would visit her father, she was so excited.
We left for Beijing after Polly finished her exam. She couldn’t wait to tell her father about her good grades. The train was pretty full. Because I did not get the tickets online early, Polly and I were separated. We could not sit together. Polly was nervous about trips and depended on my reading to her. But this time it seemed impossible at all.
When the two passengers who shared my row found their seats, I asked if they could change places with Polly or me. They both refused.
At the same time, a mother and her two children several rows ahead of us also met the same problem. The mother could hold her baby, but her 6-year-old son had to sit with strangers. She was worried about her son. But nobody offered to help her.
At that very moment, I saw a group of teens. One of the teens stood up and said to the mother, “ Aunt, we can help you. ” He then rearranged their seats. Then there was space for the family to sit together. The mother was thankful to the teens.
Polly was still upset. However, I could do nothing. Suddenly, the passenger next to me, turned around and asked, “ Would you and your daughter like our seats? ” We changed seats. Being together made our trip much better.

One morning, when Einstein was holding a fishing rod and was about to go fishing with his friends, his father stopped him and said calmly, "Einstein, you're so fond of playing all day that you failed your exam. I'm worried about your future."
"What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but don't they still get to go fishing?"
"My boy, you can't think like that," his dad said. "There is a fable(寓言故事)that people tell in our hometown. Listen to it now."
"There were two cats playing on a roof. One cat got caught off guard and fell down the chimney(烟囱)while holding the other cat. When the two cats climbed out of the chimney, one of the cats had soot(烟灰)on his face, while the other cat's face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought its face must be dirty, so it quickly ran to the riverside and washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat and thought its face was also clean, so it just swaggered down the street."
"Einstein, no one can be your `mirror'. You have to think for yourself. If you take your cues from others, you will never learn."

These days, teenagers are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That's more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven't yet considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: today's teenagers lack media literacy (媒体素养). In other words, they have difficultly critically thinking about the information they see. One study that was done on middle school students showed that more than 80 percent of them couldn't tell the difference between real stories and ads that looked like news.
Standford professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor gave an example that shows why media literacy is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on (关注) the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. "With a news story. news stations tell you what they feel are the important details (细节). These details mostly depend on the opinions of the news director." said John. "A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one side at this time. There is more going on."
Some experts think shoe is the best place to teach media literacy. Other believe everyone—form parents to reporters—should help teenagers learn the skills.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts suggest the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. "It's never too early to start learning media literacy," John said.
