Jupiter(土星) is the fifth planet from the sun and it is the largest one in the solar system. It is about 11 times bigger than the earth. Jupiter's strangest thing is its huge red spot. Pictures taken from space tell us that the red spot is probably a hurricane(飓风). It is so big that the earth would fit right in the middle of it. Sometimes the hurricane looks like a huge oven with orange-red waves (波浪). Some other time the color almost disappears.
On the earth, hurricanes move. We can watch them travel across water to land. Jupiter's red spot also moves. Scientists say it “walks”. It is carried along by air in Jupiter's atmosphere(大气层).
So far, Jupiter has been visited by four spacecrafts. All of them flew by Jupiter very quickly. On the next trip to Jupiter, a spacecraft will stay near the planet much longer. New information will be sent back to the earth. Soon scientists will know much more about this strange red spot in the atmosphere.

The difference is that the workers are astronauts. They walk in space and use robots’ arms and hands to do their work.
In the space station, astronauts are comfortable. The temperature there is about 21°C. But outside the station, it can be too hot or cold for people. In the sunlight, it’s about 120°C. In the shadow(阴暗处)of the station, it’s about -85°C. So, when astronauts walk in space, they have to wear heavy clothes spacesuits.
Spacesuits also keep astronauts safe from flying rubbish(垃圾)in space. Each time people go into space, they leave rubbish there. Astronauts should be careful because there’s a lot of rubbish, and some rubbish goes many times as fast as a plane!
Space walking is not easy, and it can be dangerous. Getting ready for it takes a lot of time to learn. Astronauts will need to do 160 space walks to finish their work in the ISS. That will take about 1,900 men hours of work.

First, we have to pay more attention to our diet. Have more fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs and milk. They are good for our eyes. Besides, a regular amount of vitamin(维生素)A and B2 should also be taken.
Second, we must have a good sleep. It relaxes the eye muscles(肌肉)and gives them the rest they need. Sleep can help the body repair its tired tissue(组织). Usually, we must sleep for at least eight hours every day. Lack of sleep can bring us dark circles around the eyes.
Third, it’s necessary for us to exercise our eyes every day. Blink our eyes at regular time to make the eyeballs watery.
Last, we should use our eyes correctly. For example, if a small thing goes into the eye, don’t rub(擦)it. Rubbing is harmful to our eyes. Don’t read or write in poor or bright sunlight because sunlight can cause eye tiredness. Remember to use sunglasses to stop the sunshine from shining directly into our eyes. Too much reading, writing, watching television or working on the computer can also cause eye tiredness, so a good rest is needed.

But can plants grow on the moon? Maybe. That is according to a new study. Scientists used soil brought back from past moon missions(任务). They used it to grow plants here on Earth. It turns out, success could depend on where on the moon you do your planting.
In the 1960s and 1970s, NASA ran the Apollo program. It sent astronauts to the moon. In the new study, scientists used soil that astronauts collected there.
Scientists put this soil in little cups. Each cup got about a teaspoon of lunar soil. Other cups got Earth soil. The scientists planted seeds. They watered the soil. They put the cups under growth lights.
In the Earth soil, plants sprouted healthy leaves. Moon soil sprouted leaves too. But those plants were smaller. And they were less healthy. The older the moon soil, the worse the plants grew.
Stephen Elardo is one of the scientists. He says it still might be possible to grow plants on the moon. The key(关键) could be finding the right spot. One example may be where volcanoes(火山) once broken. The soil is newer there. Scientists still have much to learn. But this study brings humans one step closer to calling the moon home.

A doctor called Jack Todd is very interested in cleaning water as well as saving money, so he has tried many ways, and in the end he developed a small and affordable system to clean waste water—the Living Machine. The machine can clean waste water in our homes or in our business.
The machine can clean waste water. First the waste water goes into a big plastic tank. In the tank, the wastes start to break down. Second, a few days later, the water is brought into a greenhouse full of plants and fish. With the help of sunlight, plants and animals, many chemicals can be removed from the water. That makes the water cleaner. Then the water can be used for washing or bathing. Though it can’t be used for drinking or cooking, the water is clean enough to water the flowers, wash the dogs and bathe.
This technology is good for the environment. It can also help to save fresh water and it can help provide the unpolluted water. If we take actions to do something to save energy on the earth, our planet will have a longer life and our life will be better.

Taken as a whole, Earth is mainly blue. That is because of the amount (数量) of water it has that covers the surface.
So, how much of Earth is water? About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered in water. Of that 71%, the oceans hold 96.5% of the water. This water found in oceans is all salt water. The remaining 3.5% of the water is fresh water, which can be found in lakes, rivers, glaciers (冰川), and in the ground. Fresh water is what people use for farming, raising animals, drinking, and daily activities such as taking showers and washing clothes or dishes.
Does the amount of water stay the same? For the most part, yes. Water on Earth is part of a closed system (系统). That is, water is always moving and changing forms between ice, liquid, and gas. The form of the water changes all the time, but the total amount of water on Earth remains the same.
If Earth is not necessarily running out of water, why are people worried? Why do we need to think about saving water? First, humans can only use fresh water, which is only 3.5% of all of Earth’s water. Second, of this 3.5%, only 1% is available for human use. Most fresh water is found in glaciers far from where anyone lives. Third, the amount of water that is useful for humans is being used faster than it can be cleaned and put back into the environment.
Now, knowing the facts about water, it is our job to make sure we use Earth’s water in a good way.

Visiting one’s home.
When visiting American homes, the house owners do not like guests to see here and there in their house. While Chinese like to walk around the house and see every room and this often raises a friendly topic to talk about.
Giving presents.
In America, visitors usually take only a bottle of wine for gift because the host will drink the wine brought by the visitors. If the visitor takes two bottles of wine, it means the visitor thinks that one bottle of wine is not enough for the host. But Chinese people like to send gifts in pairs. First, this is to show that the visitor is not a mean person. Second ,even numbers are seen as good in Chinese culture. When receiving gifts, westerners want you to open the gift in front of him and give some praise. While for Chinese, in order to show that the receiver is a polite person, he should put the gift away quietly and open the gift after the guest leaves.
Expressing thanks.
Americans are used to saying thanks to family members or friends for their help. However, Chinese people believe that they do not have to say “thank you” to family members or friends as this seems to alienate their relations.

WAY 1: Bring your own cup to Starbucks. You’ll get a 10-cent discount, and it’s one less paper cup to end up in a dustbin. The store won’t create more waste when they throw away a cup.
WAY 2: Turn off your computer. When in standby mode, your PC is still using energy. Turning off a monitor (显示器) for 40 hours a week may only save $ 5 a month, but it reduces CO2 by 750 pounds.
WAY 3: Reuse plastic bags. Instead of throwing away 100 billion plastic bags a year, try and get a second, third, or tenth use out of them. Better yet, next time you shop, try a reusable bag. The amount of oil it would take to make just 14 plastic bags would run your car for one mile.
WAY 4: Use recycled paper in the bathroom. Most of the toilet paper we use is made from trees found in forests. If every family replaced(替换)one roll of toilet paper with a recycled one, 424,000 trees would still be standing.
WAY 5: Plant a tree. Adding green to your garden is beautiful and earth-pleasing. Just one tree will help make cleaner air and save the environment from 5, 000 pounds of hot carbon dioxide each year.

【推荐2】Upcycling is the process of changing old materials into something useful and often beautiful. It is different from recycling. When you recycle something, old materials need to be broken down so that their base materials can be remade into a new product, often of inferior(次等的)quality. When you upcycle an object, you aren’t breaking down the material. You’re simply making it into something else. Also, the upcycled object is typically of the same, or even better quality.
The idea of upcycling isn’t new. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the 1930s to 1940s when people didn’t have many material resources(资源). In those days, people found new purposes for old things over and over until they were no longer useful. For example, old coats would be turned into shoes and an old door would be made into a new table.
Nowadays, saving is still a big reason why some people upcycle. An even bigger reason for the rebirth of upcycling is that it’s environmentally-friendly. Things shouldn’t just be thrown away when they can be turned into something useful. Upcycling is also more environmentally-friendly than recycling which requires energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling just requires your own creativity and effort.
Upcycling can provide you with something that’s both creative and practical. Why don’t you support the idea by checking your house or recycling bin and creating objects yourself? Take action right now!

Understanding how the brain works helps us see a connection between language development and non-verbal signs. “Gorillas have many kinds of non-verbal communication” said psychologist Sebastian Forrester, from the University of Sussex. He thinks humans may have had the same communication skills.
Non-verbal communication includes the ways we move our bodies and the different expressions on our faces. A new study on gorillas showed that right-handedness may have a connection with communication. The right side of the body is controlled by the left part of the brain, which is also where language develops.
Two cameras were used to watch how one gorilla moved. It was shown that gorillas use their right hands more when they are doing actions with their heads or mouths at the same time. This may show that there is a connection between how our brains work and the reason we use one side of our body more than the other.
Forrester said the results could help us understand how children learn languages. For example, some children have a condition called autism (自闭症) in which they have a hard time communicating with other people. This same kind of study may help doctors find autism in children at an earlier age.
