I remembered I had a gun if I needed it, and turned back towards this man of the island. He was hiding behind another tree but stepped out to meet me.
“Who are you?” I asked, staring at him.
“Ben Gunn”, he answered, and his voice sounded rough and strange. His skin was burnt nearly black by the sun and his clothes were made from pieces of a ship's sail. “Poor Ben Gunn, he went on.” Alone for three years.
“Were you shipwrecked(船遇难)?” I asked.
“No, my friend”, he said. “Marooned.”
I had heard the word before, and knew it meant cruel(残忍的) punishment often used by pirates-leaving a man alone on some distant, empty island.
“Marooned for three years,” he continued, “living on wild goats and fish. But I'm in great need for real English food back home. You don't have a piece of cheese, do you? Many nights I've dreamed of cheese.”
He continued. “Well, tell me your name.”
“Jim,” I told him.
“Well, Jim”, he said, looking around and lowering his voice to a whisper, “I'm rich”. I was now sure the poor man was crazy, but he repeated his words. “Rich, I say! Now, Jim, that isn't Flint's ship, is it?”
I began to think that I had found a friend, and I answered him at once. “It's not Flint's ship any more. Flint is dead, but there are still some of Flint's men aboard, and that's bad news for us.”
“A man with one leg?” he asked, fear in his voice.
“Silver?” I asked.
“Yes, Silver,” he said, “that was his name.”
“He's the cook, and their leader too. And told him the fight between Flint and the cook, and the danger we were now in.”
“You're in trouble, Jim,” he said when I'd finished. “Well, Ben Gunn will help you. Will your squire(乡绅) be generous if do, do you think? I don' t want him to give me a job, but will he give me one thousand pounds out of money that's really mine?”
“I'm sure he will,” I said.

He realized that the dog beside him had been dead for years and so had his horse. He wondered what was happening, and where the road was leading them.
After a while, they saw a tall arch topped by golden letter "H" and a gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl. The street that led to the gate looked like gold.
He rode toward the gate and saw a man at a desk. Thirsty and tired out by his journey, he called out," Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the cowboy asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water for you."
"Can I bring my partners, too?"
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued riding, his dog running by his side.
After another long ride, he came to a dirt road leading through a gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he went closer to the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. “Excuse me,” he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"
"Sure, there's a pump right over there. Help yourself."
"How about my friends here?" the cowboy pointed at the dog and his horse.
"Of course! They look thirsty, too," said the man.
The three went through the gate and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets(水桶)beside it. The cowboy took a long drink, as did his horse and dog. "What do you call this place?" the cowboy asked the man who was still standing by the tree.
"This is Heaven," he answered.
"That's strange," the cowboy said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the shinning, gold street and fake pearly gates? That's Hell." "Doesn't it make you angry when they use your name like that?"
"Not at all. Actually, we’re happy they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

In my slightly shaking hand, I held the script On Patrol. “For this scene,” I explained, “all I need you to do is walk quietly.” In front of the camera was my best friend, Gavin, wearing a blue uniform. “Would it be funnier if I looked into the camera?” Gavin suggested. “Hmm.” I said. “Yeah, you’re right. Let’s do it that way.” This was certainly not a Hollywood blockbuster. I didn’t have a producer, a script director, or even something as simple as a light setup. The only equipment (设备) I had was my camera and my tripod (三脚架), but they were enough to make my dream come true. “Okay, are you good?” I asked. Gavin nodded his head. “Okay. Action!” I said.
Since my preschool years, movies have been my life. Some people may think back to their childhood as they hear the sound of table tennis or see a baseball flying into the blue sky during a backyard game, Some people may smell the salty air of the ocean during a family vacation. As for me, I hear the sound of the video recorder, as it replays the tape of a video. The movie I watched most as a child was Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. From then on, I watched as many movies as I could. When I began high school, I was wondering what I should choose as a job. After months of not having any idea of what I would become, an idea appeared: if I love movies so much, why not make it a career? I began to write my first short film, On Patrol, a ten-minute silent video about a hall monitor trying to stop someone from throwing rubbish at a school. After I finished my first script, I was very excited. Then I was thinking, “Now it is up to me to make my first movie.”
It was not a famous movie, but it was my step-ping-stone. Now looking back at On Patrol still gives me a dream that could direct more good movies. Watching my first movie not only gives me a laugh, but also gives me the encouragement to continue running after a love I have had since I put Spider-Man into my video recorder many years ago.

Biggie Burger, a new fast food restaurant, will soon be opened in the town. A large group of kids and parents were holding signs shouting outside it yesterday. They were there because hey didn't want the restaurant to open. Never!
“This kind of food is really bad for us!” said Diana,” It’s high in salt, fat, and sugar. it’s unhealthy and we are going to say ’no’ to it!”
“Our town has been a quiet place. Restaurants like this bring people and also a lot of trouble to this area,” said Barbara.” And I’m afraid they will take business away form our local restaurants.”
Other local people disagree .The officials believe that Biggie Burger will bring in huge amounts of money to help improve the town. And 17-year-old Sandy can’t wait for Biggie Burger to open.” I love their hamburgers and fried chicken wings! And I can get a job there.”
Sandy’s dad, a cleaner, agrees,” Biggie Burger’s prices are just right for a family like ours.”
Michael, who owns a toy shop next door to Biggie Burger, is excited, too.” Maybe people who come for a Biggie Burger will spend a few minutes in my store and pick up something.”

The team applied a specially developed set of rules to laser-ranging telescopes, which enabled them to identify space junk more effectively than previous techniques. “After improving the pointing accuracy of the telescope through a neural network(神经网络), space debris with a cross sectional area of one square meter at a distance of 1500 kilometers can be detected,” Tianming Ma, an author of the study from the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping, said in a statement.
According to NASA, orbital debris is any man-made object in orbit around the Earth that no longer serves a useful function. Debris can include non-functional spacecraft, abandoned launch vehicle stages, and other mission-related space junk. It poses a significant risk to astronauts and spacecraft in orbit above the Earth as it travels very fast—up to 18,000 miles per hour, which is faster than a bullet. Worryingly, there are estimated to be many millions of tiny debris pieces in low-Earth orbit, and tens of thousands times larger than a softball, the space agency said. Fortunately, there have been surprisingly few collisions.
In the study, Ma and his team used two different neural networks to help identify space debris with the laser-ranging telescope. They then tested this method against more traditional techniques. According to the team, this is the first time that neural networks have been used to significantly improve the pointing accuracy of a laser-ranging telescope. They say the latest findings could have significant implications for manoeuvring spacecraft in orbit.
Laser-ranging technology has previously been used to detect space junk. However, these systems have limitations when it comes to accurately identifying small, fast-moving pieces. In fact, previous laser-ranging methods have only been accurate to about 0.6 miles. In an attempt to overcome the inaccuracies of laser-ranging techniques, the Chinese team used so-called neural networks to improve the effectiveness of their telescope system. Neural networks are computing systems which are inspired by biological networks in the brain and have the ability to learn to become better at tasks without being given a specific set of rules to follow.
1. How have Chinese scientists made progress in identifying space debris?A.By improving the accuracy of laser technology. |
B.By adopting newly developed telescope systems. |
C.By upgrading the advanced traditional technology. |
D.By applying neural networks to laser-ranging telescopes. |

A.To add some background information. | B.To provide some advice for scientists. |
C.To summarize the previous paragraphs. | D.To introduce a new topic for discussion. |
A.They can speed up computing systems. |
B.They can learn to perform better independently. |
C.They can detect space junk in low-Earth orbit. |
D.They can perform tasks accurately under a set of rules. |
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and put them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to be full of coins. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized(辨认出) his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.”
What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.”
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first one simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. However, the second one told people that they were able to enjoy the day. It told them they were lucky and they were not blind.
There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story.
The first is: Be thankful for what you have. Someone else has less. Help whenever you can.
The second is: Think differently. There is always a better way!

An urban legend is my modern story, usually fictional, but which is told as if it really happened. These legends are passed from person to person and reach a wide audience. A lot of them are inspired by a real event but the story changes as it is passed on. Although most legends are false, some turn out to be true. Here are some examples. Do you think they are true or false?
Unlucky
A student had not done his homework. The day before the essay was due in, he went to the university library and found an old essay written on the same subject. He simply copied it, typed it up and handed it in. A few weeks later, the teacher was handing the essays back to the class. She stopped by the student’s desk and said, “Twenty-five years ago, when I wrote this essay, it got a B, __________” She set the essay on the student’s desk, and there on the cover was a big A! The teacher continued, “If you try anything like this again, I’ll have you thrown out of school.”
Caught on film
A young couple were married. The bride’s father gave them a lavish wedding and took a large wad of cash to pay people like the band, bartender, waiters, etc. At one point, the father took off his jacket to dance. When he later retrieved it, he discovered that the money was missing. A couple of weeks later, the entire family gathered to watch the video of the wedding. At one point, the groom’s father, unbeknown to him, could be seen in the background taking the money from the bride’s father’s coat! Of course this created a scandal(丑闻) and the marriage was immediately declared invalid.
Confusing packaging
The packaging of consumer products, a convenience so familiar to Americans, can be confusing to a foreign visitor. I was lunching in the college cafeteria one afternoon with a young student from overseas. Noticing that he had torn open his tea bag and emptied his contents into his cup, I explained that the bag itself was meant to be dipped, unopened, into the water. A bit surprised, he thanked me graciously for correcting him – and then confidently dropped an unopened envelope of sugar into his tea.

2.are told as if they are true
3. are always false
4.are modern
5. are known by lots of people
