There are a lot of strange holidays. Some of these holidays are consumer-oriented (以消费者为导向的). One example is International Coffee Day. It is held on September 29. Another is World Pizza Day. It is held on February 9. Some holidays are meant to spread awareness (意识) of something. And one example is World Elephant Day. It is held on August 12. Another holiday is World Cancer Day. It is on February 4.
Some holidays are created just for a laugh. Have you heard of Frog Jumping Day? It is held on May 13. Another funny holiday is I Forgot Day. It is on July 2.
So where did all of these days come from? Christmas is a national holiday. So is Thanksgiving. Creating holidays like these takes some doing (费尽周折). But anyone can create a random (随意的) holiday.
Tom Roy is a radio host. He has created around 80 holidays. These holidays include Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbors Day. It also includes Blah Blah Blah Day.
There doesn’t have to be a reason (理由) to create holidays. That’s what Roy explained. He said it’s all just for fun.
“It doesn’t cost anything to celebrate them. That’s the cool thing.”
What holiday would you create?

The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business (生意) made me feel proud (骄傲) and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said seriously, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I still value(珍视) it , which my father gave to me that day. It will always be helpful to impress (给……留下印象) the person you are working for.
After two years, I left home and went to another town to start my new life. Luckily for me, I quickly found a job to wash dishes in a restaurant. Every morning, I set off early, always with the same strong wish I got long long ago. I felt like I was old enough to be independent and make a living by myself.
In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than I had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you only think about hard work and money, 58 ” I answered.

【推荐2】Cooking shows on TV are usually all about exotic(外来的)foods. Thanks to globalization, people everywhere are introducing their taste foods to dishes from every corner of the world. At the same time, other people are discovering that food from their areas is the best kept secret. In the past few years, this movement(运动)of buying local produce keeps picking up steam because it offers a lot of benefits.
For starters, local food is often tastier because it is fresher. Goods that are imported(进口)from abroad must be grown or shipped from far away, so they naturally lose some of their freshness during the journey. A simple way to test this is to compare a banana from overseas with one that was grown locally and taste. Imported goods must also be washed and packaged in plastic or other containers so they can be stored well during the journey. These materials may cause the nutritional value of these goods to decline(下降)during the shipping process. Food safety is another reason why people are choosing local produce. Today's laws on foods are different from country to country. This causes confusion and makes it difficult to check if any harmful pesticides(农药)were used. When you know the local farmer who grows your food and the fields that are used to produce it, the chances of being polluted are greatly reduced.
Buying local foods can also have a beneficial influence on the environment. By supporting local growers , consumers(消费者)can keep green space and farmland in their communities in good condition. Buying local also helps to build the local community. If farmers can sell directly to consumers instead of middlemen, they will earn more money for their families. Additional profits(利润)also make farmers care for their soil and keep quality standards high. In the end, it's a win-win situation for both parties.
If you are interested in increasing more local foods into your diet, you can start by attending a farmers' market in your area. This is an open market where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, and meat directly to the public. If you have any questions about the production process or quality of these goods, you can ask the farmers directly. Once you experience the freshness of local foods for yourself, it might be difficult to go back to the supermarket.
1. Why does the writer encourage us to buy local foods in the passage?A.They look fresher and do less harm to our health. |

C.They are strictly checked before coming into the markets. |

When you choose leaves for your samples, try to choose leaves of about the same size and shape on the tree. Make sure you collect the entire(完整的)leaves.
Remember, some leaves have only one blade(叶片)or leaflet(小叶). Some leaves have a few or many leaflets. You must know these two kinds of leaves. Good leaf collectionscontainthe entire leaves.
You should dry the collected leaves carefully before putting them in a leaf press(压). When you collect leaves in the field, you can put them between the pages of a book to protect them.
