In 2017, Bob Charland was diagnosed (诊断) with a brain cancer. The doctor said there was nothing they could do to stop the illness, and finally it would take his life. Most people in the situation would travel around the world and choose to forget what they were experiencing, but Bob decided to bring greater meaning to the rest of his life by doing something special for children need. When Bob received a call from a teacher it began. The teacher asked him if he could donate (捐赠) some used bikes. Sure he could. Since then, Bob has donated about 1,000 bikes. He did this through the organization he created, Pedal Thru Youth. He spent over 10,000 dollars of his own money on it.
Most of the children Bob brought bikes to lived in high-crime neighborhoods, so he also provided safety lessons to help protect them. Now he is known in some neighborhoods as "Bob the Bike Guy". "To spend time with kids and see their smiles is an amazing feeling," said Bob. "Sometimes for the first time in a long time, they see that somebody cares."
In addition, Bob recently began a backpack program. He offers basic necessities (必需品), including hats and gloves to homeless people. Some students help Bob with his backpack program. Although they don't have much, it's important for them to do what they can. That is exactly the influence Bob hopes to have, and he will go on repairing and donating bikes.
"My brain will continue to get worse and at some point, I will die," he said. "But I'm not there yet. Why not continue doing what I love?"

She is also the town secretary, the town treasurer, the librarian, and she works in the café. Why has she got a lot of different jobs? Because there’s nobody else to do them. Monowi has got a population of one — Elsie.
Monowi is an unusual sight. There are about twelve old wooden houses there. They are all empty and are surrounded by a few trees, several old cars and lots of rubbish. The town is silent. Three years ago, the last people that lived there, except Elsie’s family, moved away. Then, Elsie’s husband died, and then her son and daughter left to find work in bigger towns, leaving Elsie the only person in the town.

I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation, but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team. I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Talking to strangers was one of my fears. But I gathered my courage and did it. I talked to the students, the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills.
In journalism, everything has to be based on facts. As a student journalist. I have learned to do research and to think critically about what I read. Discovering the facts is important when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an increasingly useful skill in everyday life.
As a student journalist, I always know that I have a lot to learn. I’m never afraid of asking people for feedback (反馈意见). I have learned how not to take negative feedback personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.
Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. If you are ever given a chance to write for a campus newspaper or magazine, take it and learn everything you can!

A few years ago in New Jersey, a man with a gun killed 13 people. Armed police surrounded his house but he refused to come out. A reporter found out the phone number of the house and called. The man put down his gun and answered the phone. “What do you want?” he said, “I’m really busy right now.”
Imagine you’re at work and the phone is ringing in someone else’s office. Do you answer it or not? In one survey on telephone use, 51% of participants(参与者) told researchers that they did. We can’t ignore the phone and for that reason, it forces its way into our lives. It interrupts(打扰) what we are doing and on top of that, the caller is often someone we don’t really want to talk to. However, in the survey, 58% said they never turned off the phone, and 67% didn’t mind if someone called during a television program. For 44% it wasn’t a problem if someone rang during a meal, while only 28% were angry. Dear Aunt Aggie, I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded (无意间转发) the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad. How do I get Rena to forgive (原谅) me? What should I do? Joe |
Dear Joe, This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” And good luck! Aggie |

B.Joe received a wrong email from Rena and became angry. |

B.Because you never know where the message is from. |
C.Because you don’t know where your email was written. |
D.Because you can never know who will get your email at last. |
A.Joe, Rena and Beth study at different schools | B.Beth didn’t forward the message to Rena |
C.Joe has already said sorry to Rena | D.Rena hasn’t forgiven Joe yet |

But besides the feeling of being tired and bored, I think most people will feel thirsty (口渴的) soon. You feel better right away after you drink some water. Your body needs water, so it tells you to drink. It's easy, right?
However, it's not that easy. There is a special part in your brain (大脑). When your blood (血) is too salty (咸的), it says, "Drink!" After you drink, it is quiet. Water does not go into your blood right away. However, your brain still know that you have drunk water. How? When you swallow fast, your brain knows and thinks you are drinking water.
Maybe you drink cola but not water, but your brain will still be quiet. It will still think you are drinking water. You will stop feeling thirsty. But in fact, cola is not good when you feel thirsty. You should just drink water because your body needs it most.
How much water should you drink each day? Doctors think differently. Some doctors ask us to drink eight cups of water every day, but other doctors say that's too much.
On a hot day, you lose a lot of water. Maybe you should drink more. Every person's body has different needs.
