The world is filled with movies about technology, but none of them could have been created without AI (Artificial Intelligence人工智能). It seems AI is everywhere and makes our life more interesting.
Chongqing is quickly becoming a leader in Artificial Intelligence. People can spend several days experiencing the latest and greatest AI toys at the Smart China Expo(智博会) . Chongqing people are most proud of the Smart China Expo in Chongqing in 2018. For example Lijia wisdom garden in Chongqing is a place where people can deeply experience artificial intelligence. There are driverless cars for adults, robot dogs to entertain children, and music robots that sing songs with teenagers. In 2019, Chongqing Gaoxin District has started building the city's largest three-dimensional( 立体的) parking building. Everyone can park their car there very quickly.
Artificial intelligence is the new rising sun in Chongqing.
Why do I say so? First, many people come to Chongqing because of the Smart China Expo. When Chongqing has more tourists, people here can make more money. Second, AI makes people in life and work get simple and convenient experience, from carrying large bags to holding your cell phone calmly, from always doing housework at home to now waiting for the floor-sweeping robot to serve you. Everything is so fantastic.
Artificial intelligence is double-edged- sword(双刃剑). Some people always worry that it will become the boss of humans, and we may lose everything in the end. But I always have a positive mind that when humans use high technology to make a new thing, we must be smarter than it.

【推荐1】The power of the wind
Light winds help us fly kites in spring and cool us in summer. Strong winds take away people’s lives. Winds can be friendly or dangerous. They can also work for us.
Wind power is not new. Five thousand years ago, the Chinese first used windmills(风车). In 700 A.D., the Syrians and Persians used them too. In the seventeenth century, the people of the Netherlands built windmills to get seawater. Now we can use the wind to make electricity.
In many countries, wind turbines(风力发电机)are everywhere. A group of turbines is called a wind farm.
Wind energy has several advantages. One advantage is that there will always be wind. Wind power is also clean. It doesn’t make air pollution. Farmers like wind power because electric companies pay them to use their land. And they can still grow crops and keep animals on their farms.
Wind power also has some disadvantages. One is that turbines are expensive, although the cost has gone down these years. A second disadvantage is noise pollution. This was a greater problem in the past. Today, if you stand under a turbine, you hear only a soft sound. You won’t hear turbines at all 100 meters away. For some people, a third disadvantage is visual(视觉的)pollution, but other people like to see turbines turning together.
Today, wind power is growing fast. A lot of countries get their energy from wind. Denmark gets 20% of its energy from wind. China is going to get 26% of its energy from wind in 2030. Perhaps one day, all countries will use this safe, clean energy to make electricity.
1. China is going to get 26% of its energy from wind ________.A.in 2020 | B.in 2030 | C.in 2040 | D.in 2050 |
A.2. | B.3. | C.4. | D.5. |
A.The cost of wind turbines is getting lower. |
B.You won’t hear the sound of turbines at all. |
C.Wind energy causes visual pollution badly. |
D.Every country makes good use of wind energy. |
Can you fold your phone screen? Huawei’s newest phone, the Mate X, makes it possible. You can fold it in half. It seems that you are closing a book.
The Mate X is both a phone and a tablet (平板电脑). When you fold it, it can work as a phone. When you open it, it is just 5.4 mm thick, and when you close it, it is just 11 mm. The Mate X is Huawei’s first mobile phone to support (支持) 5 G technology. With it, you can download (下载) a whole movie in just a few seconds. That also makes Huawei one of the world’s leaders in 5G technology. But the Mate X is very expensive. You have to pay at least 17,492 yuan if you want to get one.

If you’ve ever travelled with others, you may find it’s hard to have fun. When you want to get up early to watch the sunrise, your friends may think that getting enough sleep is more important. And when you want to try the local (当地的) food, your friends might think it’s a bad idea and take you to a Chinese restaurant.
So, you see, travelling with others may stop you from doing what you want to do. This is probably why more people these days prefer to ________.
In fact, travelling alone is only a part of a recent trend (趋势) of people wanting to take more time alone -or what’s called “me time”.
“Me time” refers to time taken just for yourself. It’s also called “alone time”. Many people feel that in their daily lives, they are always giving their time to others so that they spend little or no time on themselves. “Me time” solves this problem by giving them time to spend on activities they enjoy. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, once wrote about how she enjoyed having her “me time”. “I often take myself to dinner and travel alone. It’s not easy. But it’s important,” she wrote.

Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger. Why should people care? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers' stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice, with no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied quickly. Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

But after I went to school in the US, I found that not all these things were true. Let’s have a look at a day at my school.
1. Get up at 6 am for school.
2. Go to class. Many students take classes higher than their grade. There are lots of rules in schools. Sometimes, you can’t even use nicknames (绰号).
3. School is over. There is little homework, but there is more to do than that. Students have a lot of after-school activities to do, such as swimming, golf, art, and many more. In China, many students do after-school activities just once a week. But US students do them for some hours a day, every day of the week.
Students in the US might have more free time than those in China, but they are hard workers too.

Shanghai heat
You can’t find a “hotter” city than Shanghai this summer, and it’s not just because of the weather. By August 14, over 40 million people had visited the Shanghai World Expo. Among the visitors were many students from all over the country. The Expo was their top choice for a summer holiday. What impressed (使……印象深刻) them at the Expo? Which pavilion (场馆) was their favorite? Four students share their stories.
Wang Feibai, 14, Beijing:
My favorite pavilion was the SAIC-GM Pavilion(汽车馆). With a 3D movie, it showed us what cars will be like in 20 years: they will not use oil, they will avoid (避免) accidents, and we will be able to park our future cars on balconies (阳台)!
I was a keen collector of Expo passport (护照) stamps. My four passports have now become a reminder (提示) of my unforgettable Expo tour.
Wang Yuze, 12, Beijing:
I loved China’s Joint Provincial Pavilions (各省联合馆). Each of the small pavilions is a different style. They clearly show the characteristics (特点) of provinces in China. For example, the Jiangxi Pavilion looks just like a big porcelain bowl (瓷碗).
Ni Yunwen, 13, Shanghai:
My favorite is the US Pavilion. I love the 4D movie, The Garden. It tells a touching (感人的) story about people in the city. Besides, I felt glad to be an Expo volunteer (志愿者). Though I was tired, I enjoyed the work.
Chen Luyun, 14, Tiantai, Zhejiang:
The Saudi Arabia (沙特阿拉伯) Pavilion is my favorite. To enter the “Moon Boat”, I waited for more than five hours. There were just so many people! But when I got into the pavilion, I found that the wait was worthwhile (值得的). It was amazing to watch 3D movies in the IMAX theater.

Born into a medical family, Li began to read some medical classics, and sometimes went together with his father treating diseases when he was a child. But at that time, people looked down upon doctors, so his father didn't hope the son would take medicine as his career, and asked him to take the road of imperial examinations (科举). For that purpose, he took Gu Riyan as his teacher, who had a lot of books in his home so that Li had a chance to read many rare classics.
At the age of 17, 20 and 23, he went to take the country examination, but failed each time. Then he gave up the imperial examination and followed his father to learn medicine. He not only took in experience from others in medical treatment but also showed great talents in creativity. Li was highly praised for his sympathy for the patients and finest medical skills in just a few years. Especially, with his curing of a strange disease called "Worm addiction", he was titled "Fengcizheng" and then employed as "Yuanpan". However, he was not interested in it, and left after working only for a little more than one year.
In his medical practice, Li found many mistakes in the books of medicines. Feeling it was a great problem, he decided to write a new book on medicines all over again. From the age of 34, he started this project. In addition to summing-up of earlier people's experience and achievement, he also learned widely from medical farmers, fishermen and other laboring people. At the age of eight, Joey ran around with the children in his neighborhood. His mother never told him that he wouldn’t be able to run as fast as the other children. So he didn’t know.
In the seventh grade, he decided to try out for a runner on his school team. He ran more than any of the others in order to be chosen. 【推荐3】Need to buy something? Why go to a store? Buy it on the internet! Need it now? Why wait? Ask for next-day delivery! Each day, more and more people try online shopping. In fact, online sales have doubled in the last ten years. But not everyone is excited. Some scientists now say that online shopping is bad for the environment.
People are surprised to hear this. “They think, I don’t need to drive, and the business doesn’t need to build a store, so there will be less pollution,” says Nuria Prost, an environmental scientist. “But it is not so simple. In fact, online shopping is wasteful. It also adds to air pollution.”
In truth, the Internet is not always as good a friend to the environment as it seems. For example, most people thought that the internet would help offices use less paper and other materials. But paper use increased by 33% between 1986 and 1997. “Online shopping could have similarly negative effects,” says Nevil Cohen, a professor of environmental science. Part of the problem is what people are buying these days. In the past, people bought things on the internet that did not require much packing material, such as books and clothing. But now people also shop online for large, heavy products such as televisions, computers, and furniture. These products need to be packed in large amount of plastic and paper. This creates a lot of waste.
Another problem caused by online shopping is air pollution. When customers buy products and ask for next-day delivery, companies often have to send them by air. Airplanes use much more fuel than cars and produce more car dioxide(CO2). When people buy a lot of different things from different online businesses, this creates even more travel by airplane.
Online product returns are also a problem. For example, an online shoe store may allow customers to return shoes without extra pay if they are the wrong size. This doubles the packing material and number airplane trips required to sell one pair of shoes.
“If people want to protect the environment, they need to think before they shop,” says Prost. “People need to ask themselves: Is this exactly what I want? Do I really need it tomorrow, or can I wait?” Online stores can also ask customers to pay money for returns. This may make people shop more carefully. “Online shopping is fast and easy,” says Prost, “but we can’t forget the negative effects it has on the environment.”
