Millions of people in China are taking part in live-streaming(直播) quiz shows after they download apps like Chongdingdahui, Huajiao Zhibo and Xigua Shipin. Different from TV quiz shows, anybody with a smartphone can take part in the shows every day, interacting(互动) with other players at the same time.
The shows have hosts to present the questions and make the show more lively by telling jokes or giving some background for the questions. Players can win prizes as small as 1 yuan and as high as more than 40,000 yuan, depending on the total amount(数量) of prize money and the number of winners.
To draw new users, the apps offer "redo cards(复活卡)" to new players, as well as to those who have invited new players to join. These cards allow players who give wrong answers an extra chance to compete on the show.
Players are enjoying turning their knowledge into a chance to win cash prizes. They have also found that they are learning a lot during the process. "I found them really attractive, as I can learn and play at the same time," said Cao Lei, a 25-year-old user player from Beijing." These are all free apps and I stand to win some money. Why not try them out?" It's not just the questions—and the joy of winning—that have drawn users. The players may have a proud feeling to continue the game when watching hundreds of thousands of others have to get out of the competition.

The rules for this game are quite easy. To begin with, put the ten jacks on the floor or ground in front of you. Toss the ball high, pick up one jack and then catch the ball. Keep the jack in your hand and go on to pick up the other jack one at a time. You lose your turn if you do not catch the ball, or if you do not pick up a jack, or if you drop (掉) any of the jacks from your hand.
When you finish all the ten jacks, you now try to do the same thing again but with two jacks at one time. This is more difficult, of course. You lose your turn if you make any of the above three mistakes (错误) or if you do not pick up two jacks each time.

Li Ming is a 13-year-old student in Shanghai. Since last May, he has spent most of his spare time on King of Glory. "Every boy in my class is playing it, "he said. "Good players are respected."
King of Glory has been a very popular mobile game in China. It has had 50 million daily users. Unlike other games, King of Glory names all of its characters after figures from China's history. "All of them look very cool," said Li. His favorite hero is Jing Ke. "She’s very pretty, "the boy added.

Tetris (俄罗斯方块) is one of the most popular video games of all time. Have you ever wondered who invented it? The game was created by a computer engineer named Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. He was inspired (启发) by his favorite board game Pentomino and he invented the game just for fun.
The game became popular almost as soon as it hit the market. The Tetris Company was set up in 1996. As a basic computer game, Tetris quickly spread to other platforms. It was one of the most often played games on Nintendo’s Game Boy.

Have you ever wished to have an umbrella that makes your hands free? Alan Kaufman has come up with the “Numbrella”, which means “new” + “umbrella”. It is the first truly hands-free umbrella in the world. The inventor says that it stops rain, wind and snow and can keep your head, face and hair dry.
“I never planned to invent a product. I just noticed(注意到) a problem and had a new “solution,” said the inventor. The idea for the invention began on one rainy day. Mr. Kaufman was standing in one of his stores. He began to look at people’s umbrellas. He found that they had to try very hard to keep their umbrellas in the right place. At that moment an idea came into his mind. He ran to his desk and drew a picture. In this way, the Numbrella was born.
One cool feature of the Numbrella is that you don’t hold it like a normal umbrella, you wear it. The shoulder straps (肩带) of the Numbrella allow people to be fully hands-free, so when walking in the rain with the Numbrella, you are able to use your cell phone or drink a hot cup of coffee. Long ago, people did not need money. They lived on wild animals, fruits and other plants. As time passed, people learned to raise animals and crops. Sometimes, families produced more than they needed, so they started to trade with other families. Later, people began to use money as a means of exchange. However, it was not the kind of money we use today. They used shells, rice, salt, large stones, etc.
During the 600s BC, people began using coins as money. They soon found that coins were easier to carry than goods and lasted a long time. Later, countries began to make their won coins. The Chinese were the first to use paper money, probably as early as the 11th century. The Italian traveler Marco Polo saw the Chinese using money when he visited China in the 1200s. However, European countries did not start using paper money until 1600s.
Today, we have many ways to pay for things. We do not use coins or paper money. Often, people prefer to pay for things by card and all kinds of apps on a smart phone. Paying is easier and safer than carrying around a lot of “real” money.

Some people ski (滑雪) down mountains. Others climb huge rocks or photograph dangerous animals. Why do people enjoy risky activities like these?
Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good. Psychologist (心理学家) Marvin says that this kind of explorers (探险者) are always looking for change and excitement. When people do something new or risky, a chemical (化学物质) in the brain creates a pleasant feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience it as often as possible.
Other people don't take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve a goal. For example, Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000—mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the wildlife there. Fay’s expeditions helped create 13 national parks.
For other people, such as extreme athletes (极限运动员), taking risks is part of their job. Sports psychologist Shane says extreme athletes see the world differently. In a dangerous activity, most people probably do not feel in control. Extreme athletes are different: they feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, skier Daron Rahlves says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed.
Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers. However, we still take risks in our lives. Some of us take social risks, such as speaking in front of a large group of people. Sometimes, we take financial risks, such as buying a house. And sometimes we take career risks, such as leaving a job or starting a business. Most people take risks in some areas of life, but not in others. What kind of risk—taker are you?

One family once had an accident. A big fish swam under their boat and bit holes(洞) in it. Sea water came in and the boat soon went down. Luckily these people had another small boat——a lifeboat, so they all got into the lifeboat. They lived in the boat for many days. They ate and slept, and always hoped. At last people in a ship saved them.
How do people live in a very small lifeboat for a long time? They must be strong in every way. They must have a hope, and they must have a strong desire(愿望)to live. People cannot drink seawater. If they drink a lot of sea water, they will quickly die. They must catch rainwater and drink it. They must also catch fish and birds for food. Lifeboats do not often carry cookers. So people cannot cook their food in the lifeboats. Raw (生的) fish and birds are not very nice but they are their only food. They must eat raw food, or they will die.
