The last one that the good man asks is a road. The road says, “I don’t care if the tiger eats you. People could not get along(相处) too well without me. But all day and all night people step on （踩踏）me without even a ‘thank you’.”

The tiger is ready to eat the good man. Just then a dog comes by. “What is happening?” asks the dog. The man tells the dog the whole story.

“I don’t understand,” says the dog. “The tiger wants to eat you because you put him in a cage?”“No, no,” says the man. “Some other men put him in a cage.”“Oh,” the dog says. “He is going to eat you because you do not have a cage.”

“Silly dog!” the tiger cries. “Don’t you understand? I was in the cage. This man let me out.”

“Oh, I see,” the dog says. “When the man was in the cage, you let him out.”“I was in the cage!” the tiger cries. “In this way!” with that, he jumps back into the cage.

At once, the dog closes the door of the cage. “Oh,” the dog laughs. “At last I understand!”

The good man and the dog walk off. The tiger looks sad in the cage. If he waits long enough, perhaps（也许） another good man will come by.

The little boy looked away and said, “It’s yours, teacher.”

She recalled(回想起) the times when she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, and times when shed said things like “Take my hand Douglas, we’ll go outside” or “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.”

Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand.
